SHAIKH SALMAN BIN EBRAHIM AL KHALIFA

MESSAGE FROMAFC PRESIDENT

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is proud to be the world leader in women’s futsal development. AFC Women’s Futsal Championship Malaysia 2015 was the first ever pan-Asian women’s futsal championship, and it is currently the only continental women’s futsal competition being staged in the world. The competition highlighted the AFC’s global leadership in the game.

Eight teams took part in the first edition of the competition in Nilai, Malaysia, with impressive performances. It was a truly exciting tournament from start to finish with a total of 93 goals scored in the 16 matches, at an average of 5.8 goals per match. I.R. Iran were crowned inaugural champions of the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship, beating Japan 1-0 in a thrilling final.

I.R. Iran’s performance and the magnificent team goal they scored in their last group stage match against Malaysia generated international interest in the competition and in

women’s futsal in general. This is sure to pave the way for an ever brighter future for the game in the Central Asian nation, as well as in Asia as a whole.

In addition to offering my congratulations to I.R. Iran, I would also like to mention Japan who came second and received the fair-play award of the tournament. Thailand were third in the competition, beating Malaysia. Malaysia’s Farahiyah Binti Muhd Ridzuan was crowned top scorer and the Most Valued Player award was given to Fereshteh Karimi of I.R. Iran. Congratulations to all!

Futsal is growing steadily in Asia. As an indoor sport it is particularly suitable for demanding climates and urban areas with scarce outdoor space. The game can also help develop Asian football at the grassroots and youth level, honing skilful future footballers. Futsal, both men’s and women’s, has a very bright future ahead on our continent.

GENERAL Tournament Overview

AFC WOMEN’S FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA 2015

The Malaysian town of Nilai played host to the inaugural edition of the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship from September 21 to 26 as the AFC became the first FIFA confederation to

introduce a women’s futsal tournament into its portfolio of official competitions.

Invitations to the historic event were based on participation in the previous two editions of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, with the seeding for the 2015 AFC Women’s

Futsal Championship was determined by placings at the 2013 tournament in Incheon.

Gold medallists Japan were the number one seeds in Nilai with runners-up Iran ranked second resulting in the two top seeds being placed in separate groups in the eight-team competition, which also featured 2013 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games bronze-medal winners Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS Technical Analysis

The AFC Women’s Futsal Championship Malaysia 2015 concluded successfully at the Nilai Indoor Stadium with Iran becoming inaugural champions after edging Japan 1-0 in an intense final match.

That championship-winning goal was the 93rd of the six-day, 16-match tournament with each game averaging 5.8 goals, reflecting the aggressive and confident attacking strategy adopted by the teams throughout the keenly-contested competition.

The stronger and more developed futsal nations such as Iran, Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia had clearly put a lot of work into their strategy and planning for the tournament with many teams showing good tactical movement during the high level matches that also showcased players displaying excellent individual skills.

Surprisingly, there was no extra-time required in the any of the four Knockout Stage matches in what was overall a very successful and entertaining event.

AFC WOMEN’S FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA 2015

Time Out:Most time outs took place at the end of the first or second half with many proving to be effective in such situations as changing tactics, adopting the power play, and preparing for set pieces.

Power Play:The power play was utilised by various coaches but was only successful on a few occasions, with Thailand scoring twice against Japan and Malaysia and Vietnam scoring against Iran and China respectively.

Substitutions:Only Japan and Thailand substituted four players at the same time while most other teams went one-by-one.

1. Introduce more women’s youth development programmes in order to prepare young players for the upcoming AFC Women’s Futsal tournaments.

2. Increase the number of participants at the next tournament to encourage more countries in Asia to become active.

3. Improve the physical condition of the players to ensure they have the ability to pressurise their opponents.

4. Introduce the AFC Women’s Club Championship as a next step for the leagues in Asian countries. Strong domestic leagues will help improve the national teams.

5. Encourage Member Associations to conduct more Women’s Futsal coaching courses.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS Story of the Championship

Group B: Thailand 3-1 (2-0) China PR

Thailand claimed the first ever win in the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship with a 3-1 victory over China as the latest edition to the AFC’s portfolio of competitions kicked-off at the Nilai Indoor Stadium.

