CELEBRANT of the MASS Reverend James C. Hudgins, Pastor

DEACON of the WORD Deacon Dick Cronican

DEACON of the EUCHARIST

Deacon Bob Lyons

THE HOLY THURSDAY WINDOWS OF SAINT JUDE CHURCH

Washing of the Apostles’ Feet: The symbol in this window is a griffin. A griffin was a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle. The griffin became a symbol of Christ who is at once true man (the Lion of the Tribe of Judah) and true God (an eagle is symbol of divinity, associated with the writings of St. John). Thus, God himself has become a humble servant in the person of Jesus, even to the point of washing the feet of his Apostles. Last Supper: The symbol in this window is a chalice encircled with wheat, which represents the Eucharist first celebrated on Holy Thursday night. Notice how St. John leans on the chest of Jesus while Judas Iscariot sits at the end of the table, clutching the bag of money which had such a hold on his heart. Above the Last Supper is the image of a pelican. According to an ancient legend preceding Christianity, in time of famine a mother pelican wounded herself, striking her breast with the beak to feed her young with her own blood. That’s how the pelican became a symbol of Christ who feeds us with his body and blood in the Eucharist. Agony in the Garden: In this window is the familiar image of the paschal lamb. Jesus is the Lamb of God, whose sacrifice, accepted on Holy Thursday night as a “cup of suffering,” takes away the sins of the world.

Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. John 13:5

Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” Luke 22:19, 20

Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” Luke 22:41
