“Join us for a great cause… a center for senior citizens…it’s like helping yourself”Today, Berks Encore’s six centers are

able to serve a broad portion of the county, reaching thousands of seniors.

But in the early years of the Berks County Senior Citizens Council, a permanent place to call come was not a reality. Headquartered fi rst in the basement of the Berkshire Hotel in Reading and later in a larger hotel on Penn Street, the agency and its in-creasing membership base were quickly outgrowing all available facilities. The lack of adequate space limited the agency’s programming and services for the county’s elderly population.

By 1969, the county’s senior popula-tion was estimated at 33,000 people. About 2,200 seniors from 42 organized groups were members of BCSC. The members of BCSC were active in arts and crafts, entertainment, and a vari-ety of other activities, but were now fl ourishing in the realm of senior ser-vices. Services like Meals on Wheels had begun that year, and programs like the “Ring-A-Day” daily phone check-in program were already staples of the organization. A group of such activity and aims was in need of a bigger, permanent senior center in the city of Reading. The center would be the fi rst of its kind in the state of Pennsylvania.

Plans were drawn up in 1969, documenting the various rooms of a space on 9th Street between Court and Washington Streets: a medical clinic to assist seniors on housing, health, legal, and fi nan-cial problems; recreational facilities that include a reading and music library; a complete kitchen; craft, hobby, and art rooms; and a large multipur-pose room to be used for special programs and social gatherings. The location was park-like and convenient to the public transportation, elderly housing, churches, and shopping boasted by down-

town Reading. But the cost of building such a center was daunt-

ing, and the agency would need to raise $400,000 in order to receive a matching grant. This was no small fundraising task, especially for an organiza-tion that was relatively new. The agency conser-vatively predicted the center would open within a decade, and set to work on a variety of events and fundraising drives to help the center become a reality. The agency’s Christmas Bazaar became a staple of the agency’s programming, with its active arts and crafts group leading the way. Membership drives, bake sales, and other events chipped away at the cost of the center. Appeals fl ew out the door, and local media championed the BCSC’s goals: “All of Berks County Will Benefi t from the New

Dear Reader —

The cooler October temperatures are a reminder that we’re now nearing the last months of 2015, and along with that, our 50th year. I’m feeling a bit nostalgic and thought I’d share some of my favorite archive fi nds here at Berks Encore—all the ways in which seniors made news in the early days of our agency.

Peppered throughout our archives are an amazing collection of news clippings—pictures, articles, ads—that refl ect the tireless work and amazing energy of the county’s seniors. From headlines like “Senior Citizens

Unit to Organize” to “New Club Planned for Senior Citizens” to “Senior Citizens Plan Fundraising Bazaar,” I again am reminded how lucky our agency and our community is that we have such motivated older adults. Throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s, the local media carefully documented the feverish activity of seniors organizing, being educated and entertained, and helping others.

I love this image from 1965, which shows Mrs. Mary Denman enthusiastically addressing her fellow seniors and a County Commissioner regarding the need for seniors to be supported and protected. This advocacy was central to the formation of our agency, and demonstrates how hard seniors of the 1960s worked to make agencies like the Senior Citizens Council a reality.

By 1968, the Senior Citizens Council was a reality, and a center was already providing a place for seniors to have fun, make friends, and stay active. A choice quote from Mrs. Miriam M. Stein—“I wish I could get everybody to become senior”—makes me smile. How amazing Mrs. Stein echoed a tagline that would come nearly 40 years later—“Applauding Life After 50.”

hundreds of older Berks Countians enter the doors of our six countywide centers. Berks Encore centers featured a variety of activities, including exercise classes, art classes, lunch, bingo, health fairs, and other games, and entertainment. Berks Encore centers strive to help seniors feel better coming out of the center than they did going on. While our Open House is a special

event, Berks Encore centers are always “open”: centers are open on weekdays, there is no membership fee to attend, and many events are free of charge.

