AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS — FALL 2018Please enjoy the following descriptions of the enriching play-centered clubs we have planned for the fall term.

Clubs will begin the week of September 17 (with Wednesday clubs beginning on September 26), and end the week of December 3. Make-up classes will take place during the week of December 10.

Clubs will not meet on the following days: Wednesday, September 19; Friday, November 2; the week of Thanksgiving Break (Monday, November 19 through Friday, November 23). Note: The Musical – Turkeys Go on Strike club will end on Friday, November 16 (the Friday before Thanksgiving).

1. 3D Paper Arts and OrigamiThursdays, 3:10-4 p.m. (no club 11/22) Preschool-Kindergarten (ages 3-6) | $225Ada Cheung will be leading this club that dives into projects like 3D bookmarks of animals, superheroes, cartoon characters, or food. Students will also make basic origami, paper hand puppets, pop up cards, and spinning decorative mobiles. This club will help enhance digital dexterity, small motor skills, and the ability to follow directions.

2. All-Star Sports with Coach C. and Obvious Choice AthleticsTuesdays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/20) Grades Kindergarten-5 | $255The All-Star Sports Club with Coach C. and Obvious Choice Athletics offers young athletes the opportunity to play and improve their skills in a wide range of sports, including soccer, floor hockey, Ultimate Frisbee, and dodgeball. In addition to in-depth instruction, participants hone such important individual skills as eye-hand coordination, strategic thinking, and sportsmanship all while having loads of fun playing games under the direction of GFS’s zaniest and most charismatic after-school coach!

3. Amazing ZoomDanceFridays, 3:10-3:55 p.m. (no club 11/2, 11/23) Preschool-Kindergarten (ages 3-6) | $235ZoomDance classes are filled with dance, music, storytelling, imagination, and fun! Each week the class will read a new story, then explore the characters and plot through rhythmic movement, songs, and performance. Kids build confidence while developing agility, coordination, and balance through a range of creative activities. ZoomDance creator and instructor Sarah Gladwin Camp is a professional dancer and choreographer who has taught children’s dance, music, and drama throughout Europe and in Philadelphia. 4. BALLET: The NutcrackerTuesdays, 3:10-3:55 p.m. (no club 11/20) Preschool-Kindergarten (ages 2-6) | $265

This fall, dancers will learn the story of Tchaikovsky’s stunning ballet, The Nutcracker! Dancers will learn about Clara, Herr Drosselmeyer, the Mouse King, and the Sugar Plum Fairy. They also will delight in acting out famous scenes from this classic tale. Beloved professional ballet instructor Fallon Gannon will share the joy of moving to music.The performance of The Nutcracker is scheduled for Wednesday, December 5.Please note: Preschool students of any age may enroll. class is open to dancers of all genders. Students will need their own ballet attire and slippers. Slippers, a leotard and tights, or a T-shirt with black leggings are recommended. Dancers should wear the attire they feel best suits them. Dance wear can be purchased through discountdance.com or at a local dance store.

5. Basketball with Coach C. and Obvious Choice AthleticsFridays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/2, 11/23) Grades 1-5 | $265Basketball Club participants will hone essential skills such as shooting, passing, dribbling, and defense. Game concepts such as identifying opponents’ strengths and weaknesses and understanding basic defensive strategies will also be incorporated. In addition to developing players’ conditioning, flexibility, and speed, Coach C. will work with players to build self-confidence and physical endurance, while strengthening their teamwork and sportsmanship skills.

6. Bread BakingTuesdays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/20) Grades 2-6 | $235Every culture boasts a special kind of bread whether the French baguette or the Persian pita. Participants in this flour-filled club will love kneading their way around the world as they prepare such possible delights as pão de queijo (cheese bread) from Brazil, naan from India, pretzels from Germany, injera from Ethiopia, pumpkin bread from the Basque Region, challah from Israel, pan de muertos

from Mexico, and even good ol’ American corn bread. Join GFS’s own head chef Steve Baumann in learning about different cultures through the breads they eat!

7. Ceramics: The Clay ClubWednesdays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 9/19, 11/21) Grades 1-4 | $265This fall, Ceramics: The Clay Club will focus on seasonal motifs and will include a variety of projects such as apple or acorn bowls, Halloween-themed objects, Día de Muertos sugar skulls, a Thanksgiving-themed project, and other items that participants might wish to give as holiday gifts. There also will be some days for “free” clay play. In addition, students will participate in the “Empty Bowls” service project, making and donating bowls for a dinner that raises funds for Philadelphia families with food insecurity. Expert ceramicist Lynne Dorman, who has been teaching ceramics to children for nearly a decade, will be bringing her love of clay and art to this fun-filled after school club. The cost of all materials is included in the club fee.

