Economic and Weather Forecasts at the Pacific Northwest Farm ForumMore convenient than ever, the Pacific Northwest Farm Forum will be held all

three days of this year’s Spokane Ag Expo, February 2-4, 2016 inside the newly expanded Spokane Convention Center Complex. The largest farm machinery show in the Inland Northwest will host a plethora of exhibitors and conduct over 30 edu-cational seminars and forums relating to agribusiness from large-scale operations to small acreage farms and ranches. Exhibitors will range from large farm equipment manufacturers and service providers, to businesses catering to small acreage and part-time farmers who hold down other jobs while also running their family farms. Spokane Ag Expo has been bringing agri-businesses and farmers together for 39 years.

On Tuesday, February 2, 9am-11am, Dr. Art Douglas will be giving his famous “2016 Forecast for Weather Conditions in the Northwest” along with “The Impact of Climate Change”. Dr. Art Douglas is a Professor Emeritus, Atmospheric Sci-ence Department from Creighton University. On Wednes-day, February 3, 9-10:30am, Professor Randy Fortenbery, the Thomas B. Mick Endowed Chair in the WSU School of Eco-nomic Sciences, will be discussing the “Agriculture Economic Forecast”.

Pacific NW Farm Forum is also offering over 30 educa-tional seminars scheduled to include topics relating to farm tax planning, agricultural risk and planning strategies, forest/range land fire recovery, bookkeeping, water sup-plies, estate planning, planting, budgets, crop land values and much more. View all the seminar topics and sched-uled times by going online to Spokane Ag Expo’s website at www.AgShow.org or checking the schedule in this supplement. All seminars and speaker events will be presented in the vari-ous meeting rooms.

Crop Insurance Deadlines Near in Idaho, Oregon and WashingtonProducers Need to Make Insurance Decisions Soon

Risk Management Agency (RMA) reminds producers that the final date to apply for Whole-Farm Revenue Protec-tion and insurance coverage on all other spring crops (except wheat in counties with fall and spring planted types) is March 15.The final date to apply for cover-age on spring planted onions in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, and cabbage in Oregon and Washington is February 1. Current policyholders who wish to make changes to their existing coverage also have until the sales closing date to do so. Crop insurance provides pro-tection against a loss in production due to natural perils, such as drought or excessive moisture.

RMA changed the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection policy to include improvements for beginning farmers and ranchers, livestock producers, and producers whose operations are expanding. More beginning farmers and ranchers can participate in the program because RMA now requires only three historical years and farming records from the past year. Any beginning farmer and rancher may qualify by using a former farm operator’s federal farm tax records if they assume at least 90 per-cent of the farm operation. Producers can now insure up to $1 million worth of animals and animal products. RMA also increased the cap on historical revenue for expanding operations to 35 percent so growing farms can better cover their growth in the insurance guarantee.

Producers are encouraged to visit their crop insur-ance agent soon to learn specific details for the 2016 crop year. Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. A list of crop in-surance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at the RMA Agent Locator. Producers can use the RMA Cost Estimator to get a premium amount estimate of their insurance needs online. Learn more about crop insurance and the modern farm safety net at www.rma.usda.gov

The Washington AgForestry Leadership Program is an 18-month leadership development program consisting of 14 comprehensive seminars on topics important to Washington State’s natural resource industries and rural communities. We are a leadership development organization dedicated to advancing the natural resource industries through enhanced understanding, education and empowerment of future leaders. Why apply?• Improve your communication. Learn to work with decision makers. Practice dialogue

with the media. Acquire the skills and tools to effectively communicate in your organization and community.

• Study and broaden your knowledge on the issues that are important to your industry: water allocation and quality, growth management, the Endangered Species Act, labor, conservation, the Columbia River system, forest and fish management, and more. You will experience different cultures, types of governments and trade regulations on an international educational seminar. Experience the “bigger picture.”