Senior Citizens Center.” The fundraising efforts culminated with a two-day event

called the Spirit of the 60’s. A play on words of both the decade and the 60s age group, the event celebrated the vibrant seniors of the county, treating both the seniors to two days of fun, and the rest of the community to a large community event. The Spirit of the 60’s took place on September 26 and 27, 1969, at three Boscov’s locations: North, East, and West. An art auction of original works of well-known artists, food stands, a craft bou-tique shop, a fashion show, skits, and musical entertainment—among amyn other activities—were marketed to the entire community. Seniors were treated to special giveaways, including a chance to win an all-expense paid second honeymoon week-end in Niagara Falls, NY, awarded to the couple attending the event who had been married the longest.

In the days preceding the event, Outstanding Senior Citizens were featured in the Reading Eagle. Musicians, physicians, edu-cators, and others were featured with photos and short biog-raphy, a testament to the talented and driven individuals who made the BCSC a success so early in its agency life. The Spirit of the 60’s raised $5,000 and was repeated the next year with an even bigger lineup of activities: kids’ activities, like a fi sh pond and rides, a merchandise auction, and more. The Spirit of the 60’s Part II, as it was called, raised over $7,000 as the BCSC marched towards its fundraising goal. By Spirit of the 60’s Part III in 1971, a wide variety of public offi cials, entertainers, and media personalities worked diligently to spread the word and help the agency achieve its fundraising goal.

The three Spirit of the 60’s events raised about $25,000 for the agency’s building fund. Noted then-agency Executive Director, Frank Ruch, “the Center will provide the facilities and space aimed toward making the Senior Citizens socially and mentally secure.” By 1972, the agency had raised $200,000, which met the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Devel-opment’s requirements for a $400,000 building grant, and the Reading Eagle printed an op-ed noting, “When we consider that longevity is increasing in the United States, expanding the

elderly popula-tion, and that Berks has a higher percentage of the aged than the nation as a whole, it becomes even more imperative that recreational facilities be expanded for our senior citizens.”

In August of 1975, the dream became a reality, far ahead of original projections: the agency broke ground on its new building, which remains today a fi xture for seniors for services, programming, and entertainment. As the agency embarks on its next 50 years of service to the commu-nity, it will certainly hope to take its inspiration from the Spirit of the 60’s and the seniors that paved the way for the agency’s current offerings.

Angela Lattanzio just began her board term this year, but has been heavily involved in Berks Encore for years. Vice President and Bank Manager of Customers Bank’s Wyomissing offi ce, Lattanzio came to Berks County in 1993, and has years of experience with the agency’s Senior Expo. “In the past,

Customers Bank has sponsored and attended Senior Expo,” she explains. “I ran our Senior Expo booth, and made lots of connections onsite.” Angela was also drawn to the organization by President/CEO LuAnn Oatman. “LuAnn is great, and has great energy”

For Angela, involvement with Berks Encore is important on a personal level. “It’s a good cause, and I enjoy helping people. We can have fun at this organization, but I think there’s so much to learn from seniors, just by listening to their stories: how hard they’ve worked, their life experience—it’s all so interesting to learn about.”

Berks Encore’s wide variety of services and broad reach provide ample opportunities for board members to get involved

in the agency. “Everybody has someone that has a need [for Berks Encore’s services],” says Angela, “And I’m happy to help wherever is needed—whether it’s by spreading the word or sharing stories, or educating people.”

Angela’s board service philosophy follows her professional philosophy. “I’m about relationships and helping people,” she explains. “Everyone at Berks Encore is so compassionate, and it’s something I like being a part of.”

Angela is involved with other nonprofi ts, and has worked with the Olivet Boys & Girls Club Steak & Burger Dinner Committee for several years. “I don’t want to join a nonprofi t board just to join—I join to help,” she states. “I’m known for thinking outside the box, and I’m excited to think more about Berks Encore’s future events and programs, and how to get the word out to people.”

As a banking professional, Angela’s specialties include Commercial and Consumer Lending, Business to Business Sales, and Superior Customer Service Standards. She is a graduate of Wellsboro Senior High School and attended Lackawanna Junior College. She is also a top graduate of the Bell Leadership Advance Achievement Leadership Program (AALP), and is a registered member of the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS).

If you’ve ever wondered about the labor that goes into the production of your Berks Encore News each month, this installment of the Volunter Spotlight features one individual who helps us make this publication happen.

