INVESTING IN EARLY EDUCATION: LANCASTER REC AND LOCAL SOCIAL ENTERPRISE PARTNER TO TEACH EARLY STEM TO CHILDRENThe US Department of Education finds that nationally 60% of children are not kindergarten-ready when it comes time to walk into kindergarten on that first day, but Lancaster Recreation Commission is being proactive in making sure that their youngest students are prepared. Lancaster Recreation Commission understands the importance of providing education to parents so that their children are equipped with all the necessary skills to be successful in school. Lancaster Recreation Commission has partnered with STEM Starts Now to provide the program to all of the early child education programs to help teachers and parents teach early science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts to young children.
Together STEM Starts Now and Lancaster Recreation Commission are providing a foundation to give all babies the best start possible by teaching parents how to nurture critical early skills that lay the foundation for a lifetime of new learning. Since 90% of a child’s brain is formed before even starting kindergarten, these are the critical years to provide this foundation.
Lancaster Rec is providing STEM Starts Now subscriptions for free to families in our programs. Parents and care-givers of children age newborn to five who participate in the early childhood education programs at the Lancaster RecreationCommission can subscribe for free by going to STEMStartsNow.com. Parents should instruct their children who walk tothe playground:
• To listen to the leaders and immediately leave the playground if it closes due to inclement weather.
• Where they should go (home, to a neighbor’s home, or with a friend) if the playground closes.
Parents who drop off their children should:• Monitor weather conditions and promptly
return to pick up their children if severe weather is occurring or there is a NWS warning.
• Children will be permitted to call parents to let them know the playground is closing. Parents must instruct their children on who to call to pick them up and children must know the phone number.
