“Each and every one of us comes into the world as a child of God, brimming with unlimited potential to fulfill a unique purpose in this world. A faith-filled education helps us unlock

President’s Address to GraduatesToday is a day of endings and beginnings, all cause for celebration. As you mark your graduation from AdventHealth University, you deserve to celebrate three important milestones.

1. The successful completion of your studies. You are here today, in cap and gown, because you made the decision to advance your education, to acquire valuable skills, to work hard, to persevere. You are graduates. You are skilled health care professionals who live the healing values of Christ.

2. The transition from student to member of the AHU alumni community. With more than 7,000 AHU graduates working in health care, you are now part of an elite team of professionals working to extend the healing ministry of Christ. As you move forward, you carry the spirit and values of AHU with you. Stay connected to us, and to each other. The AHU community does not end at graduation; it transitions… and your alumni relationships will be valuable for the remainder of your career.

3. The beginning of your career as a healer, one of the highest callings on earth. You carry with you a legacy of excellence and leadership from AHU, a high bar for both competence and compassion. From this day forward, you will be in a position to contribute to the care and healing of your fellow humans…the greatest cause for celebration I can imagine.

I pray that God will bless each and every one of you with His healing grace: your hands, your heads, and your hearts. May you do both great and good things in His name.

Distinguished Service Award RecipientDr. Donald E Williams

As one of the founding leaders of Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences, now AdventHealth University, Dr. Donald E. Williams has secured his place in the legacy of AHU. Dr. Williams’ 27 years of distinguished academic service at AHU can be measured in several ways. Along with the development of a forward-thinking administrative leadership team, his tenure is marked by enormous growth in enrollment, the addition of several academic and online degree

programs, the establishment of a Denver campus, and innovative work advancing healthcare as ministry. With his leadership, the institution successfully completed several institutional and program accreditation cycles and matured from an associate degree-granting college to a graduate degree-granting university. Dr. Williams always led by example, actively contributing professionally, publishing and presenting academic papers, and authoring a book. As a mentor, he provided tools supporting the professional growth of faculty members through challenging seasons of transition and change. Most notable in his tenure is his reputation as a kind, thoughtful, Christian leader. Possessed with a calm demeanor, Dr. Williams is a brilliant thinker, a true friend, and most of all a man of firm moral integrity and Christianity. His wisdom and patience are characteristics admired by all, and his leadership has been one of unshakeable integrity and steady dependability. He is widely admired by his colleagues for his gifts of knowledge and dry wit, including his mastery of the well-placed pun.

Dr. Williams holds a B.A. in Psychology and a Master of Divinity from Andrews University, and a Ph.D. in Professional Counseling from Purdue University. He and his wife Merrie Lyn spent the first year of their marriage as student missionaries in New Guinea. Following his graduation from seminary, he and Merrie Lyn with their two children pastored for seven years in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. They spent the next eight years in Singapore where Don was campus chaplain and Bible teacher at Far Eastern Academy. Following his work at Purdue, in 1992 Don joined the fledgling Florida Hospital College, now AHU, as Chair of the Department of Pre-Professional Studies.

Working alongside Founding President David Greenlaw and Academic Dean Robert Williams, Dr. Williams assembled the first team of faculty and staff for the college. With the new school successfully launched, he continued to serve as leader of the growing faculty after joining Florida Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education faculty in 1994. He returned to Florida Hospital College in 1997 to again chair the Pre-Professional department. In 2001, Dr. Williams was named Senior Vice-president of Academic Administration and Academic Dean. After leading academic affairs through 14 years of noteworthy growth and distinction, he was named Assistant to the President for Mission in 2015. In this role, he continued to mentor faculty and staff, always generously sharing his wisdom while advancing the healthcare-as-ministry mission of AHU. After 27 years of service to AdventHealth University, Dr. Williams leaves a heritage of leadership, wisdom, and collegiality too great to capture in words, yet too meaningful to ever be forgotten. AdventHealth University formally honors Dr. Donald E. Williams for his many years of wise leadership, generous mentorship, and an immeasurable legacy of distinguished service by awarding him the AdventHealth University 2019 Distinguished Service Award.

Academic Regalia & MaceThe AdventHealth University Mace and the wide variety of academic regalia seen in the current academic procession date back to the formation of the earliest educational institutions of higher education. The mace was originally a powerful weapon of war, used in battle by medieval knights and heavy enough to break the enemy’s armor. Later, in virtually the same form, the mace was widely used to protect royalty; and eventually maces, bejeweled and highly decorated, were used in ceremonial functions as symbols of authority. The Mace, carried today by the Grand Marshal, is a symbol of the authority of AdventHealth University and is displayed only at official University convocations. Echoing both its early use as a weapon and its later use symbolizing authority, the University’s Mace represents education’s authority to break through ignorance and prejudice.

The main staff of the University Mace is of walnut, among the hardest and most attractive of woods, showing both the rigor and the beauty of the education offered at AdventHealth University. The four sided bronze platform at the top of the staff represents the four key concepts of the University’s programs: Nurture, Excellence, Spirituality, and Stewardship. On this bronze platform is mounted a representation of the University’s seal with the institution’s full name encircling four flames of fire representing truth triumphing over ignorance and prejudice while igniting the fires of life-long learning.

It is also instructive to note the symbolic meaning expressed in the various parts of the academic regalia. European universities still show a wide diversity of official academic apparel. However, approximately a century ago, American colleges and universities adopted a consistent academic costume code widely used today in the United States.

The various types of academic gowns represent the different degrees that have been conferred. The gowns for the Associate and Bachelor degrees have pointed sleeves. The gown for the Master’s degree has oblong sleeves which open at the wrist. The gown for Doctoral degrees has bell-shaped sleeves which close at the wrist. On the back of the gowns are hoods that are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Since members of the faculty hold degrees from numerous universities and colleges, space does not permit an identification of each hood in the academic procession. The colors of the velvet trim on the hoods of each gown represent the discipline in which the degree was conferred, and those disciplines can be identified as follows:

The Presidential MedallionThe historic traditions of the commencement ceremony are also reflected in the medallions worn by some of its participants. Chief among these is the Presidential Medallion worn by the University President as a symbol of that high office. The medallion features a replica of the University seal, the name of the University encircling four flames of fire representing truth triumphing over ignorance and prejudice while igniting the fires of life-long learning.

The medallion is suspended from a collar featuring the core values of the University (Nurture, Excellence, Spirituality, and Stewardship) interspersed with discs featuring the lamp of learning and the University seal. The Presidential Medallion has a plate immediately above it engraved with the word, President. Medallions and collars are worn over the academic gown and only at official convocations such as this commencement.
