hearing the best of our people’s liturgy and musical tradition.
What makes Alberto a visionary is his love and respect for his art. He brought his best efforts to everything that he did in the past and everything he does in the present and we are the better for it. Ever open to new music, Alberto was always up for experimentation, whether it was Anshe Emet Live, a Broadway concert, or a jazz concert. He sees himself as an emissary of Jewish music and his knowledge of the Sephardic and Ashkenzic traditions along with his knowledge of Yiddish and Ladino allowed him to represent the widest spectrum of the Jewish musical experience.
There are the intangibles as well. First and foremost, the joy that Alberto brings to everything that he does is so appreciated. His quick smile and modesty are capped by a deep mentchlichtkeit. We are fortunate that Hazzan Mizrahi will continue to join us on the bimah at special times during the year.
There is a beautiful teaching about King David. Some Psalms begin Mizmor L’David, as if to say that the Psalm or the inspiration came to David as his harp would start to play. Other Psalms are written L’David Mizmor, as David brought his inspiration to the Psalm.
All of us at Anshe Emet know that the words of this interpretation have been a learned experience for us. In each case, our community has heard one of the true visionaries of the Cantorate and it will look forward to gathering with Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi for this well-deserved honor. Mazal Tov to Debbie, Belina, and Jon at this very special time.

At long last, our congregation will have the opportunity to honor
Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi as a Visionary of Anshe Emet on November 14 at 4 PM. During my Rabbinate, it has been my distinct honor to stand on the bimah with Cantor Moses J. Silverman and now Cantor Rachel Brook. For most of my Rabbinate, I have been dedicated to leading services with Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi.
During our more than 30 years together, there was never a moment in which I lost sight of the fact that this man is one of the great hazzanim living in the world today. That Alberto is considered a treasure throughout the world brought great pride to Anshe Emet Synagogue. Watching the faces of the members of our community over the years, it was clear that they were keenly aware that through the artistry of Hazzan Mizrahi they were

The Visionary Awards recognize members of our community who set an inspiring standard of
leadership, community involvement, and professional achievement. Each honoree exemplifies Rabbi Siegel’s
hope for a better world through the core values of learning (limmud), justice (tzedek), and compassion (chesed).
This year’s recipient, Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi, serves as a powerful example of dedication to these core values. His willingness
to lead and his unique contributions have strengthened our Jewish and secular communities. We invite you to join us in celebration and by doing so, help fulfill Rabbi Siegel’s legacy for future generations.

| Music is a Reminder
That Life is Beautiful
Danielle LazarPresident Anshe Emet Synagogue [email protected]
Dear Friends,
What is it about music? It can make us
smile, cry, move. It can inspire us or calm
us. Like many of you, my memories often
have a soundtrack attached to them. My
dad was a classically trained musician and
there was never a time that our house was
not filled with music.
Some of my earliest memories are
of us playing piano together or singing
together – listening to records with my
mom, my sister, cousins and friends. When
my husband Jay and I started dating, one
of our first dates was a concert at the
Boston Symphony. We share a deep love
of classical music, opera, Broadway and the
Great American Songbook – among others.
His favorite band of all time is the Beatles
– and his greatest joy is that both of our
kids love them, too!
Our lives are wrapped in music. We sing
lullabies to our children and teach them
about rhythm by banging on pots and pans.
As kids and teens we learn the words to
songs almost through osmosis. As adults
we relive important moments of our lives –
happy or sad – when we hear a song. Music
is a reminder that life is beautiful.
Here at Anshe Emet we have a rich legacy
of music. From soaring cantorial music,
to acappella prayers, to singalongs with
guitars – we are fortunate to be blessed
with the gift of music and musicians.
With that in mind, it is my great hope
that you will make arrangements to
attend in-person and make a meaningful
gift as we honor Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi
on November 14 at the Visionaries of
Anshe Emet Award Gala. I hope we can
all join together to show him our love
and heartfelt gratitude for his 30 years
of music and exemplary service to Anshe
Emet and to each one of us.

For several years, Rabbi Siegel recognized a growing need in the community for Jewish gravesites within the city. In response, Anshe Emet, through its Endowment Fund, purchased 40 plots at Rosehill Cemetery in 2018. Those plots sold very quickly and with just a few remaining, the Endowment Fund has now purchased an additional 40 plots available to congregants to purchase.Founded in 1859, Rosehill Cemetery is the largest—and one of the older— cemeteries in the city of Chicago. Located in the North Ravenswood neighborhood Rosehill Cemetery is known for the many Civil War soldiers who are buried there.
If you are interested in learning more about purchasing plots in the Anshe Emet section at Rosehill, please contact Mimi Weisberg at (773) 868 – 5123 or [email protected].