Sasicha Pothiwong wrote her name in the history books by scoring the tournament’s first goal seven minutes into the Group B encounter before Nipaporn Sriwarom got her name on the score sheet three minutes later as the Thais took control of the contest.

Mao Yifan, who had earlier made a less positive entry into the tournament record books by becoming the first recipient of a yellow card in the 12th minute, pulled one back for the Chinese two minutes into the second period.

However Hataichanok Tappakun, whose stand out performance earned her the tournament’s first Player of the Match award, restored Thailand’s two-goal cushion in the 32nd minute of the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship curtain raiser.

Group B:

Japan 4-2 (3-0) Vietnam

Japan began the quest to add the inaugural AFC Women’s Futsal Championship title to their three consecutive Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games gold medals with a 4-2 win over Vietnam in the second Group B match of the historic tournament.

Japan, Asian Indoor Games women’s futsal winners in 2007, 2009, and most recently 2013 in Incheon, took a three-goal cushion into the interval after a fifth-minute Chikage Kichibayashi penalty was supplemented by further goals from Maiko Higashiyama (10th) and Akari Takao (12th).

Four minutes into the second period Kichibayashi scored her second of the match before a late double from Nguyen Thi Chau (34th, 39th) saw the Vietnamese half the deficit.

MATCH DAY 1

AFC WOMEN’S FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA 2015

Group A: Uzbekistan 4-9 (0-2) Malaysia

Malaysia made an impressive start to their continental campaign as the inaugural AFC Women’s Futsal Championship hosts defeated Uzbekistan 9-4 in Group A curtain raiser.

The action went from one end of the court to the other but while there was no shortage of excitement, the match remained goalless for the first quarter-of-an-hour.

Norhawa Yasin broke the deadlock in the 15th minute before Farahiyah Ridzuan struck 60 seconds later to give the home side a 2-0 lead at the break.

Nur Shazreen extended Malaysia’s advantage four minutes into the second period and although Makhliyo Sarikova got Uzbekistan on the scoreboard in the 25th minute, Usliza Usman hit the target to restore her side’s three-goal cushion barely a minute later before Norhawa extended the lead to four goals with her second of the game in the 27th minute.

The Uzbeks endeavoured to find a way back into the contest as the match entered into the final ten minutes and in the 32nd minute Sarikova grabbed her second and Mahliyo Yusupova also got on the scoresheet as the Central Asians pegged the score back to 5-3.

With five minutes remaining Sarikova became the first player to score a hat-trick at the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship and it wasn’t long before Norhawa and Farahiyah followed in her footsteps and scored their trebles.

Norhawa became the first Malaysian to net a hat-trick at the ground-breaking tournament when she scored her third in the 38th minute after goals from Farahiyah (35th) and Fatin Shahida (37th) before Farahiyah sealed the 9-4 victory as she became the third player to claim a treble when she scored the final goal of the game with a minute left on the clock.

Group A: IR Iran 6-0 (1-0) Hong Kong

Sara Sherbeigi emerged as the leading scorer at the end of Match Day 1 with her four goals propelling Iran to a 6-0 victory over Hong Kong.

A fifth-minute Fahimeh Zarei goal was all that separated the two sides at the end of the first period before the Iranians raised their game after the interval as Sherbeigi stole the show with four goals (24th, 29th, 34th, 35th) to top the hat-tricks scored by Makhliyo Sarikova, Norhawa Yasin, and Farahiyah Ridzuan in Malaysia’s 9-4 defeat of Uzbekistan in the earlier Group A fixture.

Fereshteh Karimi also got her name on the scoresheet in the 32nd minute of the victory that saw Iran top the Group A table ahead of the Malaysians at the end of the history-making first day of the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship, the first continental tournament of its kind amongst all the FIFA member confederations.

AFC WOMEN’S FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA 2015

Group B: China PR 3-2 (1-1) Vietnam

China reignited their chances of a place in the semi-finals with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Vietnam, whose hopes of a place in the final four suffered a serious setback with their second successive Group B defeat.

Both sides badly needed a win after losing their tournament debuts and it was China that took the lead through Liu Jing’s second-minute strike.

