Need help with Math? TAMU is introducing MLC – Math Learning Center
Math Learning Center
Q. I’ve Never Heard of the Math Learning Center—Is It New?
A. Yes, the MLC is a brand-new unit housed within Undergraduate Studies. We opened our doors the first day of the spring semester and our help services will be available starting Tuesday, January 21, 2020 in various locations on campus.
Dr. Paulo Lima-Filho, who comes to us from the Math Department, will serve as the Math Learning Center’s
Executive Director. His team is comprised of a combination of full-time staff, faculty, and undergraduate peer
tutors.
Q. Is There a Website?
A. Yes, mlc.tamu.edu has just launched and we encourage everyone to visit the website to learn more about
how we’re helping to address the needs of the campus community. The initial launch includes information
about our operating hours for help sessions, review sessions, workshops, math prep courses, and more.
*We are developing resources specifically for advisors and faculty and will add those after the semester starts.
Q. Where Is the MLC Located?
A. The administrative offices of the MLC are temporarily housed in the Teague Research Center in offices 320
and 322; however, we will serve the student population primarily in three locations on campus including the
Adams Band Hall (ADAM), Zachry Engineering Education Complex (ZEEC), and Blocker Building (BLOC).
Q. What Services Does the MLC Offer?
A. The MLC offers a variety of ways to help students improve their math skills. All of our on-campus services
are available to undergraduate students at no extra cost. Our services for students include:
• Help Sessions: drop-in tutoring service taught by undergraduate peer tutors offered at three locations on campus.
• MLC Week-In-Review: review sessions taught by faculty that revisit material covered in the corresponding course during the prior week.
• Hands-On, Grades Up: course-specific, interactive learning sessions led by undergraduate peer tutors, with material developed by faculty. (Registration required; limited availability)
• Reboot Workshops: workshops cover topics that are prerequisites for various courses. (Registration required; limited availability)
Q. What Classes Can My Students Get Help With?
• Help Sessions offer support for MATH 140, 141, 142, 147, 148, 150, 151, 152, 167, 251, and STAT 201.
• Review Sessions are offered for MATH 141, 142, 152, 308, and STAT 201.
