OUR TEAM: Macdonald & Lawrence (M&L) is a specialist carpentry and rigging contractor based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The M&L Adventure team works both locally and internationally to design, build and maintain awe-inspiring infrastructure for adventure tourism operators. M&L is partnered with ISL Engineering and Land Services, a Structural Engineering firm that specializes in finding safe and efficient structural solutions to the challenges presented by innovative adventure park work. Our goal is to find the special solution that is exactly right for each client’s unique geography, user demographic and price-point. M&L specializes in working collaboratively with professional clients (architects, engineers and tourism operators) in order to deliver logistically-challenging projects within agreed timetables and budgets. No single person or firm can provide all of the answers all of the time: M&L understands this, and knows that its best work is achieved through the cooperation and support of a larger, multi-disciplined team. Our teams have delivered projects in some of the most complex environments to be found anywhere on the planet. From equatorial jungles to uninhabited islands, and from tree-tops to mountain tops, our people have worked on six continents including Antarctica. Whether it is a time-critical project for a television production company, or a budget-driven challenge for a non-profit organization, we thrive on tough logistical challenges. Many people assume that these sorts of projects have unlimited budgets and flexible timelines, but nothing could be further from the truth. We pride ourselves on delivering our work on time and on budget. There’s really no mystery to how we achieve this: just good old-fashioned planning and plenty of hard work!

D e s i g nAs a design/build firm, M&L operates a fully equipped, in-house design and engineering team who specialize in the creation of complex timber, steel and cable-suspended structures. M&L excels at bringing seemingly impossible structures to life through innovative collaboration between clients, designers, craftsmen and engineers.

STEP 1:SITE ANALYSISGathering accurate site data early in the design phase is key to any successful design/build project. M&L Adventure’s in-house surveyors create detailed models of the landscape to both inform the design of the structures, and to eliminate costly errors associated with working on unknown sites. M&L uses kite and drone aerial photography (shown below) to document the site’s topography, vegetation cover, and relationship to adjacent buildings and natural landforms.

STEP 2:CONCEPTUAL DESIGNDesign can begin with as little as a quick hand-sketch, often with just enough information to convey the general idea. Concepts are developed through the use of 3D models to test their viability prior to detailing.

STEP 3:DETAILED DESIGNNext, the design team works collaboratively to develop the idea. Numerous iterations of the concept may be worked through before the final design is reached. Once completed, a set of fully engineered con-struction drawings are created.

RENDERING, SIMULATION & DIAGRAMMINGThroughout the design process photo-realistic renderings, animated simulations, and schematic diagrams are created to ensure that the finished product is aligned with the client’s original vision. In addition to being valuable design tools, these graphics can also help the client team with fundraising, planning and permitting.

B u i l dIn addition to providing complete survey, design and engineering services, the M&L Adventure team has the capacity to execute every aspect of the work no matter how complex. This enables us to create fully-engineered designs that are realistic, cost-effective and based on practical experience. We stand behind our designs with fixed-fee proposals to deliver the project scope, and our work always meets or exceeds the Association for Challenge Course (ACCT) Standards, of which we are Institutional Members.

Good work planning and good communication is fundamental to safe and effective project implementation. The people at M&L know this is the key to success.

I n s p e c t i o n & M a i n t e n a n c eWe create comprehensive Operating and Maintenance Manuals (O&M) for all of our projects. These include a complete set of record drawings, details and checklists for the ongoing inspection and maintenance of everything we build. Additionally, our Team Leaders provide hands-on training to owners and operators to ensure that they are completely comfortable with every aspect of the products that they will operate. Rigorous handover procedures and rock-solid quality controls ensure that our products are built and maintained to the highest international standards. We back this up with comprehensive inspection and maintenance services to ensure our products are safe and effective during year after year of performance.

INSPECTIONS & REPAIRS

M&L Adventure’s ACCT accredited rope access & rigging team are fully qualified to inspect and repair adventure courses, including those built by other firms.

TRAINING & SUPPORT

Our Team Leaders will personally ensure that owners, operators, and staff are fully trained and comfortable with their new adventure products before hand-over. M&L Adventure can also provide additional training to operators on an as-needed basis.

TESTING & CALIBRATION

As leaders in the field of adventure park design and construction, M&L Adventure offers testing and calibration to existing ziplines, bridges, and aerial courses. Unlike other builders, M&L insists on performing tension tests on every life-supporting anchor prior to hand-over. Our team of designers and engineers will work with you to guarantee that your products are safe and code compliant.

R I C H M O N D , B . C .M&L lead the design and construction of this innovative playground in 2013. The park features six unique structures including a striking tower-slide; a tandem zipline; and a driftwood inspired ‘log-jam’. M&L carefully selected a palette of local materials (such as decay resistant yellow cedar logs) to create structures that are both durable and sustainable.

W h i s t l e r , B CIn 2013 the M&L team beat its own previous record when it created

the four newest and longest ziplines in Canada. Spanning more

than 1.3 km’s in length, the Superfly is one of the most

exhilarating mountain experiences in the world, and an incredibly ambitious feat of engineering.

C L O U D W A L K

H o k k a i d o , J a p a nBuilt atop Mt. Tomamu, this

viewing structure affords guests a view of a local phenomenon known as ‘Unkai’ - the sea of

clouds. The structure uses ‘off the shelf components’ in

unconventional ways to create a dramatic experience for users on

this steep mountain terrain.
