CLASS 3

What a busy half term we’ve had so far in Class 3 – and thingsare just about to get busier as we prepare for all the excitingevents coming up in the run up to Christmas!

Last week, the class learned some basic first aid including howto contact the services we might need in an emergency andhow to bandage arms and legs. Later the same day, we allplanted bulbs on the banks of the field which we look forwardto seeing push up through the grass in the spring. This week,we have a skipping workshop to keep us moving!

On science day, the children were introduced to their currenttopic – ‘What’s the Attraction?’ –which looks at forces includingmagnets. They designed and made some fantastic magneticmaze games whilst exploring the strength of different magnetsand finding out which materials are magnetic. We have enjoyedsharing our current class book, ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hugheswhich has inspired some great writing including news reportswhich the children are working on this week.

CLASS 4

Batteries Included!

Over the last few weeks, we have been buzzing, flashing andwhizzing in our newest topic – Batteries Included.

We started with a STEAM day focusing on creating electricalpictures which involved us investigating circuits and making afirework picture light up.

In English, we were inspired by an old book called ‘TheIncredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm’. Using this, the children have been learning how to create pace in theirwriting using powerful verbs, short sentences and repetition. They then use their skills to write their own adventure based onan invention that went wrong.

RE has been very interesting, as we have been looking at howthe four gospels are very different. We had lots of discussionabout the gospels and compared them with each other. Usingwhat we learnt, we designed our own Christmas card based onJohn’s gospel.

Finally, we really enjoyed looking at our creative homeworkprojects from our previous topic – ‘Were the Dark Ages Dark?’They were all fantastic and both Mrs Roberts and Mrs Holtenjoyed listening and sharing their work. Thank you to all theparents for helping them with these.

CLASS 5

Good news !

Just like Sir Ernest Shackleton’s famous adventure, all of thestudents in Class 5 returned safely following their reenactmentof the trip around the school. They will now use their notes andexperiences to write a biography and diary entry which we alllook forward to reading.

Thank you for supporting this outdoor learning experience.

CLASS 6

Yeovil Magistrate’s Court Year 6 Mock Trial.

This term All Saints were given a wonderful opportunity toparticipate in a local mock trial competition at Perrott HillSchool.

Ten lucky year 6s worked on a script and were part of thedefence team. The case revolved around a 19 year old manbeing accused of fly tipping. The children took on the roles of :Usher, Magistrates, Witnesses, Defence Solicitors, Court Artist,Court Reporter and Witness Service. They had to work hardleading up to the trial to predict all the questions they may beasked and really understand the role that they would be takingon.

The case took place on Thursday 21st November and all thechildren took their responsibilities seriously. They acted verywell and learnt so much about the different roles within a courtcase. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to watch someother cases. They were impeccably behaved and MrsMcKenzie was proud of each and every one of them.

Once the children had returned to school a press conferencewas held and Class 6 became journalists. They then used theirkey notes to write a news report. If you’d like to find out howthe case concluded look out for one of the reports.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

The children have been very busy this month during theirOutdoor Learning time! Over the last few weeks, the childrenhave designed and created Christmas decorations to sell atthe Christmas Fayre. All the decorations have been made withnatural materials sourced from our very own Forest of Friendswith the addition of beads, feathers, coloured wire and more, including eco-friendly glitter, to make their decorations sparkleready for the festive season. The children would like to thankall the volunteers who helped us in school at our workshopsand the people who prepared the wood by slicing and whittling, organised the soaking of the willow and collected thepinecones. Thank you for making our Christmas decorationproject a success!

SCHOOL COUNCIL

This month School Council organised an assembly for thewhole school about Anti-Bullying during Anti-Bullying week.First, they asked their classes questions to find out what theyunderstood bullying to be and what they should do if they werebeing bullied or saw someone being bullied. They found thateach class had a good understanding of what bullying is andknew that if they felt they were being bullied they should referto the 4 step rule which is displayed in their classrooms. Duringthe assembly the School Council told the children about theacronym STOP to help them remember that bullying happensSeveral Times On Purpose and that if this occurs to them thenthey must Start Telling Other People. A member of the SchoolCouncil introduced the school to her idea of having a worry boxon the School Council board which the children could leave anyconcerns that they may have and would like School Councilmembers to help them with.

Well done, School Council. You have been working very hardthis term to help everyone in our school and for School in a Bag!

In celebration of World Science Day for Peace andDevelopment on November 10th, the whole school held aScience / STEAM day.

The day started with a whole school assembly where thechildren were encouraged to think about how science is allaround them. The world does not function without science. They learnt about density through experiments with floatingeggs and oil!

Within each class the children then spent the day exploringan aspect of science linked to their class topic. They followedtheir STEAM process from initial ideas and predictions all theway through to testing, improving and evaluating their process. The school was buzzing with busy children actively learning andenjoying what they were doing.

Reception children spent their time designing and making nestsfor the Owl Babies, whilst other classes were testing paperstrengths, finding the correct material to make an umbrella with, creating an electrical circuit to design a picture, parachutes andthe Year 6 pupils discovered and explored how the humanheart pumps blood around the chambers.

Enjoy exploring your Lego Zip wire. Please send any photos orfilms to [email protected]

1. Put aLEGO minifigure on a base and build up andaround him! Leave a space for the string to slidethrough.

2. Secure the string to a door handle and then securethe other end on something slightly higher.

• What makes the man travel faster down the zip line?

• Is a steep slope better?

• What happens to the LEGO® man when he gets tothe end?

• · Cut the parachute cord shorter. By keeping tensionon the line and raining your arm up and down, youcan control the slope of the zip line.

• · Speed up the lego man by increasing the angle ofthe slope

• · Slow down or stop the lego man by evening out theangle of the slope

• · Return the lego man by decreasing the angle of theslope

• · Gravity works to pull the LEGO man down the zipline but the angle of the slope can slow gravity

• · Tension on the cord is needed to maintain travel