• Obtain insight into how communities work together successfully. Learn about the criminal justice system, poverty, social programs and issues which affect our state. AgForestry graduates are providing leadership from the grassroots up, serving in local, state and federal government and NGO’s. Others are taking the lead as creative entrepreneurs, creating new systems of marketing and producing, adding economic value or developing new markets domestically and overseas. Realize that leadership is needed in every part of society.

• Meet and build relationships with a wide range of individuals who are leaders from other communities, regulators, and from other commodity groups. There is value in finding common ground and building solutions together. Hear their successes and learn from their challenges.

• Learn techniques for creating a vision for yourself, your business or community and make the plan to achieve it. You will become more action-oriented, increasing your critical thinking and solution seeking skills.

Whole Wheat Oat BreadUtilize our region’s bounty by baking with plenty of oats and whole wheat! This delicious bread is a staple for any home’s pantry and is essential for the per-fect turkey sandwich.

Directions

1. Warm the milk in a small saucepan to no more than 100 degrees F (40 degrees C). Sprinkle the yeast overtop and let stand until the yeast softens and begins to form a creamy foam, about 5 minutes; stir in the sugar.

2. Whisk the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, oatmeal, and salt together in a mixing bowl. Make a well in the center and pour the milk mixture into the

well. Stir until the dough has pulled together. Turn the dough out onto a lightly-floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.

3. Lightly oil a large bowl. Place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a light cloth and let rise in a warm place (80 to 95 degrees F (27 to 35 degrees C)) until doubled in volume, about 45 minutes.

4. Grease 2 8x4-inch loaf pans. Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly-floured surface. Use a knife to divide the dough into two equal pieces - don’t tear it. Shape into dough rounds and let rest for 10 minutes. Form the dough into loaves and place into the prepared pans. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in volume, about 40 minutes.

5. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F.

6. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown and the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in the pans for 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Ingredients

2 cups whole milk

1 (.25 ounce) package ac-tive dry yeast

1-1/2 Tbsp white sugar

2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour

2 cups all-purpose flour, or as needed

1/2 cup oatmeal

YouTube Sensations: The Peterson Farm BrosTruly dedicated to the agriculture lifestyle, the Peterson Farm Bros are an exciting new addition to this year’s Ag Expo lineup! Don’t miss their performance on Wednes-day, February 3 at 9am.

The Peterson Farm Bros are made up of Greg (25), Na-than (22), Kendal (19), and honorary “bro” Laura (15) Peterson. We are siblings who farm together with our parents near Assaria, KS. We produce entertaining and educational videos on our YouTube channel (ThePeter-sonFarmBros) and post continuous farming and video updates to our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). Ever since we began producing content, we have continued to realize a need to inform people about what we do in farming and in agriculture as a whole. There are many misconceptions about modern day farmers and we feel it is our calling to help correct some of those misconceptions. Aside from our produc-tion on social media, we travel around the country to perform and speak on advocating for agriculture. We also blog about misunderstood topics in agriculture and open up our farm for tours. Through all of this we hope to educate the general public on where their food comes from and what a real Midwest family farm looks like!

Our farm is a 5th generation family farm located near Assaria, KS in the United States of America. Our Swed-ish ancestors homesteaded it in the 1800s and we still farm on the same land today. We primarily raise beef cattle in our backgrounding feedlot operation. We grow corn, alfalfa, and forage sorghum as feed for our cattle and we grow wheat, milo, and soybeans for cash crops. Our dad is the “boss” of the farm, but we brothers have plenty of input into the decisions that are made and the work that is done. We have a hired man named Terry, our dad’s cousin, who works on the farm when we are in school or gone on speaking trips. We have lived and worked on our farm with our family our entire lives, and enjoy hosting tours of our farm each summer. There are many videos on our YouTube channel that show what we do on the farm!

Our goal is for all 3 of us to be able to return home to the farm after college and farm together. That is easier said than done, as our farm with have to grow quite a bit to be able to support all of our families. If we are not able to farm together full-time, we are hopeful for other sce-narios where maybe 1 or 2 of us are only part time farm-ers. None of us desire to leave the farm completely! We don’t know how long we will keep making videos, but we do hope to stay on the agricultural advocacy front for the rest of our lives.
