Admiral Metals Skill Training Model
Today’s Goal …
• To learn a new model for training employees
• Focused specifically on how to teach skills
• Based on principles of adult learning theory
• Easy to apply and practical
• Something we can all use
• Improve the effectiveness of our training efforts
Definition of Training …
• The achievement of specific Learning Objectives
through Instruction.
• Transfer of:
• Attitude
• Skills
• Knowledge
Definition of Skill …
• The talent or ability to do any given task well and
with proficiency; developed through training and
experience.
How People Learn …
• People learn in different ways:
• Listening - by being told
• Seeing - by being shown
• Experiencing - by doing
• Learners can be prone to learn one way or another
• Also very likely to be a blend of learning styles
Confucius Say …
“I hear and I forget. I
see and I remember. I
do and I understand.”
Confucius 551 - 479 BC
How We Remember …
• We will remember:
• 10% of what we hear
• 50% of what we see
• 90% of what we do
• Taking into account how people learn and how they
remember, the simple model for teaching skills
emerges from very practical common sense.
The Skill Training Model …
Let’s practice Tell, Show and Do
• Key Points for TELL:
• Give an Overview
• Explain the Reasoning
• Set your Expectations for the Learner
• Tell the Learner what they will be learning and also
include the reason why and how the training will
have an impact. Provide motivation and reasoning
to ensure Employee Engagement in the training.
The Skill Training Model …
• Key Points for SHOW:
• Demonstrate the Skill
• Show how it’s done
• Demonstrate your Expectations
• Modeling or Showing the Learner how the skill
should be done is essential to transferring complete
understanding. Tell and Show together provide the
instructional part of the training…but its not enough!
The Skill Training Model …
• Key Points for DO:
• Learners must Practice
• Observe the Practice
• Provide Constructive Feedback
• No matter how simple or straightforward the skill
may seem to you, it’s vitally important to have the
Learner practice and actually do the task with you
Observing to provide help, support and feedback.
The Skill Training Model …
• Key Points for REVIEW:
• Always give Feedback
• Be Patient and Supportive
• Go between Do and Review if necessary
• Review let’s the Learner know if they did the skill
correctly and learned from the training to your
expectations. Make sure the learning took place to
allow transfer of skills to performance on the job.
The Skill Training Model …
• The Review is really COACHING
• What did you do well?
• What did you find easy/comfortable?
• Where do you think you could improve?
• What did you find most challenging/difficult?
• Here’s where I think you did well (Feedback)
• Here’s where I think you need to focus to improve
More About The Review …
The Skill Training Model …
Application of the Model …
• Let’s look at a very simple example of how the Skill
Training Model can be applied to even a very
modest learning objective.
Tell - Show - Do - Review Video
Using the Model …
SO LET’S DO SOME …
A Quick Exercise …
• Think about a simple task or skill that you might
have to provide training for to a fellow employee.
• Use the “Worksheet” that I’ve provided to jot down
a few notes about how you might structure this
training using the new Skill Training Model.
• The Worksheet will guide you through the process
Let’s Review the Exercise …
• How did you get along?
• Are there any parts of Tell, Show, Do, Review that
you’re unsure of or need more help with?
• Can you see how this Skill Training Model can be
adapted to any training situation that you might
encounter with your teams?
• Will you use the Worksheet for real training needs?
Summarizing …
Telling is not Training
Training Requires…
Repetition, Practice, Feedback
Repetition, Practice, Feedback
Repetition, Practice, Feedback
Repetition, Practice, Feedback
Tell, Show, Do, Review
George Bernard Shaw …
“The single biggest
problem in
communication is the
illusion that it’s taken
place.”
Conclusion …
THANK YOU!
