Modulus of ElasticityAn elastic modulus, or modulus of elasticity, is the mathematical description of an object or substance's tendency to be deformed elastically (i.e., non-permanently) when a force is applied to it. The elastic modulus of an object is defined as the slope of its stress-strain curve in the elastic deformation region:

1. Modulus of elasticity

1. Due to the modulus of elasticity of steel being three times higher than that of aluminium its static capacity is considerably higher.

2. For identical profile cross sections the deflection of steel is three times lower than the deflection of aluminium.

3. For identical load and identical deflection smaller steel profiles can be used.

4. Larger spans can be achieved with steel profiles by using the same cross sections.

Steel has a lowerthermal extension than aluminium!

Steel, glass, concrete have almost the same coefficient of extension, therefore no extension profiles are required when using steel.

2. Modulus of extensionThe coefficient of extension of steel is half as big as that of aluminium.

Therefore, no additional measures are required to create space for material extension within the system.

Steel, glass and concrete in combination have roughly the same extension.

Due to the modulus of extension of aluminium being twice as high than that of steel, aluminium systems have to be thoroughly equipped with dilatation profiles.

Advantage steel:

- no cracking noise caused by extension- continuous water guiding level – therefore prevention of damages- easier to assemble- less material required- no negative effect on optic appearance as expansion joints are not necessary.

3. Modulus of conductivity

The modulus of conductivity of steel is four times less than that of aluminium.

For this reason, the thermal insulation of the profiles of a steel facade is much better than that of an aluminium facade.

Modulus of conductivity

RP steel facade systems = 1,4 W/m²KStandard aluminium facade = 1,8 – 2,1 W/m²K

Advantage steel:

- energy saving- no condensation- lower heat radiation

6. Fire resistance

Fire resistance of steel is considerably higher than that of aluminium.

melting point steel = 1.500°Cmelting point aluminium = 660°C

7. Ecology

Substantially lower energy consumption during production of steel as compared to that of aluminium.

No toxic product waste with steel production.
