As we defined and clarified our driving goal for the future – to continually find ways to bring more value to our members – we agreed on the importance of impacting the food safety and animal welfare discussion among media and consumers at every opportunity. To that end, I’m excited to share with you the details of Vision 2014: An Industry Celebration, part of LPC’s long range plan for bold action and focus. I believe Vision 2014, occurring the night before the opening of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters (NAFB) Convention, kicks off LPC’s vision for the future in a powerful way. Vision 2014 begins with a dynamic panel of experts discussing animal welfare issues. For industry professionals and LPC members, this presentation will provide a unique opportunity to glean stories for their publications that I hope will be shared among other media outlets. For consumers, who are exposed to an alarming mix of truth and fiction on the topic, Vision 2014 will provide much-needed illumination and clarification. Our moderator will be Mike Adams, host of AgriTalk, Farm Journal Media’s syndicated radio talk show that helps connect producers with consumers. Three presenters will offer diverse perspectives on the topic of animal welfare: Dr. Hans Coetzee, professor of veterinary clinical pharmacology at Iowa State University, chaired the 4th International Symposium on Beef Cattle Welfare this summer and was one of the original organizers of the event in 2008. Dr. Coetzee has an extensive background in pain relief protocol and therapy in food animals. Debbie Lyons-Blythe, a rancher from the Flint Hills of Kansas, regularly writes about how she cares for the welfare of her cattle in her blog “Kids, Cows and Grass”. She has long advocated for farmers to become integrated into the consumers’ conversation about nutrition, food safety and animal welfare. In 2012, Lyons- Blythe was voted America’s Farmers Mom of the Year. Steve Meyer, president of Paragon Economics, is a consultant to National Pork Board and National Pork Producers Council. He provides economic council regarding meat industry production, price forecasts and the eco- nomic impact of pork production and process- ing. Meyer was one of our speakers at the LPC/AAEA Regional Workshop in Ankeny, IA, this spring. How the livestock industry addresses animal welfare issues and how their perspective may differ from that of the consumer is a message that needs to stay in the forefront. I invite LPC members, consumers, media, and farm broad- casters to join us as we learn and share knowl- edge of this timely and important subject that impacts us all. continued on next page Don Norton Boelte Hall 2014-15 LPC President Long range vision begins with bold action Actiongram Vision 2014: An Industry Celebration November 11, Westin Crown Center in Kansas City No cost to attend the 4:00-5:30 pm panel discussion. Advancing livestock media professionals

During LPC’s recent exploration of its longrange goals, two related issues have come uptime and again in the conversation: food safetyand animal welfare, topics currently undergoingintense scrutiny both in the media and at thedinner table. As we defined and clarified ourdriving goal for the future – to continually findways to bring more value to our members – weagreed on the importance of impacting the foodsafety and animal welfare discussion amongmedia and consumers at every opportunity.

Another important part of LPC’s work is to recognize andhonor those who make a positive impact on our industry.Following our panel discussion, plaques will be unveiled forwinners of this year’s Hall of Fame Award and Headliner Award,J. David Nichols and Wayne Bollum (posthumous). Winners ofthe 2015 Hall of Fame Award and Headliner Award will also beannounced; the deadline to nominate individuals for theseawards is Oct. 13. Nomination forms can be found by clickingthe following links:

Hall of Fame Award Headliner AwardTwo other elements in our long range commitment to provid-

ing value to our members have already been implemented:• The Professional Development Stipend Program provides

a way for LPC members to grow and expand their knowledge inthe livestock industry by helping cover expenses for qualifyingclasses, seminars, workshops or events. This program is in itssecond year and has provided valuable experiences for LPCmembers.

• The internship program, which just completed its first yearwith LPC, provides a grant for an intern to work with a LPCmember for the summer and consists of two parts. First, LPCmembers submit applications for an intern. Once an applicant hasbeen chosen, information about the internship is posted and stu-dents can apply for the position. The member is responsible forhousing the intern for the duration of the internship; LPC pays theintern’s wages. This program is a win-win: it provides workloadassistance for an LPC member and a once-in-a-lifetime opportu-nity for a young person interested in the livestock industry.Applications for both of these programs are available in theActiongram or from the office.

Looking forward to seeing you at Vision 2014 And thankour two premier sponsors!
