No time to think. No time toreact. It takes about three-quar-ters of a second for a tractor torollover. Accounting for one in fivedeaths, tractor rollovers are theleading cause of farm-related fa-talities in Canada.

Equipping tractors with arollover prevention system orROPS and ensuring the operatorwears a seatbelt has beenproven to be 99 per cent effectivein preventing death or serious in-jury in the event of a tractorrollover. Do all of your tractorshave ROPS?

In2010, the campaign promoted“Plan” featuring safety walka-bouts and planning for safety.

The yearlong “Safety” cam-paign will be launched withCanadian Agricultural SafetyWeek (CASW), March 11 to 17.The Canadian Federation of Agri-culture (CFA) and CASA deliverCASW in partnership with FarmCredit Canada (FCC) and Agri-culture and Agri-Food Canadathrough Growing Forward, a fed-eral, provincial, territorial initia-tive.

“New tractors come with

ROPS installed but virtually allmakes and old models of tractorscan be retrofitted with ROPS,”says Marcel Hacault, CASA ex-ecutive director.

Male tractor operators aged 50and older account for the highestnumber of rollover fatalities, re-ports an article published in theJune issue of Chronic Diseasesand Injuries in Canada. The re-port says this is likely becausemany older operators use trac-tors that were made before man-ufacturers routinely installedROPS, thereby increasing theirlikelihood of a fatality during arollover.

“Having ROPS is only half ofthe equation,” explains Hacault.

“The operator must also be wear-ing a seatbelt to stay in the safearea and not be thrown in harm’sway.”

The most common cause of asideways rollover is driving tooclose to the edge of a ditch orsteep slope. Always drive at least1.5 metres away from the edge ofa ditch or steep slope.

Backwards rollovers usuallyoccur when pulling-out or towingmachines, dragging logs or im-plements, or removing stumps ortrees. To avoid backwardsrollovers, never hitch a tow chainabove the draw bar of the tractor.

When it comes to farm safety,‘use ROPS and wear a seatbelt’are words to live by.

I Have a Role is geared to in-crease awareness of the manydifferent roles that Albertans canadopt to promote farm safety. Thelaunch of this campaign is set tocoincide with Canadian Agricul-tural Safety Week which runsMarch 11 to 17, 2012.

“I Have a Role will place anemphasis on responsibilities inagricultural safety, whether it’sthe role of a parent, farm owner,worker, equipment dealer ormember of a community group,”says Kenda Lubeck, farm safetycoordinator, Alberta Agricultureand Rural Development, GrandePrairie. “It’s important for rural Al-bertans to recognize their part inpromoting and enhancing safetyin agriculture. Each position isvital, whether it’s leading by ex-ample, creating a safety programor discussing safety with lovedones.”

Farm-related injuries anddeaths are preventable. However,Alberta regularly has an averageof 17 farm-related fatalities peryear.

“It’s vital that those living andworking in the agriculture indus-try recognize and reduce the haz-ards involved in farming,” saysLubeck. “One of the biggest rolesis encouraging and enabling farmowners and workers to adopt safework practices through promotingfarm safety.”

Farm safety can be promotedacross Alberta in a variety ofways.

“Those involved in clubs andorganizations can enhance farmsafety in their communitiesthrough education such as a firstaid program, WHMIS or equip-ment operation training course,”explains Lubeck.

“Another avenue is for clubssuch as 4-H to have regular dis-

cussion around safety topicssuch as livestock handling,

ATV operation or personal pro-tective equipment. A farm safetyposter contest or an organizedfarm safety area at a local ag fairor similar event is a great way topromote farm safety to childrenand families. On the farm, indi-viduals can take on many rolesfrom developing a safety plan tohaving safety discussions aroundthe kitchen table”

A twine ribbon (twibbon), sim-ilar to the pink breast cancerribbon is the symbol for the IHave a Role campaign.

“The ribbon represents eachindividual’s unique role in pro-moting farm safety,” says Lubeck.“The twibbon has a differentmeaning to anyone who wears it.It can be made at home by tyinga loop in a section of sisal or jutetwine and using a safety pin tosecure it to a piece of clothing.”

The I Have a Role campaign isdesigned to encourage conversa-tion among Albertans and put thewords “farm safety” into action.

“Discussion inevitably empha-sizes safe work practices andproper risk management,” addsLubeck. “Keeping safety top ofmind is vital to minimize risks.”

The Alberta Farm Safety Pro-gram has resources available toincrease awareness and promotefarm safety in rural communities.As well, the newly developedSafeThink Agriculture is being de-livered across Alberta to educatefarm owners and workers on safethinking strategies that can beapplied to any task.
