CONTEMPORARY YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE (OR Read What Your Grandkids are Reading)

In this AFLA course, we’ll get a chance to read, review, and discuss some examples of contemporary Young Adult literature. We will be focusing on these texts with three main goals in mind. First, to help you develop an aesthetic appreciation to ENJOY them. Second, to guide you as you further develop your evaluative perspectives to JUDGE them. Third, to give you a chance to see what

today’s students are reading (in and out of school)—to READ what your grandkids are reading! REQUIRED MATERIALS: The Hunger Games by Collins; Everything, Everything by Yoon; Wonder by Palacio; The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Alexie; and Thirteen Reasons Why by Asher

Instructor: Katharine Covino -Poutasse, Assistant Professor of English Studies, teaches writing, literature, and teacher-preparation classes at Fitchburg State University. Having finished her Ed.D. in Language Arts and Literacy at UMass Lowell in 2015, it is now her honor to teach, mentor, and support the next generation of secondary English teachers. Though she teaches at the college level, her research is focused on elementary school students and their teachers. Her specific interests include critical literacy, critical pedagogy, gender, (D)iscourse, and identity. At the heart of all these issues is literacy praxis—the place where theory and classroom practice meet. It is never enough to just read something in a book it is far more important to practice it in a classroom with real, live students! In addition to her work as a teacher and researcher, she is also an advisor, a writer, a poet, an activist, an omnivore, a wife, a mother, and a devoted fan of Game of Thrones. Her three children are in 5th grade, 3rd grade, and Kindergarten.

GIRLS OF ATOMIC CITY: Community Read Book Discussion

This year’s Fitchburg State Community Read, The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win WWII, by Denise Kiernan, is the true story of the young women of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, who unwittingly played a crucial role in one of the most significant moments in US history. At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New

York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Hundreds of young women from small towns across the South—were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept in the dark, few would guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains. That is, until the end of the war—when Oak Ridge’s secret was revealed. Drawing on the voices of the women who lived it—The Girls of Atomic City rescues a forgotten chapter of American history from obscurity. Denise Kiernan captures the spirit of the times through these women: their pluck, their desire to contribute, and their enduring courage. SCHEDULING NOTE: Discussion group will be held on February 13, 20, and 27 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Center for Professional Studies. The last class will be held on March 29 at 7 p.m. in Hammond Hall, Main Lounge where you will attend a talk with, Denise Kiernan, the books author. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Girls of Atomic City by Denise Kiernan.

Instructor: Lisa Moison, Ed. D. is the Director for Professional Studies and Extended Campus Programs at Fitchburg State University. She has a B.S. in English/Secondary Education from Fitchburg State University, a Master’s in English from Mercy College, and a Doctorate in Education from Fielding University.

CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH IMAGE: Ancient, Medieval, and Local

According to UNESCO, cultural heritage is the “legacy of physical artifacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations”. While the type or style of cultural heritage may vary depending upon geography and time period, the form, function, theory, and impact are universal. Students in this course will participate

in a larger project to develop physical and digital photography exhibitions that will parallel the ancient to medieval cultural heritage stories from other countries to the cultural heritage stories of local communities, particularly centered on New England and Fitchburg. Students can choose to participate in a variety of ways: for example, learn about and research ancient to medieval heritage as well as local heritage, contribute exhibition notes and/or photography to the project, do archive work at the Fitchburg Historical Society, share and collect (particularly via the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area) local heritage stories for the digital exhibition, etc. A physical exhibition of this project will be held at the Fitchburg Art Museum in September 2018. For further information, see the digital exhibition site: culturalheritagethroughimage.omeka.net.

THE INFLUENCE OF TEXTILES ON HISTORY

Discover how wool, cotton, silk and linen have influenced world history. They have started wars, spurred exploration and created industries and immigration. Alexander the Great, Mahatma Gandhi, Francis Cabot Lowell, along with others changed the world because of textiles. We wear

them every day, but how much do we really know about them? This course is presented in cooperation with the Fitchburg Art Museum.

Instructor: Joyce Hinckley is a retired psychologist and educator. She is also a life-long student of history, religion, art and culture. She is truly passionate about making connections across disciplines.

DYSTOPIAN LITERATURE

What is the draw of dystopian literature? Why did so many readers flock to George Orwell’s 1984 and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale after the 2016 election? In this course, we will read and discuss four dystopian novels with a modern eye and place it in our own historical context. REQUIRED MATERIALS: 1984 by George Orwell;

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood; Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick; and Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel.

Instructor: DeMisty D. Bellinger-Delfeld teaches creative writing and women studies at Fitchburg State University. As DeMisty D. Bellinger, her writing has appeared in many places, including The Rumpus and Necessary Fiction. Her chapbook, “Rubbing Elbows,” is available from Finishing Line Press. ART IN PARIS: The 1888 Exposition

This is an interactive game that immerses students in the heady world of Paris in 1888, in which art dealers, critics, the Salon, and the avant garde debated changing standards for art and expression. Americans and women like Mary Cassatt tried to gain respect in the world of art, and the Impressionists

tried to maintain their cache. Students in this course assume the role of one of these figures and negotiate, debate, and ultimately try to sell or buy art. Come be a part of this exciting and innovative learning experience! Students will learn about the art world of Paris and the different types of artistic expression that vied for commercial favor at the dawn of the modern era.