Vietnam fought back strongly and after missing a number of opportunities through their own profligacy as well as the frame of the Chinese goal, they finally got the equaliser their pressure deserved, with Pham ThiTuoi restoring parity with four minutes of the first period remaining.

Nguyen Thi My Anh put Vietnam 2-1 up just a minute after the half-time interval before a Mao Yifan double settled the contest in China’s favour, with the 20-year-old equalising in the 30th minute before scoring the winner five minutes later.

Group B: Thailand 2-4 (0-3) Japan

Buoyed by their triumph over China in the first-ever fixture of the history-making tournament, the Thais approached their second match with confidence, but Japan proved to be a tougher proposition for South East Asia’s top side as the three-time Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games gold medal winners would made it two-wins-out-of two with a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

Mutsumi Sakata’s sixth-minute opener was all that separated the two sides until Japan doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Chikage Kichibayashi scored her third of the campaign following her brace against Vietnam.

Kichibayashi extended the lead in the 31st minute with a goal that saw her join Iran’s Sara Sherbeigi as the tournament’s joint-leading scorer but Japan were to endure a nervous end to the the match they appeared to be dominating as Thailand coach Rakphol Sainetngam employed the power play in the remaining eight minutes.

MATCH DAY 2

Page 21: AFC WOMEN S FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA 2015

21

AFC WOMEN’S FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA 2015

The tactic nearly paid off for the Thais as Mamyalee Sawitree and Siranya Srimanee scored in the 36th and 38th minutes respectively but in the end the three-time SEA Games champions ran out of time as Japan went three points clear at the top of Group B with just one round of matches remaining ahead for the semi-finals.

Group A: Malaysia 4-1(1-1) Hong Kong

Hosts Malaysia picked up their second Group B win when they came from a goal down to defeat Hong Kong 4-1, with Farahiyah Ridzuan’s two-minute double taking her to the top of the scoring charts.

Having gone down 6-0 to Iran on their tournament debut, Hong Kong finally got on the score sheet when Wong So Han netted her country’s first-ever AFC Women’s Futsal Championship goal, five minutes into meeting with Malaysia.

But Hong Kong’s lead would last just two minutes, with Kwong Wing Yang’s own goal drawing the tournament hosts level, with the East Asian duos’ goals at either end of the court transpiring to be the only scoring in the first period.

The score remained locked at 1-1 until the half-hour mark when Fatin Shahida put the Malaysians in front before Farahiyah Ridzuan extended the home side’s advantage with goals in the 33rd and 35th minutes to take her tally for the tournament to five.

Group A: Uzbekistan 1-9 (1-4) IR Iran

Iran stormed into the semi-finals a 9-1 victory over Uzbekistan, with the two-time West Asian champions’ emphatic win also ensuring host Malaysia’s place in the final four.

Iran needed just five minutes to get on the scoresheet with Fereshteh Karimi getting the first goal of a first period dominated by the 2013 Asian Indoor Games silver medallists.

Sepideh Zarrinrad doubled the lead in the 8th minute and although MahliyoYusupova got the Uzbeks on the scoreboard just sixty seconds later, Iran quickly regained the upper hand as goals from skipper Nasimeh Gholami (13th) and Sohila Tarazi (18th) gave the West Asians a comfortable 4-1 cushion to take into the second period.

Iran continued to control the game after the interval although their cause was considerably helped by the unfortunate Makhliyo Sarakova, who netted two own goals in the space of 60 seconds (25th, 26th).

The demoralised Uzbeks conceded three more in the remainder of the match with Sara Sherbeigi claiming her fifth of the campaign in the 29th minute to join Malaysia’s Farahiyah Ridzuan as the tournament’s leading scorer, before a Fahimeh Zarei strike a minute later and another from Karimi with three minutes remaining saw Uzbekistan breached nine times for the second time following their 9-4 loss to Malaysia.

Group B: Vietnam 1-2 (1-1) Thailand

Thailand booked their place in the semi-finals after their 2-1 come-from-behind victory was followed by China’s loss to table-toppers Japan, as Group B of the historic tournament came to an end.

