After School Enrichment Program Winter 2016 After School Enrichment offers a variety of classes where students can explore current passions and learn about new ones. Classes are taught by Wildwood faculty and respected outside teachers and organizations. Enrichment classes meet once a week, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. There are a total of eight meetings per class. After School Enrichment Program Winter 2016

After School Enrichment offers a variety of classes where students can explore current passions and learn

about new ones. Classes are taught by Wildwood faculty and respected outside teachers and

organizations.

Enrichment classes meet once a week, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. There are a

Pick-up: Pick-up after class is promptly at 4:30 p.m., parents or guardians should meet children outside the

classroom. Children who are not picked up by 4:35 p.m. will go directly to After School, and parents will be

charged for a day of after care (half-rate charge if picked up within 60 minutes).

Emergencies or rainy days: If we must cancel an enrichment class, with less than 24 hours advance notice,

Wildwood will pay for your child to attend After School until 4:30 p.m. The instructor will schedule a make-

up day for the enrichment class and inform you via a phone call, email or memo.

Beginning Guitar Have you ever wanted to learn how to play a musical instrument? Want to learn how to play guitar and rock out? Join Shere Disraeli, Wildwood alum, as he teaches the basics of guitar. This class is designed for beginners and no experience is required. We will learn the anatomy of the guitar and learn the right technique from the start. We will also begin to learn songs that you can practice at home and play with your friends. Get the right start in playing music! Please bring your own guitar and amp if you have one. Mondays $295, all ages Location: Roxanne’s 3rd grade MAXIMUM enrollment: 4 students

Design in Wood Get together with local artist, Sylvia Schorn, to be creative and have fun! First, you will make a quick

sketch of the “Project of the Day,” which could be a car, a game, a robot, a treasure box, a 3D picture,

an animal, a tool box, a planter, a musical instrument, an airplane, or who knows what else comes to

your mind. To build your models you will use wood, hammers, nails, screws, screwdrivers, and a hand

drill. After finishing you will embellish your art with different materials. The combination of

woodworking and art encourages concentration, problem-solving skills, fine-motor coordination, and

stimulates creativity. Everyone will experience the joy of creative expression, become creative thinkers,

and develop confidence.

Gymnastics Flexibility! Balance! Coordination! Strength! Self-confidence! Put it all together, and what do you have? Each class features balance beams, bars, colorful incline mats, and roller mats, all to help you develop your gymnastics skills in a safe and fun atmosphere. Positive energy, exciting music and TLC will ensure motivation and success for everyone. Classes will allow you to progress at your own pace, starting from any level or age. Conrad Lujan is an experienced gymnast as well as coach for performance gymnastics. Mondays

Chess Lab Welcome to Chess Lab, a program designed in bringing both Chess and Science together in a manner

that is fun and educational. Joe Kim of Aces of Tomorrow, will lead each session that will be divided into

two segments; you will start by learning the ins and outs of chess, and will end class with an exciting

hands-on science experiment!

Performing Arts Party! Do you love to act, sing, dance, create, build, and play? Join Seth in the Performing Arts room to explore musical instruments, act out stories, build with blocks and fabrics, and play with the props and costumes. This cooking class with Melanie, 3rd grade teacher and Patti, Technology teacher, will be fun for any young Jedi Knights and Naboo princesses. On your journey young Jedis will encounter C-3PO pancakes, Obi-Wan Kabobs, Darth Malt, Anakin’s Apple Crisp, Padme Pad Thai, and much more! While enjoying delicious treats, students will design light sabers, create Star Wars placemats, and make fun Star Wars crafts. May the force be with you! Fun and Games on the Field

Come join Tahnee, Dolphin Pod teacher, and your friends for fun on the field. Play Fenway Park,

kickball, capture the flag, and lots of other field games. Yummy snacks are included.

Knitting Circle Sherry, Seal Pod teacher, and Roxanne, 3rd grade teacher, are back with another round of Knitting Circle. Come and join their Knitting Circle to learn the basics of knitting. They will provide you with needles and yarn. Or, if you are an experienced knitter and you want help so you can build on your knitting skills, they will be there to assist you. Project Runway Do you have a passion for fashion? Want to add flair to your wear? In this class you can explore fabrics and feathers, buttons and pleathers to design your own line. From sportswear to sleep wear, we will take on new design challenges and collaborate on your creations. Come take a walk down the red carpet with Gina, Performing Arts teacher and Kusum, Visual Arts teacher, and share your creations! All NEW projects will be offered! Yummy snacks are included! Sing-a-Long with Natalie Do you love to sing? Then come sing-a-long with Natalie, 2nd grade teacher! You will learn various singing techniques, choral harmonies, and how to turn your voice into a musical instrument. Bring your favorite songs and sing-a-long! Storybook Crafting

Do you love story time? Join Maria in the Library for fun filled afternoons of reading and crafting. We will be taking a literary journey together by reading a combination of both classic and contemporary storybooks. We will also be getting messy with a variety of art mediums as we craft away the afternoon. Healthy snacks provided! Tuesdays