Nick Santarelli, 22, began volunteering at Berks Encore’s

Reading Center in March in the Development & Marketing Departments and typically comes to the offi ce two afternoons per week. Nick’s enthusiasm and aptitude for various computer-related tasks has been a tremendous benefi t to Berks Encore. Since he began volunteering, Nick has typed various articles for Berks Encore News in addition to various forms and documents so that they can be added to Berks Encore servers.

But Nick’s service to Berks Encore includes more than just word processing. Nick has proven to be a valuable resource for data entry into the agency’s database of donors and members. Whether he’s updating addresses, scanning registrations, or updating constituent information, Nick’s diligence and digital know-how helps the agency work through a variety of paperwork.

In addition to assisting the Deve lopment & Marketing department, Nick also works with the Meals on Wheels program. From counting and sorting forms for various centers and Meals on Wheels recipients to data entry, Nick has a wide infl uence at the Reading offi ce. PROTECTING SENIORS FROM PHONE SCAMSOne of the pieces of legislation that will be considered this fall

by the Senate is House Bill 271 that is intended to increase cooperation between state agen-

cies, in order to improve protection for senior citizens in cases of unwanted telephone calls which lead to fi nancial exploitation, a fast-growing form of abuse of seniors and adults with disabilities.

The legislation calls for the state Offi ce of the Attorney General to have ongoing communication with the Department of Aging in order to ensure that consumers who are 60 years old or older have access to information regarding the prevention of potential patterns of fi nancial exploitation. Through that cooperation, local Area Agencies on Aging could identify, or possibly observe, potential patterns of fi nancial exploitation, such as IRS scams and sweepstakes fraud. Under current law, the attorney general’s offi ce only reports detailed investigations and enforcement actions during the preceding fi scal year to the General Assembly.

The Offi ce of Attorney General recently issued a warning that criminals are increasingly using sophisticated technology to target unsuspecting consumers. These “imposter” scams come through telephones and emails. These scam artists use software to mask information to show where the emails are coming from. They also use phone technology to thwart Caller ID. Many of the scammers are based outside the country. With this phone technology, the scammers can fake that their calls are originat-ing locally or from within the United States.

The Offi ce of Attorney General cautions that these con art-ists may seem legitimate by referencing a consumer’s personal information that is not publicly available. Sometimes this information may have been stolen from companies which suf-fered data breaches. This information may include the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security Number and/or information about the consumer’s family members. The callers sometime impersonate the local police, the department of motor vehicles and the IRS “spoofi ng” the Caller ID to appear legitimate. The caller may capitalize on the false impression caused by these things to pressure consumers to take action. Many victims have

reported that these scam callers have been particularly aggres-sive and persistent, scaring them about imminent arrest or other dire consequences.

Consumers can take the following steps to avoid becoming a victim of phone scams:

• Never give out personal or fi nancial information over the phone, especially if you receive an unsolicited telephone call from a stranger.

• Never wire money or purchase green dot-type prepaid cash or debit cards in response to a telephone appeal, whether it is from a stranger or someone who claims to know you or an organization you may be familiar with.

• Never let emotion or fear overcome your common sense. If you get a call from someone claiming to be a government agency or law enforcement, slow down and verify everything. Do not be pressured to take action. You can always hang up and call the agency directly to verify.

For more information or to report any scam, I encourage you to contact the PA Offi ce of Attorney General, Bureau of Con-sumer Protection at 1-800-441-2555. You should also report any suspected scam calls or emails to local law enforcement. Police then have the information to warn local residents to be on the lookout for these scams.

United Way of Berks County’s 2015 Loaned Campaign Specialists (LCSs) provided a huge boost to the Reading Center’s Meals On Wheels operations on September 2, when they packed and delivered meals to homebound

seniors in Reading. The LCSs represent a cross-section of local businesses. LCSs toured the Reading Center, learned more about the agency, and participated in a variety of aging simulation activities that showed the

debilitating effects aging has on a person’s body. Thank you to the United Way of Berks County’s LCSs for

joining us and lending a hand!

