WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION?
Environmental education (EE)increases public awareness andknowledge of environmental issuesand challenges. Through EE, peoplegain an understanding of how theirindividual actions affect theenvironment, acquire skills that theycan use to weigh various sides ofissues, and become betterequipped to make informeddecisions. EE also gives people adeeper understanding of theenvironment, inspiring them to takepersonal responsibility for itspreservation and restoration.
The Neal Moeller EnvironmentalEducation Center at Yellow SmokePark is a Nature Center set on a 359-acre recreation area.
Our mission is to unite people withnature and nurture appreciation andstewardship of the environment.
The “Nature Center” was built in1992 and exhibits various displaysportraying environmental issues.Each year the Nature Center bringsmore than 12,000 children, teachers,and adults together with naturethrough hands-on field classes.
Participants in our educationalprograms, run both for the schoolsand for the community, observe andlearn about plants and animals up-close, discovering the pleasure ofbeing in nature and realizing theirown connection to the environment.
Volunteers are critical to thesuccess of all that we do here at theNature Center.
Volunteer opportunities for peopleof all ages abound, with activitiesranging from staffing the NatureCenter to gardening, to fund-raisingor feeding our captive animals.
Approximately 100 volunteersdonate thousands of hours in supportof our mission each year.
Come out and celebrate theseasons with us.
We have a regular calendar ofevents scheduled throughout theyear. These range from a summernature camps, family friendlyactivities to special events andfundraisers.

Once again, the Nature Centerwill hold its annual summer NatureExplorer Camps for kids preschoolthrough 5th grade!
The camps will take place at theNeal Moeller EnvironmentalEducation Center at Yellow SmokePark. The camps are designed tohelp kids experience nature upclose! The children will be able tolearn about nature through hikes,games, crafts, stories and otherhands-on activities!
Fee includes t-shirt, crafts & snacks.Children must bring a sack lunch!Get signed up early! Registration ison a first-come-first-served basis andwe have a waiting list every year!Pre-registration is required! (There arescholarships available 1 per family).