With defeats in their previous fixtures, Vietnam were out of the reckoning for a place in the final four as Truong Quoc Tuan’s side looked to bow out of the competition with their first win, while Thailand were looking for the victory that would see them move up to six points and subsequently qualify for the final four should China fail to take maximum points against Japan.

Thailand got the victory they needed the hard way with Siranya Srimanee’s 18th-minute strike cancelling out Pham ThiTuoi’s second-minute opener, before SasichaPhothiwong netted the match-winner with just two minutes left on the clock.

Group B: Japan 7-1 (5-0) China PR

Japan advanced to the semi-finals with a 100% record following a 7-1 defeat of China, a result that also confirmed Thailand’s place in the final four as Group B runners-up.

Having already defeated Vietnam and the Thais, Japan took the first step towards a hat-trick of victories when skipper Shiori Nakajima opened the scoring with three minutes gone before three goals in the space of two minutes - two from Saori Kato (7th, 8th) and one from Minako Sekinada (8th) - and an Anna Amishiro strike on the stroke of half-time gave the three-time Asian Indoor Games’ gold medallists a commanding 5-0 lead at the interval.

China finally got on the scoresheet in the 33rd minute through Liu Jing but Japan’s five-goal cushion was restored four minutes later courtesy of Maiko Higashiyama before China’s disappointing final match was compounded when defender Wang Hui inadvertently put the ball into her own net to gift Japan a seventh just before full time.

MATCH DAY 3

Page 23: AFC WOMEN S FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA 2015

AFC WOMEN’S FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA 2015

Group A: Hong Kong 3-3 (1-0) Uzbekistan

Hong Kong ended their inaugural AFC Women’s Futsal Championship campaign third in the Group A standings ahead of Uzbekistan of on goal difference after the two sides played out a 3-3 in their final fixture.

The Uzbeks appeared to be heading towards their first victory until Hong Kong skipper Kwong Wing Yan’s last-minute equaliser earned the East Asians a share of the spoils after trailing 3-1 following a blistering spell of Uzbekistan dominance that saw Avaz Maksumov’s score three times in two minutes at the start of the second period.

Kwong had given Hong Kong a 14th minute lead with the only goal of the first half and the East Asians held the advantage until the 22nd minute when Mahliyo Yusupova drew the Uzbeks level before two goals in the 24th minute minute from Feruza Turdiboeva and Makhliyo Sarikova - her fourth of the competition - turned the tide of the match in the Central Asians favour.

Ng Wing Kum pulled one back for Hong Kong in the 31st minute and with just seconds remaining before the final buzzer, Kwong struck the goal that saw her side end their campaign in third, with the Uzbeks left counting the cost of conceding nine times against both Iran and tournament hosts Malaysia in their earlier matches.

Group A: IR Iran 4-2 (1-1) Malaysia

Iran set up a semi-final showdown with Thailand as the West Asians defeated Malaysia 4-2 to top Group A ahead of the tournament hosts as an entertaining group phase of the inaugural tournament came to an end.

Fahimeh Zarei opened the scoring in the first minute and the Iranians held the lead for a good quarter-of-an-hour when Farahiyah Ridzuan drew the Malaysians level from the penalty spot, with Iran skipper Nasimeh Gholami unluckily sent off after Usliza Usman’s powerful shot cannoned off the frame of the goal and hit her hand as she charged into the area to clear the danger.

Iran recovered from the setback and Sepideh Zarrinrad’s 23rd-minute effort made it 2-1 before Fereshteh Karimi added to her side’s advantage with goals in the 27th and 29th minutes.

In an attempt to find a way back into the tie, Malaysia coach Chiew Chun Yong employed the power play and while the attacking tactic returned only one goal of the three they needed to go level with the Iranians it did result in Farahiyah Ridzuan going clear at the top of the scoring charts, with the 21-year-old’s 39th minute consolation for the hosts taking her personal tally to seven, two more than the Iranian duo of Karimi and Sara Shirbeigi.

IR Iran 1-0 (0-0) Thailand

Iran advanced to the final of the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship after beating Thailand 1-0, with substitute Zohreh Meisami proving the difference for the West Asians when she scored her first goal of the campaign in the second half following a thrilling first period.

