Page 5: Adult Learning and Skills Service · Traineeships will help to tackle this problem, while benefitting your business in the following ways: Employers can design a high quality traineeship

TraineeshipsWhat is a traineeship?A traineeship is a government funded education and training programme with work experience. A traineeship can unlock the potential of young people aged between 16-24 and prepare them for their future careers by helping them become work ready.

What do traineeships include? All aspects of a traineeship are focused on getting the trainee ready for work, this includes occupational studies, English, maths and a high quality work experience placement.

Traineeships can last 7 to 12 weeks and include:✔ Work preparation training

✔ English and maths support (if required)

✔ A work experience placement of 7 to 12 weeks with a local North Yorkshire employer

✔ We can also work with you to add additional content to meet the needs of your business

What are the benefits of a traineeship?Traineeships have been developed in response to research showing that young people often lack the knowledge and skills employers expect in the workplace. Traineeships will help to address this problem, bridging the gap between school and full time employment.

Benefits to employersThe flexibility of traineeships offers our employers the opportunity to help build a pool of high quality future recruits for their sector.

What are the benefits of offering traineeships?Traineeships have been developed in response to research showing that young people frequently lack the knowledge and experience employers expect in the workplace.

Traineeships will help to tackle this problem, while benefitting your business in the following ways:

✔ Employers can design a high quality traineeship in partnership with the Adult Learning and Skills Service – one that suits both the needs of your business and the needs of the trainee.

✔ Traineeships allow you to nurture the next generation helping your business to develop a loyal, talented workforce.

✔ Your current employees will have the opportunity to build their own mentoring and coaching skills supporting the trainee.

✔ Training costs will be met by government funding. There is also a free recruitment site to advertise your traineeship opportunities.

✔ If you decide to offer an apprenticeship to a young person, you could be eligible for an apprenticeship grant for employers of at least £1,200.

What will my business need to provide?Your company will need to commit to providing a high-quality work experience opportunity, which is substantial and meaningful, providing a real workplace experience.

The work experience element should last for at least 100 hours (a maximum of 240 hours for benefit claimants) over a maximum of six months. A traineeship should be long enough to enable the young person to develop new skills and behaviours, which ensure they become work-ready and have the confidence to take the first step in their career to secure an apprenticeship or other employment.

You should offer a structured opportunity matched to the individual’s areas of interest and aspirations, where they engage in purposeful work related learning activities rather than observation.

Traineeships

Page 6: Adult Learning and Skills Service · Traineeships will help to tackle this problem, while benefitting your business in the following ways: Employers can design a high quality traineeship

Are there any financial costs to offering traineeships?Training costs are met by Government funding. Employers are not required to pay the young person taking part in the traineeship but may support trainees with expenses.

What happens at the end of the traineeship? Once an individual has finished their traineeship with your company, you will need to ideally give them an interview for a position within your business, if one is available. If no apprenticeship or job opportunity exists within your business at the end of their traineeship, you will need to provide an exit interview together with meaningful written feedback to help them secure an apprenticeship or employment with another employer.

How do I get started?Contact the Adult Learning and Skills Service (see the get in touch section) or email [email protected]

Traineeships are a stepping stone to the future success for young people, businesses and the wider economy.

Benefits to young peopleTraineeships are an ideal opportunity for young people, aged 16 to 24 who are motivated to get a job but lack the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

Those who have been unsuccessful when applying for an apprenticeship or other job due to a lack of skills and experience are most likely be good candidates for a traineeship.

A traineeship can last up to a maximum of 6 months and will include:

n work preparation training provided by the Adult Learning and Skills service

n English and maths support if required

n a work experience placement with an employer

At the end of their traineeship, each young person will be guaranteed a job interview if a role becomes available, or the company providing the work experience placement will provide an exit interview together with meaningful written feedback to help them secure an apprenticeship or other employment with another employer.

How do I know if I am eligible? An individual is suitable for a traineeship if they:n Are unemployed (or work less than 16 hours per week)

and have little or no work experience

n Are motivated to work

n Are qualified below level 3

An individual is probably not suitable if they:n Are aged 24 plus (unless you are subject to Learning Difficulty

Assessments and are aged 16 or over and under 25)

n Are already in a job

n Are qualified at level 3 or above

Apprenticeships

Page 8: Adult Learning and Skills Service · Traineeships will help to tackle this problem, while benefitting your business in the following ways: Employers can design a high quality traineeship

ApprenticeshipsWhat is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a work-based training programme, designed with organisations, which combines on and off the job learning and development. Apprenticeships are partly funded by the Government and are designed to be used to up skill existing employees and to deliver a pool of enthusiastic candidates with the right skills and attitude into an organisation or sector.

