“Aeschi West: Basic Principles in Working with Suicidal Patients” is the inaugural theme of a Mayo Clinic-sponsored three-day conference in Vail, Colorado, May 30-June 1, 2013. Organized around highly interactive lectures, videotaped interviews, seminars, and workshops, a limited number of participants will come to the Rockies to learn an innovative approach for working with suicidal patients.

Drawing on principles developed in a series of meetings at Aeschi, Switzerland, the approach emphasizes the importance of therapist-client collaboration in eliciting narratives of mental anguish that culminate in suicidal behavior. Core faculty members include: Dr. Michael Bostwick (course chair), and Drs. Konrad Michel, John T. Maltsberger, David Jobes, David Rudd, Cheryl King, and others.

Abstracts Overview: The first afternoon of the three-day conference will feature a poster session whose purpose is to showcase participants’ work and stimulate dialogue among conference attendees. Posters can feature data-driven original research on any aspect of suicidology, describe innovative clinical programs or projects related to the assessment and treatment of suicidal patients, or explicate training methods used to increase clinician effectiveness in evaluating such patients. Every effort will be made to include as many posters as possible, based on available space.

Abstract Eligibility: In support of inclusiveness, abstracts are not limited to first-time presentations. Abstracts that have been presented at previous meetings are eligible for consideration, as are abstracts from papers that have already been published.

Number of Entries: A participant may be the primary author on no more than two abstracts; however, he or she may be a contributing author on any number of abstracts.

Abstracts (less than 300 words) should be submitted via email to hain.darla@mayo.edu by April 15, 2013, with notification of acceptance by April 30th.

Course DescriptionThis first-time Mayo Clinic sponsored course extends the tradition of an unparalleled educational experience, the “Aeschi Meetings.” This course will be the seventh meeting of the Aeschi Group, a group of internationally recognized suicide experts dedicated to improving the clinical care of suicidal patients.

Previous attendees have consistently described the course as the best clinical education experience they have ever had. The didactic program consists of brief conceptual lectures introducing videotaped encounters with suicidal patients. From this springboard, all participants engage in discussion of the patient experience and treatment approaches. Due to the singular level of faculty and participant interaction, the course is limited in attendance. Breakfast and lunch are included in the registration and provide further opportunities for discussion about the material presented and clinical care of suicidal patients. The faculty is a collection of national and international experts in clinical assessment and treatment of suicidal crises who are also gifted and dynamic educators.

Intended AudienceAny provider who engages in the assessment and treatment of suicidal patients. This includes but is not limited to psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, registered nurses and psychotherapists, as well as primary care physicians and allied health providers (PAs, NPs, RNs).

Course Learning ObjectivesUpon conclusion of this program, participants should have developed enhanced skills for:

•���Engaging�and�assessing�suicidal�patients in a collaborative working relationship between patient and clinician.

•��Recognizing�signs�and�symptoms�of�imminent risk of self-harm.

•��Developing�a�narrative�of�a�patient’s�suicidality that can serve as the first stage in formulating a treatment plan.