Thailand striker Sasicha Phothiwong spurned the first real opportunity of the game in the opening minute when she went one on one with Farzaneh Tavasoli but her weak attempt was easily tapped away by the diving keeper.

The action quickly shifted to the Thailand half when forward Sepideh Zarrinrad was fouled in the third minute, her subsequent free-kick, however, rattled the woodwork.

A minute later, Iran’s Fereshteh Karimi hit the bar with a free-kick, before Thailand’s Prapasporn Sriroj tried an audacious lob from distance that was smartly stopped by the busy Tavasoli.

After a goalless first half, both sides came out after the break desperate to find the breakthrough, but Thailand seemed to be faltering with their final passes as Iran grew in confidence.

The key moment came in the 32nd minute when Fahimah Zarei’s neat pass connected perfectly with Meisami who fired home with Thailand keeper Pannipa Kamolrat rooted to the spot.

Meisami then had a chance to double her tally, but the 27-year-old forward sent the ball high over the bar when well placed.

It mattered little in the end though, as Iran - despite having to withstand some intense late pressure during which the

Thais hit the post twice in a matter of seconds - duly hung on to seal their passage through to the final.

Japan 8-1 (3-0) Malaysia

Japan joined Iran in the final of the inaugural AFC Women’s Futsal Championship when they beat Malaysia 8-1 to seal their progress.

A stirring second-half display saw the East Asians eventually notch their 22nd goal of the competition when tournament joint leading scorer Chikage Kichibayashi rammed home her side’s eighth of the game in the final moments of an entertaining encounter.

Having impressed during the group stage, the hosts were to find the going much tougher against a strong Japan side who took the lead in the second minute following Mutsumi Sakata’s surging run and powerful shot.

Forward Anna Amishiro doubled Japan’s advantage some ten minutes later from close range, before Kana Kitagawa tapped in to send a jubilant Japan in at the break three goals to the good.

Worse was to come for Malaysia after the break however, as Maiko Higashiyama further extended her side’s lead in the 23rd minute with a neat volley ahead of Sakata’s second of the match 12 minutes later.

Malaysian goalkeeper Sity Norazizah Jamal reduced the deficit with an incredible long-range effort from her own area, only to see Kichibayashi score a quick-fire hat-trick in the match’s dying embers to take her Championship tally to seven and ensure Japan’s showdown with Iran who beat Thailand 1-0 in the day’s earlier game.

THIRD PLACE

PLAY-OFF

Thailand claimed third place in the inaugural AFC Women’s Futsal Championship after beating hosts Malaysia 4-1.

Thailand were the more dangerous of the two ASEAN sides in the first half, and it was they who had the first real opportunity of the game in the second minute when Siranya Srimanee failed to make the most of a free-kick when well placed.

Malaysia responded when Fatin Shahida Azmi’s smart pass found Farahiyah Ridzuan who failed to trouble Thailand keeper Pannipa Kamolrat.

Thailand were then thwarted by an impressive Nurul Atiqa in the Malaysian goal before the hosts drew first blood with Masturah Majid’s soft header proving too much for Thai custodian Pannipa on 11 minutes.

However Chiew Chun Yong’s side surrendered their lead just two minutes later when a corner throw in by Thailand’s Pacharaporn Srimuan found another substitute, Mamyalee Sawitree, whose shot rolled between Atiqa’s legs and into the net.

On 15 minutes, an unmarked Hataichanok Tappakun handed Thailand the lead thanks to some lapse Malaysian defending. Malaysia’s Farahiyah Ridzuan had a chance to level matters before the break but her hastily taken shot went wide.

The Thais pushed on in the second half and duly extended their advantage when Darika Peanpailun fired home ahead of an own goal by Malaysia substitute Nur Shazreen Munazli which ended the game as a contest

IR Iran 1-0 (1-0) Japan

Iran were crowned inaugural champions of the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship after beating Japan 1-0 in a thrilling final.

Both teams were quick out of the blocks and the first chance of note came in the fourth minute as Iran’s Fereshteh Karimi sprinted down the right and tested Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Yamamoto with a fierce drive.

Barely a minute later, Karimi had another up close and personal encounter with the Japan custodian but yet again her effort was stopped by the impressive Yamamoto’s legs.