8. Chess – Lower School (Rookie)Tuesdays, 11:35 a.m.-12:20 p.m. (no club 11/20) Grades 2-4 | $245

Newcomers are welcome to join the Lower School Chess Club (though they may wish to arrange an individual lesson or two with Ross beforehand). This group will continue

their study of center control, development of knights and bishops, and king safety. As always, the focus will be on thinking BEFORE touching and on asking ourselves, “What is my opponent trying to do?” and “What is going to happen to my piece if I go there?” The emphasis is not on winning, but on having fun while learning one of the planet’s oldest and most popular games.

9. Chess – Lower School TournamentWednesdays, 11:55 a.m.-12:35 p.m. (no club 9/19, 11/21) Grades 4-5 | $245The Lower School Tournament Chess Club is for experienced chess players who already have competed in one or more chess tournaments.Third graders invited by Ross are eligible to participate from 11:55 a.m. until 12:25 p.m.

10. Chess – Middle SchoolTuesdays, 12:55-1:35 p.m. (no club 11/20) Grades 6-8 | $245Middle School Chess Club is geared toward students who have had at least a full year of chess instruction. This group will continue learning about forks, pins, skewers, discovered

attacks, and removing the defender. Concepts such as “zugzwang,” “opposition,” “backwards,” and “isolated” pawns, and “holes” will also be introduced. Recording and playing on the clock are encouraged but are not mandatory. Ross also will delve deeper into opening and middlegame traps, and all basic endgames will be mastered, including: 2-Rook (step ladder) checkmate, Queen/King and Rook/King (boxing) checkmates, and king/pawn endgames.

11. Comix Club with JT WaldmanFridays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/2, 11/23) Grades 4-8 | $195The Clubs Program is thrilled to welcome noted author/illustrator JT Waldman to GFS! JT will be teaching in the Upper School and will also be offering an after school club. Learn how to become a visual storyteller through the language of sequential art! This club will focus on the fundamentals of drawing and storytelling. We will explore storyboards, comics books, webcomics, and zines to see how memoir, non-fiction, and fantasy come to life through panels and gutters.

Computer Coding and LEGO® Mindstorms RoboticsWednesdays, 3:25-4:25 p.m. (no club 9/19, 11/21) Grades 3-8 | $245Participants in Matt Zipin’s club will have the option of focusing on either LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 Robotics or coding projects using Scratch and Python. In other words, participants will be free to choose the area into which they wish to dig more deeply. Of course, newcomers are welcome to join the club as well!ASPire or MSAS coverage from 3:10-3:25 p.m. is included in the cost of the club.

13. Essential Wood Turning with Eli ScearceTuesdays, 6-8 p.m. (no club 11/20) 14 years old to Adult | $335GFS’s own woodshop teacher Eli Scearce will be offering a wood turning club this fall. This workshop is an opportunity for Upper School students and adults in our community to learn the basics of turning wood. We will start out learning to turn a simple bowl and then move to spindle turning techniques. Once tools are mastered, students will explore this skill by making projects of their own choice. Club fees include the cost of materials.

14. Hip-Hop with Movemakers PhillyThursdays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/22) Grades 1-3 | $245Movemakers Philly’s renowned hip-hop classes combine martial arts-like technique with fast, energetic choreography. Participants will not only learn the evolution of hip-hop as a dance form, they will also study choreography from the latest music videos. Each session will begin with warm-up exercises before the music starts and the class begins learning and creating their own complex dance moves. Students will be encouraged to find their own identities through movement and to explore “the choreographer within,” by creating portions of the final routine themselves.

15. Jewelry Making with ShaniseMondays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/19) Grades 1-5 | $195What do zippers, bobbins, buttons, keys, dice, dominoes and game pieces all have in common? They can be transformed into wearable art! Join experienced jewelry maker Shanise Hames for an after-school club for kids who want to use their imaginations to

create upcycled jewelry for themselves or give as gifts to loved ones. Shanise will not only introduce basic jewelry-making techniques, but she also may take club participants on an expedition to a local thrift store to search for hidden treasures just waiting to be transformed!If you have any old jewelry (especially costume jewelry) you’d be willing to donate, please drop it off in the Lower School Office or the Auxiliary Programming Office.

