Text Tasks:

Making the text work for you.1.Look at how the book overall and how each chapter is organized.2.Find where the MOST information is‐START THERE.3.Make a short‐term GOAL for the text and your reading. Ex: Tell me what a marine laboratory is. 4.Make a long‐term GOAL for the text and your reading. Ex: Tell me how Marine Biology developed.5.Hold the book accountable ‐ can you find the information you are looking for ? Is it clear to you what the text is saying? If you have more questions‐ write those down also!

Vary your Style: Keep changing YOUR approach to the text.

VERY IMPORTANT: A textbook is the life and knowledge of thousands of people. Here written and passed on to you. Take this seriously. We would have very little in our society is everyone in the world has to start from zero knowledge and discover everything on their own..

Styles: STYLE #1 Speed variation: Speed readers don't try to take in and understand each and every word. They don't "read aloud" in their head. Speed readers read in "blocks", thus maximizing the number of words they read in any "fixation". 1.Relax. 2.Focus. 3. Use a ruler or index card to guide your eyes down the page of text, line by line. You may feel self‐conscious, but it works! Alternatively, just run the end of a pen under each line. Move the pen, ruler or card smoothly across/down the page, and force your eyes to keep up. Remember, don't fixate on each and every word.

STYLE #2 Question method: Aptly named‐ for each line read‐ students will ask questions based upon the reading. You can write and answer questions as you go or ask questions about sentences that are difficult, any vocabulary not known, or how the material connects with any previous knowledge. Examples: How long ago did fingerprinting begin being used for identification? This direct type of question can be used as well as Bloom's Revised Taxonomy questions. For Example: Level 3:What questions would you ask in an interview with Marcello Malphigi? Level 5: How would you prove that fingerprinting is a science?

Vary YOUR Style: Learning is an ACTIVE Process. It is also an EXPERIMENT at any age.  The way you think is influenced by what you are doing while you think.

When you have blood flowing and your brain working well as a result, it is easier to retaininformation you read and easier to navigate through a text to find what you want to learn.

STYLE VARIATION #3Classical/instrumental music‐ TRY IT. WHAT TO TRY? Think of your FAVORITE INSPIRATIONAL MOVIE Find the instrumental songs and listen to the soundtrack while you read. This will engage your brain and your memories of being inspired by the story in the movie.

Suggestions: some of these movies are Rated R, I am suggesting listening to the music

NOT watching the movie