However, the breakthrough was to come for Iran on eight minutes as an unmarked Karimi finally made her mark following confusion in the Japan area.

FINAL

The pulsating encounter continued when Mutsumi Sakata fired a rocket of a shot that Farzaneh Tavasoli in the Iran goal did well to palm away.

On 18 minutes Fatemeh Etetadi fouled Sakata whose clever free-kick found skipper Shiori Nakajima but the Japan captain’s shot failed to find a way past Tavasoli in what was to prove the final opportunity of the first half.

Japan regained the initiative six minutes into the second period when Saori Kato connected with a corner only to see her effort saved by Tavasoli.

Kato then had a shot blocked by Etedadi’s body, before, in a breathless finale, Tavasoli reacted superbly to deny Nakajima and ensure her side of the title.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS Medical Report

The AFC leaves no stone unturned when it comes to the protection of players’ health and well-being and the medical department plays its part in the overall development of the game of futsal in Asia, as well as helping to ensure fair play at the tournaments.

The inaugural AFC Women’s Futsal Championship was successfully organised with the AFC ensuring that medical care was readily and efficiently carried out when required.

Two separate Team Physician’s Pre-Coordination Meetings were organised to update the knowledge of those responsible for the health welfare of the players. Doping Control was also carried out during the competition, helping the players become educated on the issues surrounding drug and stimulant misuse.

Finally, the incidences of injuries were also recorded as part of the AFC’s on-going comprehensive study of injuries in AFC tournaments.

MEDICAL INFRASTRUCTUREWith the excellent support and cooperation of the Institute Sukan Negara Malaysia the medical services and infrastructure were in place for the championship as per international standards.

The AFC appointed Dr. Mya Lay Sein from Myanmar and Dr. Emily Merzo Zerrudo from Philippines to oversee the medical aspects and doping control implementation for the tournament. The AFC Medical Officers were satisfied with the infrastructure

as well as the services provided to the teams and officials throughout the tournament.

Nilai Medical Centre was designated as the referral hospital for match days while Assunta Hospital was the standby hospital for non-match days. These hospitals provided excellent services in terms of diagnosis, investigation and treatment of injured players.

At the Nilai Spring Resort Hotel, where the AFC tournament headquarters were situated, a number of minor conditions (such as headaches, sore throat, cough and flu) were examined and treated by the medical officer. All cases were satisfactorily resolved.

DOPING CONTROLWith the AFC committed to ensuring fair play, doping control was carried out, with one player per team randomly selected from two matches. * The samples were analysed at the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) accredited New Delhi National Dope Testing Laboratory in India and

the results showed that one test reported positive and one proved to be negative. The selected players and their accompanying medical representatives cooperated fully with the testing process.

INJURIES SUSTAINED BY FUTSAL PLAYER Team physicians and physiotherapists were asked to report all injuries and illness sustained by the players during the tournament to provide data for the on-going assessment of injuries that the AFC, in collaboration with F-MARC, has been conducting since 1998. The data gathered is compiled and used for scientific evidence to support the development of injury prevention programs.

The importance of the role of the team physician in recording injuries and illnesses and the significance of ensuring accurate reporting was explained during a Pre-competition Medical Coordination Meeting held on September 20. The level of cooperation was commendable as 100% compliance was achieved.

INTRODUCTION

The AFC appointed 14 match officials and two standby referees for the inaugural AFC Women’s Futsal Championship, seven of which were female. In addition to the referees, Referees Instructors and a Referees’ Fitness Instructor were also appointed for the championship, with all the match officials involved having the opportunity to be assessed, guided, and supported throughout the tournament. All parties involved reported for duty on September 18.

PREPARATORY COURSE

The aim of the Preparatory Course was to ensure that the match officials were ready, both physically and mentally, to officiate in the competition. The three main elements of the course were:

1. Fitness Test2. Theoretical Session3. Practical Session

FITNESS TEST

A Fitness Test of the futsal referees and standby referees was carried out on September 20 and was divided into two parts, namely the Endurance Test, which took place at the USIM Track & Field Sport Complex, and a Speed and Agility Test, which was held at the Nilai Indoor Stadium. The Referee Fitness Instructor, assisted by the Futsal

Referees Instructors and the Local Organising Committee (LOC), conducted the test while a medical team and ambulance were on standby if needed. Of the 16 match officials that took the test, 14 passed while two of the appointed referees failed to complete the tasks in the required time.