Managing Concerns About Falling

Berks Encore will be offering two Matter of Balance classes beginning in October. These eight-week classes cover a wide range of fall-risk management skills as well as simple exercises that can help to strengthen muscles and improve balance. Since last February, these evidence-based classes have been taught in conjunction with Reading Hospital Trauma Center and now have over 120 “graduates” who have completed the course. MEDICARE ANNUAL ENROLLMENT – What You Need to Know

Medicare Open Enrollment is almost here, and it’s time to check what your plan will cover in 2016. Changes like new medications or a new medical condition could mean your current Medicare plan won’t meet your needs.1. Your Deadline – Part D and Medicare

Advantage plan members can switch plans between October 15 and December 7. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan and want to return to Original Medicare and a stand-alone Part D plan, you can do so from January 1 to February 15, 2016.

2. Your Changes – If you’ve changed your medications, if your budget has changed, or if you were diagnosed with a new medical condition, your current Medicare plan may no longer meet your needs.

3. Your Plan’s Changes – Plans come and go, so fi rst and foremost, ensure that your plan will be off ered next year. If not, it’s time to search for a replacement. If it is, check to see what the plan covers. Insurers will send you

an annual notice of changes that tells you what’s new, including: a. What you will pay in monthly premiums and annual deductibles;b. What you will pay for doctor visits;c. If your drugs will be covered and what your out of pocket cost will be;d. If your doctors will continue to accept your plan;e. Which extra benefi ts will be covered, if any.

4. Your Research – If you need or want to switch your plan, research is key. Never pick a plan simply because a friend, neighbor, or sales agent tells you it’s great. Tools on www.Medicare.gov allow you to enter your drugs and preferred pharmacy, and will tell you what plans work for you. You can compare costs and enroll directly from the website.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the color pink indicating breast cancer awareness. Pink can be seen on ribbons, clothing lines, or a variety of retail items pro-moting breast cancer awareness—even the NFL has joined in with the players wearing pink. In 1985, the American Cancer Society teamed with Imperial Chemical Industries, now part of Astra Zeneca, to spread the word about breast cancer aware-ness, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month began. Thirty years later the goal is the same, to continue to spread the word about prevention, identifi cation, and early treatment of breast cancer to save lives. The success of this campaign has contributed to improved survival rates for breast cancer patients.

Breast cancer is the second leading cancer that women devel-op, after skin cancer. Speaking in statistics, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Men can also develop breast cancer, with the risks lower for men than women: approximately one in 1,000 men will develop breast cancer in his lifetime. Early identifi cation and treatment of breast cancer have had an excellent impact on survival rates for breast cancer patients. Knowing how breast cancer may be identifi ed early is important for all to continue to spread the word and help to save a life.

Early identifi cation of breast cancer is when the cancer is detected before it has had the opportunity to spread beyond the breast. This improves the odds of successful treatment of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society has reported the success rate with early detection and treatment is near 100 percent. Breast cancer that has not spread outside of the breast may also be referred to as localized. Breast cancer becomes more diffi cult to treat when it has moved outside of the breast tissue, which is known as metastasis. Research in the area of breast cancer treatment has greatly improved treatment therapies for both localized and metastatic breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s recommendation on early identifi cation includes yearly mammograms for women begin-ning at age 40. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that can be compared to prior mammograms to identify changes in the breast tissue to screen for breast cancer. Mammography is one of the best ways to identify breast cancer early; possibly even before a woman performing a breast self exam would identify a lump. For some women at higher risk of developing breast cancer, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is used in addition to a mammogram. Your healthcare provider will determine if you need an MRI.

Risk factors for breast cancer fall into two categories, non-modifi able and modifi able. Non-modifi able risk factors are not able to be changed. These include increased age, genetics or heredity, and family history of breast cancer. These factors assist healthcare providers in making decisions about what is the right screening for each person and how often a mammogram or MRI should be performed. The health care provider should be made aware at regular appointments if your medical or family history has changed. Modifi able risk factors are the ones that can be changed. These include taking hormone replacement therapy, overuse of alcohol use, being an unhealthy weight, poor diet,

lack of physical activity, and smoking. This is where a differ-ence can be made! Talk to your healthcare provider to work on an action plan to get healthier and reduce your risk of breast cancer.

Resources for more information on breast cancer include the American Cancer Society, available at 800-227-2345 or online at cancer.org. The National Cancer Institute, at the National Institutes of Health, is a resource provided by the govern-ment and is available online at cancer.gov. The Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks is another local resource and can be reached at 610-478-1447. Additional resources are available through the local hospitals. Berks VNA, at 610-378-0481, is also here to assist the community and can help with home health and private duty care needs.

