An Alternate Method For Choosing The Right Formula For YourPatients

    By Masaaki Nakano, DOM

A constant question for us in the clinic is when to make adjustmentsand when to stay the course. A patient comes in and says, "Thingsare the same as last week." How do you determine if you need tochange your treatment or continue with what you started theprevious week?

n general, !elieve that acupuncture helps with spontaneous healingand can provide quick relief.

use hinese her!s as well as supplements to support the treatmentand sustain the effects of the acupuncture in order to promote aspeedy and full recovery.

n the #nited $tates, we have an advantage in that we can prescri!eher!s and do acupuncture at the same time, not like in %apan. n mypractice, try to keep a glo!al perspective when looking at !othacupuncture and her!s. The Vital Energy Muscle (VEM& test canreally help us hone in on the right formula that will help push theacupuncture treatment to the ne't level.

()* testing is !eneficial in that it is a way to evaluate which her!sare working and how effectively. f there are stalls or slow results, the()* test can determine with more confidence if the person shouldcontinue with the formula or if we need to adjust. Also, the ()* testcan help us determine which formula and from which company. n mye'perience, some patents work for some people, while for otherpeople the same formula, !ut just a different company is needed.)ven minute adjustments can make all the difference in the worldwhen it comes to progress for a patient.

+hen starting out prescri!ing her!s over - years ago, lackedconfidence to allow tongue and pulse alone to guide me to the correctformula. ver the years, have developed this system whichhopefully will give you another tool in your clinic to !e a!le to arriveat an appropriate her!al formula or supplement for your patients.

    Vital Energy Muscle Testing

(ital )nergy *uscle Testing is !ased on the fact that the human !odyand each su!stance have their own unique electric andelectromagnetic fields. This test detects how a particular su!stance

determine if the su!stance interacts with the !ody in a positive ornegative way.

This method allows us to use the sensitivity of the !ody, which iscapa!le of detecting even a very faint stimulus. +e can check the

change in the tonus of a minor muscle to o!serve how the !odyreacts to that stimulus. This is a very useful method, which allows usto work without the use of diagnostic instruments.

    Concept of Energy

All su!stances in reality are composed of vi!rating quantum fields.)verything in the cosmos is made of clusters of elementary particlesand life takes distinct shape !ased on how these clusters interact.)verything is woven together in one inter/linked whole.

The human !ody is no e'ception 0 it is made of the same elementaryparticles. lusters of these particles take on different vi!rations andcreate distinct energy fields 0 such as the hepatic or the nephricenergy fields. 1ooked at as a whole, the human !ody appears to !eone seamless energy field. (iewed more closely it will show thedistinct energy fields of each organ.

!elieve that life force e'presses in ways that are not always visi!leto the human eye 0 such as electromagnetic waves, a micro/current,a frequency, a wavelength, a rhythm, a ray of light and evenconsciousness. All of these work together to e'press as life force.

+e are alive !ecause the universe gave us resonance power. This ismore than a vi!ration 0 a vi!ration implies a solitary wave.2esonance, on the other hand, suggests two or more thingscommunicating.

$tagnation, deficiency, and disharmony of this energy produce thea!normal conditions in the human !ody 0 in other words, disease.

System of Vital Energy Muscle Testing

This test can detect any a!normality in the human energy field.3y placing slight pressure on certain areas of the !ody, we canstimulate a sensory neuron to send a message across the cere!ralcentrum, where it is judged to !e either a healthy or unhealthyinfluence. 4rom the !rain, this information is transmitted through thecere!ral spine, then along nervous pathways 5in this case, to thearms and hands and fingers& and is e'pressed in the muscularstrength or weakness of the circle made !y the person6s fingers.

There e'ist unique and deep connections !etween the sensory and

motor corte' of the !rain and the hands. This allows the fingers torespond and reflect the judgment !y the cere!ral centrum. +e could

theoretically use any part of the !ody to gather this information, utdue to this deep connection !ith the hands" !e can get a moreaccurate response.

Another reason to use the fingers to carry out this test is !ecause the

finger muscles fatigue much less quickly than other muscle groups, allowing us to perform the test multiple times.

There are several things you can determine from this test, here are afew7

    A Simple Case Study

=ou have done the intake and palpation for a patient and !elieve thatthey are a candidate for a 1iver Qistagnation formula. =ou havemany formulas to choose from, how do you know which?

    3rand A7 4ree and )asy +anderer 5Xiao Yao San&3rand 37 2ela'ed +anderer3rand 7 3upleurum and Tang >uei 4ormula

They are all, theoretically, essentially the same formula. They shouldall work the same. n my e'perience, this is not true. Also if you lookin the guide!ooks, the indications are slightly different7

Bupleurumand Tang Kuei4ormula7 Typical 1iver Qistagnationsymptoms, also includes constipation as key indication.

2ela'ed wanderer7 1iver Qistagnation symptoms !ut also with andloose stool.

4ree and )asy +anderer7 oesn6t specify either loose stool orconstipation.

$ometimes you carry the correct patent for the patient, !ut not allclinicians carry several !rands of the same formula. +hat do you do ifthe patent doesn6t work? o you keep going until it does? The ()*test can help us figure out if it is working, the proper dosage, andwhether or not a different patent of the same name can work !etter.

These three patents have the same name, !ut sometimes they don6twork. The ()* test can also help us figure out how to com!ine, andin what dosage ratio. have tested for two pills of two differentformulas !ut not gotten a clear result from the ()* test in terms ofwhich is more appropriate, !ut !y simply adding a third pill the ()*tests are more clear. Additionally, this can help us figure out how totaper/off of a formula.

$ince incorporating this test into my practice, achieved much

quicker results, and with longer lasting changes. The ()* test is atool. 1earn to use it appropriately, and it can !e very useful in yourclinic.