Instructor: Katherine Jewell is a political and cultural historian of the United States. Her first book, “Dollars for Dixie: Business and the Transformation of Southern Conservatism in the Twentieth Century,” was published in 2017 by Cambridge University Press. She is currently working on a book about the history of college radio.

TREES BY THEIR BARK

All of our many native trees can be recognized by their bark and late winter is a perfect time to learn identification clues and more about tree bark. Bark is a miracle adaptation of nature, a secure garment for trees that protects them from wind, sun and cold. Bark grows along with the tree as it ages and increases in size, creating unique bark patterns and

textures that are specific to each species: camo bark of sycamore and purple black potato chip bark of black cherry are examples. We’ll learn two dozen different trees in brief indoor sessions followed by short walks around the sanctuary.

ENHANCING YOUR BRIDGE SKILLS: Focus on Playing Defense

At least 50% of the time, bridge players are playing defense. Good defenders see the declarer’s strategy and try to make it fail. Improve your thinking on defense by increasing your counting ability, developing partnership agreements on leads, signaling, knowing the exceptions to bridge maxims such as second man low, third man high and cover

an honor with an honor, and reviewing when to attack defender’s trump suit. Hour lesson. Half hour play, basic bridge knowledge needed.

CITIES ON THE SEA: The Great Transatlantic Liners

The great Atlantic liners have disappeared but their legacy lives on. They were cultural icons, technological innovators, objects of national prestige, and vital to victory in both World Wars. Their story is one of international competition, increasing mechanical prowess and contemporary fashion, developed out of the basic necessity of

crossing the Atlantic Ocean as quickly and safely as possible. In fully illustrated lectures and discussions, we’ll recall the heyday of the great liners from 1890 to the transition to contemporary cruising.

ITALIAN AMERICAN HISTORY: Immigration and Assimilation

This class will examine the economic conditions which impelled mass migration of a third of Italy’s population between 1880-1920 to better understand why Italians chose to emigrate, what they faced as ‘greenhorns’ at Ellis Island, and the variety of the first generations’ experiences through historical narrative, oral history, and film. FILM NOIR FOR A NEW AGE OF ANXIETY

What is film noir, and why does it merit in-depth study? Noir is a mood and an attitude as much as a genre. In the words of writer, film preservationist (and now Turner Classic Movies Host) Eddie Muller, the essence of noir is ‘suffering with style.’ Noir can also be understood as an American artistic

movement, which some scholars have dubbed ‘American Expressionism,’ born of the successive calamities of the Great Depression and World War II and inflected by the hopes and fears of the early Cold War era. This course focuses on film noir and the historical and cultural contexts surrounding these works, but we will also draw parallels between the post-World War II era and our own age of anxiety. We will view and discuss touchstone films made during and after World War II, including most of the following movies, the works of some of the greatest directors of the era: Shadow of a Doubt (dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1943); The Locket (dir. John Brahm, 1946); The Killers (dir. Robert Siodmak, 1946); Criss Cross (dir. Robert Siodmak, 1949); Out of the Past (dir. Jacques Torneur, 1947); His Kind of Woman (dir. John Cromwell & Richard Fleischer, 1951); The Third Man (dir. Carol Reed, 1949); Night and the City (dir. Jules Dassin, 1950); Cry Danger (dir. Robert Parrish, 1951). REQUIRED MATERIALS: Students will need to access DVD’s of assigned films outside of class.

Instructor: Joe Moser is an Associate Professor of English and Film Studies at Fitchburg State University. His research interests include gender and race in film, literary and film genres, world drama, and war literature and film. He has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas.

Continuing association with the Arctic Arts Project, Eric journeyed to Scoresby Sound in East Greenland with another photographic team on the Schooner “Donna Wood” to experience the raw existence of the remote landscapes and Inuit settlements. Eric provided support for aerial perspective with drone video and still photography.

It is with a combination of the art and science that we can begin to understand the important role these play in the stability and health of the region and planet. The intense beauty, immense scale and sense of wonder can be a motivator to think about how involved we will become in our stewardship of peri-Arctic region and planet as globalization and politics also change in accelerating ways.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT PRESENTS: A Search for Justice with Stephen Collins

Actor, Teacher-Lecturer and Tour Guide Stephen Collins will treat us to a one-man show. Mr. Collins’ performances deliver not just the poetry and plays, but they bring poets and playwrights to life on the stage. His shows also convey an

understanding of the impact and the reactions of the characters to their respective times, giving the audience not just a performance, but an experience.

This performance piece will examine issues of social, political and religious justice. What is Justice? Can it be defined, or is it just an abstract concept? What is Truth? How do leaders both political and religious use language to motivate people? Is violent action ever justified when all else fails? Is there such a thing as a just as opposed to unjust war?

In this piece you will hear the words of the Abolitionist Editor William Lloyd Garrison. John Brown will tell you why he resorted to violence. Lincoln will deliver his oration at Gettysburg, the words that remade America. Thomas Hardy and other writers will comment on war and religion in A Search for Justice.
