StatisticsSexual Harassment in Education

An American Association of University (AAUW) study in 2006 reported that

• 62% of female college students and 61% of male college students reported having been sexually harassed at their university.

• 66% of college students know someone personally who was harassed.

• 80% reported harassment being peer-to-peer.

• 51% of male college students admitted to sexually harassing someone in college, with 22% admitting to harassing someone often or occasionally.

• 31% of female college students admitted to harassing someone in college.

Since most sexual harassment situations go unreported, it is important tonote that statistics do not give a complete picture of the problem. Only 10% or less of student sexual harassment victims attempt to report their experiences to a university employee.

• How would your mother, sister, daughter or son feel if they heard or witnessed you sexually harassing another person?

• How would you feel repeating one of your comments in front of your boss or at trial in front of a judge or jury?
