Gift Giving Weekend St. Columbkille, along with other local churches
and organizations, will again be working with
Heartland Family Services to help meet the needs
of families with donations of toys and clothing.
Last year, the center was able to help 239 families.
The weekend of November 18-19, the “Giving
Tree” will be decorated and located in the com-
mons of the church. The ornaments will identity
NEW toys, clothing or gift certificates. There will
also be ornaments identifying food and personal
items that will be taken to the Tri-City Food Pantry.
Please take as many ornaments as you wish and
bring the items back to the church on Gift Giving
Weekend, December 2 and 3 at all masses.
For questions, please contact Becky or Pat Grant at
402.592.1103.
December 8: Solemnity of
the Immaculate Conception
The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is
celebrated on December 8 each year. This solem-
nity is often confused with the Virgin Birth of
Jesus. However, we celebrate the conception of
Mary, not of her son Jesus. The church teaches
us that the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived
under normal biological means in the womb of
her mother, Saint Anne, but that God acted upon
her soul, keeping it immaculate. Mary was sinless
and conceived with an immaculate soul.

I love big celebrations with family and friends. It
could be a wedding, family or school reunion, birth-
day, anniversary, graduation, holiday or any other
special occasion. I know of no better feeling than
being surrounded by people I love and care for. We
often enjoy great food, laugh, share wonderful stories
that might be as old as great grandpa & grandma.
Sometimes we may even cry as we remember people
who have gone home to be with God and are now
missed.
We have the opportunity and you are invited to a
variety of great celebrations every week at St.
Columbkille parish. At our parish, we gather for these
reunions, coming together to laugh, recall the past,
look forward to the future and enjoy each other’s
company. We often even help each other as we all
occasionally face difficult times.
Cardinal Tim Dolan, Archbishop of New York, once
explained that the joyful and delightful weekly reun-
ions at our parishes are not always the experience
that all Catholics have. Perhaps all parishes are not as
welcoming as ours is. Cardinal Dolan states that par-
ishes are, “the Community and place where we cele-
brate that greatest of all feasts, the holy sacrifice of
the Mass and where we turn for comfort and grace
through all of life’s challenges. In this vision, the par-
ish is truly our spiritual family, not just a group of
near-strangers we briefly encounter once a week.”
I would like to encourage you to share this Advent
and Christmas newsletter/schedule with your family,
friends and neighbors. Invite these folks to “Come
Home for Christmas”. I pray that those who may
have been away from the Church for a while will find
our parish to be a loving family that’s missed them.
When people come back to our parish and feel loved,
welcomed and part of our parish family I trust they
will decide to come back each week. Pax,
Fr. Dave