Becky’s Art Studio From porcupine portraits to arctic landscapes, from embroidery to liquid watercolor, from building treasure boxes to making silly putty, we will do it all! Whether you're a veteran art lover who's already well familiar with the flow of Sumi ink, or you're still less than comfortable drawing stick figures, the Wildwood art studio is the place to be on Wednesday afternoons. Do You Believe in Magic? Does Magic exist? Most would say “no,” but they would be absolutely wrong. Real magic is science and technology that one does not understand. Wildwood friend and professional magician, Jonathan Castile, performed his first magic show in third grade and has performed ever since in many venues throughout California. He is now here to teach you the tricks of magic! The goal of this class is not merely to teach magic tricks, but to learn how to develop one's own magic; magic limited only by your imagination. You will learn how to learn magic, which is the greatest challenge! Wednesdays $295, all ages Location: Library Minimum required enrollment: 6 students

Drum Class Have you ever wanted to rock the beats? Join Shere Disraeli, Wildwood alum, and learn how to develop rhythm, skills, and feel on the drums. You will have the opportunity to play a full drum set and hand drums in drum circles. Learn how to listen deeply and rock the beat! Help understand what makes people dance and how rhythm works. Learn to develop skills and learn to listen while playing with each other.

Hip Hop Rox Let’s get up and dance! Come join Miss Roxanne’s (NOT 3rd grade teacher) hip-hop class for a high-energy hour of exercise and fun! Students of all ages and levels are welcome to join. This class includes a combination of warm-up activities, a breakdown of all the coolest dance moves, an introduction to choreography, and of course Freeze Dance! Programming: Scratch by Digital Dragon We approach programming from multiple disciplines to make understanding the concepts easier, enjoy working with code and finding your tech passion. We offer full year exposure composed of programming in Scratch, programming physical games, and robotics. This session we’re offering a Scratch programming class that focuses on developing computer literacy through MIT’s engaging, easy-to-use, drag-and-drop programming language. From brainstorming to play-testing, you will learn to draw on the digital canvas, design your own characters, create games and animations, and make a music video. America Girl Cooking with Danielle Join Danielle, Whale pod teacher, in the Commons kitchen to recreate recipes from the American Girl

cookbook series. We'll adapt foods from across the centuries: Samantha's tea sandwiches, Kaya's finger cakes, Julie's fondue and Addy's pound cake. Come prepared to mix, knead, stir, and taste! Thursdays $295, all ages Location: Commons Kitchen Minimum required enrolment: 6 students

Basketball Kobe, LeBron, and Lisa Leslie all started somewhere. Join Hasan, P.E. teacher, to learn how to play basketball. This course will teach you the fundamentals, including passing, shooting, and dribbling techniques. You’ll also work on sportsmanship skills and teamwork. This class is a slam-dunk, so don't miss out on the fun! Thursdays $250, all ages Location: Big Yard Minimum required enrollment: 10 students

Ceramics Come play in the mud! Taught by Wildwood parent, teacher and Mud Puppies director, Susan Grieder, this class offers an introduction to the wonderful world of clay for all! Various techniques of ceramic hand building will be used to create objects you can take home and use! Concepts of line, form, texture and color will be explored while you shape, paint, and glaze your creations using non-toxic, food-safe materials. “Messy” clothes or an apron should be worn (or brought to school to change into) on the day of class. Felting Friends Come spend the afternoon with Sarah, 2nd grade teacher, and create your own cute, cuddly, cozy, wool pets! You will sculpt and needle-poke away until you've created the cutest little pet you've ever seen. You will be able to keep all your own materials, including the foam board and your own needle so you can continue creating your own little creatures at home. No previous experience necessary. Lego Adventures Spend the afternoon with Ryan, 3rd grade teacher, and enjoy the opportunity to build various Lego kits and free-build. Ryan, 3rd grade teacher, will guide you as you work in groups or independently to create your project while using cooperative learning strategies and following sets of written/illustrated directions. Thursdays $295, all ages Location: Carolyn’s 3rd grade MAXIMUM enrollment: 12 students

Minecraft, Penguins, Kidzui…Oh My! A Virtual World of Fun! Explore virtual worlds for kids guided by Melanie, 3rd grade teacher, and Patti, Technology teacher, in a safe and creative environment. You will engage in a variety of fun activities as a Penguin avatar in Club Penguin, explore the web just for kids with KIDZUI, and construct your own virtual world in Minecraft. Chat and play games with friends in class and learn how to safely navigate in each virtual world. Specific goals, such as building textured cube constructions, scavenger hunts or creating a personal avatar will be given to each player to accomplish before the end of class. Shakespeare Calling all 4th and 5th Grade Shakespeare lovers! Join Gina, performing Arts teacher, for an all-new version of this creative and exciting theatrical experience, where a variety of Shakespeare’s most famous works are explored, modernized, acted out, and made into a unique and original play!