16. Karate IMondays, 3:10-4 p.m. (no club 11/19) Preschool-Kindergarten (ages 3-6) | $26517. Karate IIMondays, 4:05-5 p.m. (no club 11/19) Grades 1-5 | $265

Under the direction of expert martial artist Mr. Edgard Velez, Karate I and II students will learn and practice drills designed to condition their minds and bodies while also emphasizing fun. Mr. Edgard specializes in teaching children of all ages, experience levels and backgrounds, and he is dedicated to instilling the benefits of hard work, respect, compassion and drive both in and out of class.The Karate Belt Ceremonies will take place on Monday, December 3.Please note: ASPire coverage for students in Karate II is available from 3:10-4:05 p.m. for a modest additional fee.

18. Lacrosse with Abbey StaceWednesdays, 3:10-4:10 p.m. (no club 9/19, 11/21) Grades 3-5 | $195

Join GFS Middle School coach Abbey Stace for an after school lacrosse club for all levels of experience. We will focus on fundamental stick work skills of lacrosse either introducing players to the basics or developing and strengthening those with more experience. We will introduce game concepts and positional play with small-sided competitions. Come out and meet new friends, build confidence, and fall in love with the fastest game on two feet!Due to gym space limitations, this club will only take place when the weather cooperates. If any sessions are cancelled and cannot be made up, parents will receive a pro-rated refund.

20. Let’s Go Code, Girl!Fridays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/2, 11/16, 11/23) Grades 5-8 | $125“I think everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.” – Steve Jobs, Apple cofounder

As programming jobs in the US grow 12 percent faster than the market average, the percentage of women working in the computer science/technology field has declined. According to US News and World Report, 37 percent of computer science majors in 1984 were women, yet by 2014, that number had dropped to 18 percent.

Under the direction of Middle School Computer Coordinator Laura Jamieson, girls will learn to code—or deepen their existing programming knowledge. This club will focus on helping participants develop their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, as well as building teamwork and leadership skills.Note: ASPire or MSAS coverage is available from 3:10-3:20 p.m. for a modest additional fee.

21. Mandarin I - Little PandasThursdays, 3:10-4:15 p.m. (no club 11/22) Grades 1-4 | $245The objective of this club is to encourage a lifelong interest in Chinese culture and civilization. Our program utilizes the My First Chinese Words curriculum, which offers an introduction to key vocabulary words and sentence structures. Students also will read supplementary Chinese storybooks, watch DVDs about martial arts, and create arts and crafts related to Chinese holidays and traditions. Join Yi Li, Upper School Mandarin teacher, who will share her love of language with our Little Pandas in hopes of stoking their curiosity about foreign cultures.

22. Musical: Turkeys Go on Strike Fridays, 3:10-4:25 p.m. (no club 11/2 | club ends on 11/16) Grades 3-8 | $195Join Jenny Hutchison for this fun musical theatre club. Thanksgiving is in danger of cancelation due to some extremely dissatisfied poultry. Negotiations go on around the clock—an event covered by TV reporters and influenced by ambitious members of the Squash family. Sing, dance, act, and laugh through this annual Thanksgiving musical!The performance of this musical is scheduled for Monday, November 20.

23. Once Upon a Time: Prince and Princess ClubMondays, 3:10-4:10 p.m. (no club 11/19) Preschool-Kindergarten (ages 3-6) | $225This fall, GFS’s own Food Services Director, Jessica Borkosky, will again share her love of fairy tales with students who love dressing up, doing crafts, and baking treats. Each week, the Once Upon a Time Club will focus on a different enchanting tale, including Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Belle, Tiana, Mulan, Merida, and, of course, Cinderella! Participants are invited to dress up as their favorite royalty.

24. OrigamiMondays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/19) Grades 1-4 | $225Origami is the Japanese word for paper folding. Ori means “folding”, and kami meaning “paper”. Students will create paper forms entirely by folding. Student will learn basic techniques such as the mountain and valley folds as well as advanced methods like the inner and outer reverse folds. Animals, birds, fish, geometric shapes, puppets, toys, and masks are among the models that children can learn to make.