An apprenticeship is designed to develop the employee’s level of competency and confidence within their current role by developing their practical skills and knowledge. As a result, the employee will gain nationally recognised qualifications in the form of a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Certificate or Diploma, and functional skills (English, maths and ICT). In return the employer is able to benefit from improved overall efficiency, productivity and competitiveness within their market sector.

What do apprenticeships include? An apprenticeship typically encompasses the following components (these may vary according to the subject area):

Certificate of DiplomaIn an agreed and relevant subject. This covers the practical skills where the apprentice demonstrates that they have the skills and knowledge to meet the required national standard. If an apprentice does not meet these desired skills, an individual training plan is implemented to develop the relevant skills required.

Technical CertificateThis relates to the knowledge based element of an apprenticeship and is typically assessed by a series of online tests, written assignments or a practical assignment.

Functional SkillsEnglish, maths and ICT.

ERREmployment rights and responsibilities.

Are you eligible for apprenticeship funding?✔ You must not hold a degree or equivalent

✔ You must not be currently studying another state funded qualification

✔ You must have a contract of employment

✔ You must have been an EU resident for the last 3 years

Apprenticeship learning process...1 Enrol as an apprentice

An Engagement Officer will meet with the individual to go through the enrolment process:

n Completion of an application form and learner training needs analysis

n Functional skills assessments

2 InductionOne of our specialist assessors will be allocated and visit the learner to begin the programme of learning:

n A detailed explanation of the programme

n Clarification of available support

3 Methods of learningOur specialist assessors will provide monthly learning activities which will involve:

n Our eLearning portal

n Workplace visits

n Workplace observation

n Individual learning plans

n Portfolio of learning

4 Assessment and feedbackEach qualification has its own assessments and our specialist assessors will fully support the learner throughout this process.

Are you a parent? Make sure you’re in the know…An apprenticeship delivers the opportunity to gain real job training, whilst earning and working towards a national recognised qualification.

What is the main benefit for the apprentice?Apprenticeships are valuable for young people because they provide access to practical learning in real industry settings, utilising the current methods and technologies employed by organisations and industry experts. It is apparent that many of the essential skills needed to succeed in these industries can only be learnt whilst working in these settings- classroom teaching alone is not enough.

Apprenticeships

Page 9: Adult Learning and Skills Service · Traineeships will help to tackle this problem, while benefitting your business in the following ways: Employers can design a high quality traineeship

How is the apprenticeship programme structured?A typical apprenticeship framework encompasses on the job training with theoretical learning. This approach enables an apprentice to learn the theory behind industry methods and is then given the opportunity to apply these theories. In addition, apprentices are given the opportunity to improve their functional skills in line with their industry requirements.

What happens at the end of the programme? At the end of an apprenticeship programme most of our apprentices are offered a position by their employer, as businesses and organisations have invested a considerable amount of time and money in creating an asset to their organisation.

University vs apprenticeships Apprenticeships offer a different route to employment in comparison to a university course. They are a genuine alternative to the university path as many employers are keen to train enthusiast candidates to step into their organisational culture.

52%(Just over half) of parents think that apprenticeships can offer the same opportunities, professional and financial, as traditional routes – like university degrees.

40%of people said their parents had the biggest influence on their education and career. Make sure you are in the know how.

Brian Stancombe“Studying has given me a sense of self-worth and achievement. I’ve made friends and at 63, I just want to keep on going. I was in

the forces and have witnessed the challenges that face ex-servicemen. I wanted to be able to support people living with issues that affect their health and well-being, but having no qualifications in this area I knew I needed to learn more to be taken seriously. I started with a workshop and then a short course in understanding Mental Health and an introduction to Adult Health and Social Care. I enjoyed the sessions and enrolled on a level 2 qualification in Mental Health and I am now completing an introduction to Counselling. I also got the chance to try Italian but it wasn’t for me- at least I had a go!”
