1 Important Notes

INFORMATIONThis information complements the "SPIROPLAN® W, R..7, F..7, K..7, S..7 Series GearUnits" operating instructions.

A requirement of fault-free operation and fulfillment of any rights to claim under guar-antee is that you adhere to the information in the operating instructions.

WARNINGDanger of electric shock

Severe or fatal injuries.• De-energize the oil heater before you start working on the unit.• Secure the oil heater against unintended power-up.

CAUTIONImproper assembly may result in damages to the gear unit.

Possible damage to property• Make sure that all the heating elements are fully immersed in the oil bath in order

to avoid any damage.

CAUTIONThe voltage at the heater and the thermostat must not exceed 230 V.

2Theory of operationStructure

2 StructureAn oil heating is required in order to allow for a smooth startup in the event of a cold startat low ambient temperatures. An oil heating is available with an external or an integratedthermostat depending on the gear unit design.

However, a heating is only possible for mounting positions where the thermostat and thescrew-in heater are sufficiently covered with oil. This is why the position of the heaterand the thermostat varies depending on the type and the mounting position of the gearunit. The following table shows the possible combinations:

Depending on the type and size of the gear unit, the heating can be equipped with anexternal or an integrated thermostat:

2.1 Theory of operationThe heater is screwed into the gear unit housing and is controlled via a thermostat. Thetrip temperature of the heater is set depending on the respective lubricant.

The thermostat built in via a special cover has got an adjustable temperature range inwhich the oil can be heated. The temperature range is preset by SEW-EURODRIVE.However, customers may change the preset values manually if required.

In order to prevent the oil from burning, the heating elements of the heater have a max-imum capacity. This is why the heating process for cold gear unit oil can take betweenone and several hours. The exact duration of the heating process before the start variesdepending on the gear unit size, the mounting position, the oil fill quantity.

This is why the thermostat has to be energized permanently even when the drive is in abrief standstill. If the drive is in standstill over a longer period, i.e. holiday, and the ther-mostat is not energized, you have to make sure that the thermostat is energized in duetime before the drive is started up.

Depending on the lubricant, the ATHs-SW-2-JUM thermostat with part number13253972 is preset to one of the two temperature values by SEW-EURODRIVE:

The following figure shows the possible setting range of the thermostat. In this example,the pointer is on 0 °C.

3.2 Integrated thermostatThe C/Th/RE/3/G1½ heater is equipped with an integrated thermostat:

The temperature value is preset by the supplier. Irrespective of the lubricant, the valueis 10 °C.

Proceed as follows to connect the thermostat:

• Connect the thermostat to the terminals [1], [2] and [4] according to the following wir-ing diagram:

• Connect the protective earth conductor to the "PE" terminal.

5 Positioning the thermostatStartup/Operation

5 Startup/OperationThe gear unit heating comes with cable glands and jumpers. The are included in thescope of delivery of the screw-in heaters and are preassembled. The gear unit heatingis connected to the power supply via terminal studs. They do not depend on the size ofthe heater and always have an M4 thread. We recommend using RKS4 ring cable lugswith small grommets.

Notes regarding the function of the oil heating

• The thermostat is preset to the temperature specified in section 3 "Thermostat(page 7)". The thermostat turns off the oil heater at this temperature. Only then, thegear unit may be started up. The thermostat activates the oil heater again once thetemperatures is about 3 K below the limit temperature.

• Thermostat and oil heater are installed and ready for operation. Establish the wiringand the connection to the power supply prior to startup.

• Consult SEW-EURODRIVE if a differing oil viscosity class is used or if ambient tem-peratures fall below the specified limit temperature.

5.1 Positioning the thermostatThe required position of the thermostat may vary depending on the installation space.

Proceed as follows to position the thermostat:

1. Open the clamping screws [2].

2. Turn the thermostat to the required position.

Observe the position of the cable gland. Make sure that there is no potential moistureingress.

3. Tighten the clamping screws [2].

CAUTIONMalfunctions due to changes to the mounting position.

Possible damage to property• Do not change the mounting position without prior consultaion with

SEW-EURODRIVE, otherwise proper functioing can no longer be guaranteed.

A protective sleeve prevents oil from leaking. The sensor of the thermostat is inserted inthe sleeve and attached via the 2 clmping screws.