25. Playwriting with Geo O’DonnellMondays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/19) Grades 3-6 | $195Do you like making up stories and acting them out? Playwriting club is the perfect place to explore the creative storyteller that lives inside each of us. Through writing exercises, students will learn a little bit about script structure and theatrical form. They will then begin making their own one act plays. We will share our work aloud, then get up and act it out. The club will culminate in a reading that will be open to all. No previous theatrical experience necessary!

Through quality, high-energy soccer programming with instruction from highly trained coaches, Soccer Shots emphasizes soccer skills and character development with fun, age-appropriate play. Soccer Shots instructors use each session to teach children important character and social concepts, such as teamwork, confidence and respect. Moreover, their weekly, season-long approach will take children from the most basic understanding of soccer through the ten fundamental skills all soccer players need to know. 29. Writing Wizardry and BookmakingTuesdays, 3:20-4:20 p.m. (no club 11/20) Grades 2-5 | $1955th grade teacher Alison Crawford will lead this writing and bookmaking club. Do you have a great story you have been waiting to tell? A poem on the tip of your tongue? Join us to test out many styles of writing and then turn your ideas into books of all shapes and sizes!

30. You Go Girls™Thursdays, 3:10-5 p.m. (no club 11/22) Grades 3-5 | $255You Go Girls™ is a club that supports sisterhood and self-esteem in the context of running. Under the direction of GFS parents and running enthusiasts Katie Scrivner and Chris Peterson, this dynamic group of young women will set and reach goals they never imagined possible! In addition to running, club participants also will build self-confidence, deepen friendships and work on enhancing body satisfaction. Whenever possible, the You Go Girls™ will run outside during the fall term. When the weather isn’t suitable for running, participants will practice yoga and mindfulness techniques, learn about accomplished female athletes, and make (and eat) healthy snacks! It is recommended that participants have proper running shoes as well as layers for unpredictable weather.

Chorus, Orchestra, and World Percussion will perform for the Lower School community on Tuesday, December 11 at 9 a.m. in the Poley Auditorium.

• CHORUSWednesdays, 3:10-4:15 p.m. (begins 10/3) Grades 4-5The Lower School Chorus is open to interested students in grades 4 and 5. Students will explore their vocal potential as they learn correct breathing and singing techniques. We will sing in unison and then delve into 2-part arrangements, starting with rounds. No auditions are necessary, however, students will be asked to sing a few short scales so they can be placed in the correct section. Rehearsals will be right after school. Students will come directly to Debbie Stahl’s classroom after dismissal for a short break and a little snack before starting to sing.

• ORCHESTRATuesdays, 3:10-4:30 p.m. (begins 10/2) Kindergarten-Grade 5This ensemble, led by Music Department Head Taia Harlos, is open to all string, woodwind, brass and piano players. Interested students should speak with Taia Harlos before enrolling. Students must have played for at least a year, read music, and currently be taking private lessons in order to join the Orchestra.

• WORLD PERCUSSIONTuesdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. (begins 10/2) Grades 4-5The Lower School World Percussion program, under the direction of professional musician Shawn Hennessey, is a communal drumming experience that is both fun and educational for students, and for the GFS community as a whole. During each term, students in the fourth and fifth grades will be exposed to rhythms and techniques from Ghana, Cuba, Brazil and the Middle East, played on authentic drums. Djembes, Doumbeks, Congas, Surdos, and various bells and shakers are just some of the instruments that will be used. Specific activities will include polyrhythmic games, South Indian vocables, body percussion, drum language, and circle songs focusing on West African and Afro-Caribbean secular and spiritual songs. Singing while playing is encouraged, as is improvisation and dance. This program is sure to get hands grooving, blood pumping, and bodies jumping!Axé! Interested students should talk to their classroom music teachers (Debbie Stahl or Taia Harlos) before enrolling.

Note for Parents and Guardians: Although there are no fees to participate in these Music Ensembles, we ask that you please enroll your child through Active Network once you have received word from Debbie Stahl or Taia Harlos that your child is eligible to participate. This will enable us to maintain up-to-date attendance lists and to communicate with you as efficiently as possible.

Upon registering, Lower School parents will need to update dismissal information for their children. The confirmation email will include a link to a Change in Dismissal form. It is essential that parents fill out this form in order to inform the Lower School Office of all changes in dismissal and pick-up plans.

We wish for all students to be able to participate in programming offered by GFS. Financial assistance is available for qualifying families.