THEORETICAL SESSIONS

Theoretical sessions of the Preparatory Course were held on September 19 and 20 with the underlying theme of the two sessions encouraging the referees to be committed, courageous, and consistent when they perform of the futsal court. The key points covered were:

1. Consistency/Uniformity on Foul Recognition/Degree of Foul

2. Protecting the Players 3. Letting the Game Flow4. Substitutions and Bench Control

PRACTICAL SESSIONS

Two Practical Sessions were held at the Nilai Indoor Stadium during Preparatory Course in which the Futsal Referee Instructors conducted training sessions on simulated match situations that dealt with positioning, movement, signalling and other game day requirements.

APPOINTMENT OF REFEREES

The referees for the first match day were announced one day prior to kick-off following the debriefing session. Subsequent appointments for each match were made and distributed to the relevant officials after discussions with the Referees Instructors, with the decision based on their performances as well as the need for neutrality, taking into account the nations playing. Four referees were released following the conclusion of the Group Stage.

PHYSICAL TRAINING

With four matches played everyday for three consecutive days in the Group Stage and each referee having a match appointment the primary emphasis on the physical training during the tournament related to recovery. Physical training and technical sessions conducted by the appointed AFC Fitness Instructor were held every morning from 0700 to 0745 in the gym at the Nilai Springs Resort Hotel. The focus of these sessions was to prepare for consecutive matches by reducing fatigue from the previous game and to ‘reset’ the body for the next fixture.

STATISTICAL DATA Awards

FAIRPLAY AWARDS:

JAPANAFC Women’s Futsal Championship 2015 runners-up Japan won the Fair Play Award after amassing 47.91 points, becoming the first recipients of the accolade having garnered 0.61 points more than tournament champions Iran.

Teams are assessed in five categories, with a further category relating to the behavior of the public. This is how the points are calculated.

1. Red and Yellow Card (max. 10 marks):If a player who is on a yellow card (-1 point) commits another yellow card offence, only the red card will count (-3 points). But if a player who has already been cautioned then commits a red card offence, both cards will count (sothe player will receive -4 points). This is the only section in which it is possible to receive a score below zero.

2. Positive Play (max. 10 marks):This is designed to encourage attractive play that will increase the enjoyment of spectators and the following areas are taken into consideration:

Positive• Using attacking tactics, not defensive• Speeding up the game• Efforts to gain time (e.g. bringing the ball back into

play quickly even if the team is in a winning position)• Continuing to push for goals when in a winning position• Negative• Slowing down the game• Time wasting• Tactics based on foul play• Play-acting (simulation)

3. Respect towards the opponent (max. 5 marks):Players should respect the Laws of the Game and abide by the spirit of Fair Play. The Fair Play delegate’s assessment will not double count items already covered in the ‘Red andYellow cards’ category, but the seriousness of the offences punished by cards may be considered. This category will also include offences overlooked by the referee. Any singlemajor incident between players may have a significant bearing on the final score.

4. Respect towards the referee (max. 5 marks):Players are expected to respect the officials - including assistants - at all times. The Fair Play delegate’s assessment will not double count items already covered in the ‘Red and Yellow cards’ but the seriousness of the offences punished by cards may be considered. Any single major incident may have a significant bearing on the score.A positive attitude, including the acceptance of doubtful decisions without protest, will be rewarded with high marks

5. Behaviour of the officials (max. 5 marks):Team officials, including coaches, are expected to develop the sporting, technical and tactical level of their team – and instruct players to behave in accordance with the Fair Play principles. Positive and negative aspects of the team officials’ conduct will be assessed – such as whether they calm down or provoke angry players or fans and how they accept the decisions of the referee. Co-operation with the media will also be taken into account. Any single major incident may have a significant bearing on the final mark, as will breachesof the regulations governing the dugout and technical area.

Fairplay Awards Criteria:

Total Number of points (x 10 / (40*)).

In addition, there is one further category assessed by the Fair Play delegate
