Democracy in Theory And Practice: What Makes Democracy Work?

In this three session course Dr. Casey will explore the concept of citizenship from its democraticorigins in the 5th century Athens to the present day, discussing how it has evolved as a concept andwhat impact those changes have made on various political systems. The idea of citizenship oftenmoves beyond a person possessing a bundle of rights that must be respected to also include theresponsibilities citizens have to the state and to actively engage in democratic governance. Thistopic is always important in a democracy, but it takes on special meaning in a presidential electionyear, particularly one that highlights distinctions between citizens and non-citizens regardingimmigration and other policy matters. In this discussion-oriented course, we will explore the many ways the English language changesover time. We'll begin by looking at several modern-day examples of language change, such as thenormalization of the words "irregardless" and "ain't" and the controversy, in both writing andspeech, over gender-neutral personal pronouns. We'll also investigate how pandemics affect thevocabulary of English and conventional 'rules' of syntax and structure. Spelling norms, as well astraditional ideas about punctuation, have also been on the move. In addition to the linguistic bitsand pieces above, we will consider examples participants bring to the conversation. (Class limit: 25)
