Charity Erhabor studies maths and English to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse!

Reasons to study maths & English

Maths and English qualifications are not only important for everyday but are also essential if you want to study at an advanced level. Charity Erhabor, a maths and English student at Preston’s College, found this out when she started out to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.

“I didn’t meet the entry criteria for university because I didn’t have my maths and English qualifications. After talking with a friend who was studying at Preston’s College I decided to book an assessment and start getting myself ready for university.

My assessment was really helpful, it indicated what my level of ability was whilst also highlighting my strengths and areas for improvement to focus on.

My son [19], suggested that I would be learning alongside younger students, which was not the case. I told him I had a second opportunity to study for these qualifications and I went for it. I’m glad I did because now have my qualifications and career plan mapped out.”

Preston’s College leaps up national achievement tables

The College is ranked an impressive 7th best nationally across its course provision and 9th place nationally for 16-18 year-old education and training. The leading Lancashire College is also positioned 29th nationally for its outstanding adult provision.

The Government’s QARs rank overall achievement rates for education and training nationally and showcase the number of learners that successfully achieve their chosen qualifi cation and programme of study.

Preston’s College, which specialises in technical vocational training, also ranked top in the country with the best achievement rates in a number of Apprenticeship areas, including Engineering, Construction Civil Engineering, Health Pharmacy IT, Software, Web and Telecoms

Professionals and Beauty Therapy.

Lis Smith, principal and chief executive of Preston’s College, said: “Building on the previous year’s impressive results, now becoming the 7th best nationally across our course provision is an outstanding achievement and is testament to the calibre of our entire team in providing education and training that’s amongst the best in the country, as well as the hard work of our students. We also currently anticipate this year’s results will show even further improvement.

“We’re committed to making our learners the most employable that they can be. This means delivering a curriculum that encompasses classroom and workplace-based training and education routes that equip

students with the real skills, knowledge and experience needed to hit the ground running in their chosen career path, whether that is after College or after University.

“Every course at Preston’s College has been designed alongside industry partners and aligns with priority sectors, not just in Lancashire but across the UK, to make sure they refl ect modern day skill needs. We’ve worked hard to challenge the dated perceptions of vocational training and the quality of our teaching and course provision across the broad range of technical areas we offer is refl ected in this year’s results.”

Preston’s College has been recognised as one of the top ten FE providers out of 201 General FE Colleges in the country in the Government’s Quality Achievement Rates (QARs) league tables for 2016/17.

Health & Social Care, Dental & PharmacyHealth and Social Care employs more Lancashire residents than any other sector, accounting for 16 percent of all jobs in the county and providing work to just under 100,000 people. With an ageing population (Lancashire’s over-65 population will rise by 23% in a decade) and growing numbers of younger people with complex needs, demand for health and care services is set to continue rising.

Preston’s College has excellent links with local employers like the NHS and St Catherine’s Hospice and we consistently achieve results well above the national average. So you know that you are in safe hands. You can start your career with a Level 2 course and progress to university level study with our Access to HE: Health and Social Care courses. Access courses are specifically designed to enable adults who are returning to study to successfully progress on to degree level courses and build a career in areas such as a Midwife, Paramedic, Social Worker or other.

Teacher Training

From Apprentice to Teacher- Zac’s journey to a successful and rewarding career

Zac says:

“I gained a huge amount of employability skills and experience throughout my Apprenticeship and in industry employment. I developed confidence in my own abilities when working on site as I work best in a practical environment. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my skills with other employees to help them improve, which made me think that I could become a teacher in the field.

“I was nervous to take my first steps, I wasn’t the most academic at school but I had every confidence in my knowledge, abilities and experience.

“When I enrolled onto the Certificate in Education, any worries I had were resolved straight away, as my tutor provided full support throughout my studies, giving me confidence in myself and my ability to deliver lessons.

“Not only has this course made me a better lecturer, but also a better manager on site. Good teachers make a lasting impact on the lives of their learners. My job is incredibly rewarding, especially witnessing learners develop industry skills to gain employment; knowing I had an impact on their progression is very fulfilling.”

Zac started work in the construction industry as an Apprentice, 10 years later he’s a Co-Director of a family building firm and ready to share his valuable knowledge and experience with the next generation. Studying the Certificate in Education at Preston’s College, Zac is able to develop his skills, making him a better site manager and teacher to Apprentices on site.
