How desirable is eter- nity when we consider these miserable and fleeting changes! Let the time pass by as we, little by little, run with it to be transformed into the glory of the children of God.” It’s an appropriate reflection for this first Sun- day of Advent, when the Church begins her new litur- gical year. It also points to one of the great realities of our life on earth: things coming to be and things pass- ing away. Change - sometimes sudden and shocking change - is part of all our lives. How we cope with change is one of the things that indicate how mature we are, how well adjusted to the challenges of life. To paraphrase one poet, we have to learn when to care and when not to care, to let things go. St. Augustine said that every change is a sort of death. So we need to learn how to deal with being in a semi-permanent sort of mourning, without losing our gift of enjoying the good things in life. Some changes can be traumatic and unexpected: the death of a loved one, natural disasters like tsuna- mis and earthquakes, the sudden onset of sickness or disability. In moments like these, it can feel as if our whole world is collapsing around us. Our prayers this week will focus on restoring hope in our world. There are many who are feeling hopeless and are in need of our prayer. During this week of advent, pray for the hope of Christ to penetrate our hearts. KID’s CORNER Advent Reflection

In 1622 St. Francis de Sales wrote, on the eve of the

new year, “So this year has disappeared into the abyss

where all the others have gone. How desirable is eter-

nity when we consider these miserable and fleeting

changes! Let the time pass by as we, little by little, run

with it to be transformed into the glory of the children

of God.” It’s an appropriate reflection for this first Sun-

day of Advent, when the Church begins her new litur-

gical year. It also points to one of the great realities of

our life on earth: things coming to be and things pass-

ing away.

Change - sometimes sudden and shocking change - is

part of all our lives. How we cope with change is one

of the things that indicate how mature we are, how

well adjusted to the challenges of life. To paraphrase

one poet, we have to learn when to care and when not

to care, to let things go. St. Augustine said that every

change is a sort of death. So we need to learn how to

deal with being in a semi-permanent sort of mourning,

without losing our gift of enjoying the good things in

life. Some changes can be traumatic and unexpected:

the death of a loved one, natural disasters like tsuna-

mis and earthquakes, the sudden onset of sickness or

disability. In moments like these, it can feel as if our

whole world is collapsing around us.

Our prayers this week will focus on restoring

hope in our world. There are many who are

feeling hopeless and are in need of our prayer.

During this week of advent, pray for the hope of

Christ to penetrate our hearts.

FIRST READING

A reading from the prophet Jeremiah.

See, the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – when I am going to fulfil the promise I made to the House of Israel and the House of Judah: ’In those days and at that time, I will make a virtuous Branch grow for David, who shall practise honesty and integrity in the land. In those days Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell in confi-dence. And this is the name the city will be called: The Lord-our-integrity.’

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be God

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians. May the Lord be generous in increas-ing your love and make you love one another and the whole human race as much as we love you. And may he so confirm your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless in the sight of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus Christ comes with all his saints. Finally, brothers, we urge you and ap-peal to you in the Lord Jesus to make more and more progress in the kind of life that you are meant to live: the life that God wants, as you learnt from us, and as you are already living it. You have not forgotten the instructions we gave you on the authority of the Lord Jesus.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be God

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father

Almighty, creator of Heaven and

earth; and in Jesus Christ, his

only Son our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered

under Pontius Pilate, was

crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell; on the

third day he rose again from the

dead; he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of

God, the Father almighty; from

there he will come to judge the

living and the dead. I believe in

the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic

Church, the communion of

Saints the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body and

life everlasting. AMEN. Alleluia, alleluia! Lord, show us your mercy and love, and grant us your salvation. Alleluia!

R: To you, O Lord, I lift my soul. 1. Lord, make me know your ways. Lord, teach me your paths. Make we walk in your truth, and teach me: for you are God my saviour. R: 2. The Lord is good and upright. He shows the path to those who stray, he guides the humble in the right path; he teaches his way to the poor. R: 3. His ways are faithfulness and love for those who keep his covenant and will. The Lord’s friendship is for those who revere him; to them he reveals his covenant. R:

SECOND READING

GOSPEL

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke. Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewil-dered by the clamour of the ocean and its waves; men dying of fear as they await what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shak-en. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your libera-tion is near at hand. ‘Watch your-selves, or your hearts will be coars-ened with debauchery and drunken-ness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.’ The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
