Various government and nongovernment organizations observed World Elder Abuse

Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2016 by organizing different campaign activities in Nepal.

a) Workshop Conducted

National Senior Citizen's Federation in collaboration with Ministry of Women,

Children and Social Welfare organized a workshop on the occasion of WEAAD 2016 in

Kathmandu. The program was organized with the major theme of “Leaving No One

Behind”. The representatives from various government and nongovernment

organizations working in the issue of ageing population participated in the workshop.

The Chief Guest of the program, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Women,

Children and Social Welfare, CP Mainali, said that the ideals and experience of senior

citizens must be honored. Ms. Pramila Bajracharya Thapa, Chairperson of Hope

Hermitage Nepal presented slides on Elder Abuse in Nepal with support of Ageing

Nepal in the event.

b) Awareness Pamphlets Produced and Distributed

Ageing Nepal in partnership with five Lions Clubs of Nepal produced and distributed

awareness pamphlets in major city centers of Kathmandu. The five Lions Clubs were:

Lions Club of Kathmandu Sunakhari, Lions Club of Kathmandu Margdarshan, Lions

Club of Kathmandu Mithila City, Lions Club of Kathmandu Makhamali Vatika and

Lions Club of Kathmandu Matribhumi. Glimpses of the program:

c) ADA on Right Campaign Organized

Ageing Nepal in partnership with HelpAge International Nepal completed the

following activities as part of Age Demand Action (ADA) on right on the occasion of

WEAAD 2016.

Two articles in national dailies in Nepali language

Radio talk show

d) Rally and Poem Recitation Competition

Women for Human Rights, Single Women Group with support from HelpAge

International Nepal organized a rally and a poem recitation competition in Bhaktapur

district to mark the WEAAD. Children drew pictures depicting various kinds of abuses

faced by senior citizens. Similarly, senior citizens shared their problems through

poems. Three students who made the best pictures were awarded while senior

citizens reciting best poems were given letter of appreciation.

OAH for Helpless

Gorkhapatra Daily

Kathmandu, June 7, 2016

Construction of thirty buildings for Old Age Home (OAH) has been completed in

Lapsephedi, Kathmandu. This place is free from pollution, delightful and lies in base

of Manichut Mountain. OAH will provide service to helpless and destitute elderly.

Overjoyed Elderly Gorkhapatra Daily Humla, Solukhumbhu and Parsa, June 2/ June 24, 2016 The news published on different dates stated the happiness of Senior citizens residing Humla, Solukhumbhu and Parsa districts due to the increment of Old Age Allowance from earlier Rs. 1000 to Rs. 2000 per month. The increment was announced by Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel in budget speech for the fiscal year 2016/2017.

Poetry Recitation Program Held

Nobel Sakos Sahitya Pratisthan in partnership with Ageing Nepal organized a poetry

reciting competition on the issues of senior citizens in Kathmandu. Three winners of

the competition were provided certificate with cash prize.

Nepal Health Service Strategies Developed

Ageing Nepal

Kathmandu, June 22, 2016

HelpAge International Nepal, Ageing Nepal and Handicap International participated

in stakeholders meeting for Nepal Health Service Strategies organized by Ministry of

Health in Primary Health Care Revitalization Division (PHCRD) on 22 June 2016. These

three organizations gave inputs to develop Five Years Implementation Plan (2015-

2020) on health of senior citizens, people with disability, ultra poor and poor in

coordination of HelpAge International Nepal.

Elderly in Biodiversity Conservation

Ageing Nepal

Kathmandu, June 24, 2016

National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) and Ageing Nepal signed

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to run a first pilot project on “Involvement of

Senior Citizens in Biodiversity Conservation”. Under this project, a number of

activities will be conducted to encourage and motivate senior citizens in biodiversity

conservation. The list of program is:

1) Guided tour to Central Zoo, Jawalakhel

2) Guided tour to Shivapuri National Park

3) Elderly group will be formed for the biodiversity conservation.

4) Summary Video will be released at the end of the campaign.

5) Posting of slogans, posters and campaign activities in social media (Face book

and Twitter)

Helpless Elderly

This news depicts woes of senior citizens who have lost their children due to the fire

caught in wood store at Mumbai. Uttam Loniya, 60, is facing a hard time after he lost

his two sons, who are breadwinners of his family. Similarly, the fire took one son of

septuagenarian Shyam Dev Aahir and left his youngest son injured. Now, Mr. Aahir is

in debt of more than Rs 100000 for the treatment of his youngest son. Though the

government of Nepal and India has promised for relief amount, the victim’s families

haven’t received anything yet.

Elderly Women Denied Justice

Khotang, June 22, 2016

An elderly woman, 72, who was meted out mental and physical torture on the

charge of practicing black magic, complained that she had been denied justice and

right to life. Dhanjung Rai and his wife Tara of Banjhechyandanda VDC-1, Khotang

has thrashed the women a month ago. An eyewitness said that Rai couple had

mercilessly thrashed the women and threatened to kill her. The victim received deep

cuts on her hand. Two days after the incident, the victim had lodged a case but the

police showed apathy.
