SIPROTEC 7SS52:safe, reliable
and fast
Whether single or multiple busbars SIP RO TEC 7SS52
can be relied on for zone-selective protection, irrespective
of your substation configuration. By virtue of its ex-
tremely short operation time of less than 15 ms,
SIPROTEC 7SS52 busbar protection is faster than any
other system.
For this reason, SIP RO TEC 7SS52 is particularly suitable
in situations involving high fault levels where power
system stability is endangered or where bus zone-selective fault clearance is mandatory.
The advantages of the distributed solution
W hilst with centralized solutions for busbar protection,
the cable length between current transformer and
protection input is a determining factor for the burden
of the current transformer, with the distributed solution
the line length is reduced significantly, for example from
300 m down to 3 m. The shorter distances from the
current transformer result in a significantly lower burden
and thus better stability of the busbar differentialprotection. This is an advantage of special significance
in the light of constantly increasing fault capacity. Time
and money are saved during installation and cabling:
depending on substation configuration, up to 60 copper
cable strands per bay can be replaced by a single optical-
fiber pair. A t the same tim e, ease of traceability is
improved and the expense of commissioning significantly
reduced.
Circuit-breaker failureprotection
Irrespective of whether feeder
protection tripping is single or
three-pole, the built-in breaker
failure protection monitors the
circuit-breaker after tripping.
This function is embedded in
the range of functions of the
SIPR O TEC 7SS52.
Interference immu-
nity: clear separation
of the process level
from the electronics.
SelectiveIt is critically important for the
stability of the power system
for an entire region that,
in the case of a busbar fault,
strictly the faulty section is
cleared.
Safe
By linking three tripping
criteria, the measurement
algorithms incorporated can be
relied upon.
Reliable
All internal and external circuits
are continuously monitored for
availability.
Fast
Short fault clearance times are man-
datory for power system stability.
Here, with a release time of less
than 15 ms at the contact of
the tripping relay, the 7SS52
sets new standards within just
3 milliseconds from fault in-
ception, to distinguish between
internal and external faults. T he
circuit-breaker coils are triggered
directly by the tripping contacts.

Fastest communicationmeans of all: optical fiber
Fiber-optics are the most
efficient communication
media available today. We
have integrated them in
SIPRO TEC 7SS52. The entire
exchange of information
between master unit and bay
units takes place via optical
fibers.

Ease of extension
If the substation is to be ex-
tended additional bay units
can also be connected sub-
sequently by the user himself.
Extension of the master unit
is just as simple: plug additio-
nal communication modules
in, adapt the configuration
with the operating program
provided and youre ready
to go!
Applicable onany busbar configuration
W hether it is intended for
single, duplicate or triplicate
busbars, with or without trans-
fer and with up to 48 bays,
4 ties, 24 sectionalizers and
12 busbar sections (i.e. for
whatever busbar configura-
tion), SIPR O TEC 7SS52 is of
modular construction, thus
permitting optimum matching
to the substation configura-tion involved.
A nd by virtue of the distri-
buted arrangement, the ex-
pense of multi-core cabling
between bay and substation
is significantly reduced.

The proven measurement
method ensures maximum
stability, even under high fault
currents and current trans-
former saturation.
Selective detection of busbar
fault takes place on two
separate processor modules.
R eliability is increased still
further by incorporation of a
Check Zone . The decision
of all three processors is
necessary for tripping of a
busbar section.
A ssignment of the feeder
currents to the corresponding
busbar system is controlled
contactlessly by software
through the isolator mimic.
Setting and handling simplicity of use
With the aid of the integrated
operator panel of the master
unit or of a PC, entry of all
setting parameters is opera-
tor-controlled.
For convenience and ease of
setting, fault recording, fault
evaluation and commission-
ing, we additionally provide
an operator routine. Settings
at the bay units themselves
are not necessary. A ll settings
of the busbar or circuit-brea-
ker failure protection are ef-
fected solely at the master
unit. This makes operation
very much easier for you.
The keyboard and display orthe front-panel interface of
the bay units are used for
commissioning, display of
process values, diagnostics
and setting of special func-
tions (for example back-up
protection).
High-speed operationin every situation
The extremely short operation
times within a power system
cycle can be reliably main-
tained, even with the most
extensive substations.
Via ports to the PC:master and bay unit
The master unit incorporates
a serial port for operation viaPC. For diagnostic purposes,
a PC can be connected via
the front-panel port.
Interrogation local and remote
The master unit incorporates
an illuminated LC D display
and membrane keyboard for
local operation. U p to 32 LED s
and 34 alarm relays clearly
display the status of the sys-
tem at all times.
Available in two versions
There is a choice of two
housing variants: the flush-
mounting and the surface-
mounting version in the
standard 7XP20 housing. The
same applies to the master
unit: it is available as 19"
SIPA C m ounting rack for
cubicle mounting and in the
version for surface-mounting.
Both the master unit and the
bay units incorporate their
own power supply, the bayunits possessing a wide-
range power supply unit.
Measured value processing fully numerical
From sampling and digitiza-
tion of the measured values
to the decision to trip the
circuit-breakers the 7SS52
possesses a complete
numerical m easured-value
processing system.