Remember to discuss your risk of breast cancer with your healthcare provider and keep your appointments for your screenings like mammograms and MRIs. These screenings are saving lives as the American Cancer Society reports in 2014 there were 14.5 million breast cancer survivors. Discuss any changes in your or a family member’s health history at your next appointment. If you notice any changes in your breasts includ-ing a lump, changes in size or shape, or fl uid leaking, call your healthcare professional without delay. Finally, spread the word on breast cancer awareness and prevention with those you care about to save a life.

For the last 50 years, Berks Encore has provided services that allow our aging population to achieve a better quality of life. Our services are built on a foundation of solid relation-ships between Berks Encore and our program participants, volunteers, vendors, and

donors. Everyone within our agency takes that responsibility very seriously.

Dale Carnegie once said, “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.” At Berks Encore we are focused on you and how we can better serve you. When it comes to fundraising, that principle remains the same. We are interested in how you want to invest your time, tal-ents, and treasures to give back to those in your community who need it the most.

WHAT WE ACHIEVE TOGETHER

Thanks to your donations, Berks Encore staff and volunteers were able to build relationships that provided a variety of ser-vices and programs to Berks County’s older adults, their families and caregivers in 2014. The following is a snapshot of what we accomplished with your help:• Berks Encore’s staff and volunteers met with 1,534

individuals during the Medicare Open Enrollment period, saving those who changed plans a total of $357,700, an average savings of $828 a year.

• 1,000 people attended Medicare education seminars.

• 1,557 volunteers contributed nearly 67,000 hours of volunteer service, an increase of almost 6,000 hours over the previous year. The total value of volunteer time to Berks Encore equals $1,544,410, based on the Independent Sector’s value of $23.07 per hour.

• A total of 161,853 meals were delivered through the Meals on Wheels program by 1,557 volunteers. Additionally, 32,806 noontime meals were served at Berks Encore’s six centers.

I want to thank you, our fi nancial and volunteer supporters, for being interested in Berks Encore and allowing us to build a trusting relationship with those in our community that need our support. As we approach the end of 2015, please keep Berks Encore in mind as you consider your planned giving options. Berks Encore is proud to offer the service of grocery home delivery, thanks to the partnership with Redner’s Warehouse Markets! If you are over the age of 50 and have diffi culty getting to a grocery store or doing your own shopping, Berks Encore’s volun-teers will do your shopping and deliver the groceries to your home on a regular basis.

“My neighbors have been wonderful helping me, but I don’t want to ask for their help too often,” says Jeanne, one of the many Grocery Shopping Program recipients. “This program has changed my life because now I am eating food again that I couldn’t get before and it is wonderful.”

Now, the Grocery Shopping Program is able to accept SNAP (Food Stamp) payments from clients who utilize them.

Hello Seniors:

Another month has fl own by and it is now fall. Our trip for August was around Berks County. We saw some covered bridges, stopped at a winery, and ate at Cracker Barrel. Then we stopped at Oley Dairy for ice cream. Our trip in September was to Atlantic City. Our October trip is to Penn’s Peak and it is full.

At our August meeting, we had 111 attending. Our meal was hamburger barbecue, macaroni salad, chips, and desserts. Martha Sitler was our speaker and she talked about sleep and different causes of why we can’t sleep—very interesting .

We would like everyone to keep in mind members who are going through some medical problems. They are Terry Manning, Kay Shunk, Joyce Wanner, and Sonja Hurwitz. Keep them in your prayers. Everyone is welcome at our meetings. We meet the fourth Wednesday of Month.

Tuesday, August 4 – 51 Blandon Senior Citizens boarded the Elite Coach with Driver Patrick at the wheel, headed for the Hickory Bridge Farm in Orrtanna, PA, for our noon meal, and then continued to the Totem Pole Playhouse to see the show “Grease,” which was a very good show and enjoyed by all!

Wednesday, August 12 – 58 seniors attended the second Annual Picnic, held at Maier’s Grove, in the Wilson F. Cramer Pavilion! Food was again provided by Kathryn’s Catering of Blandon. Desserts were provided by members whose last name began with the letters L thru Z!

Thank you members that provided the desserts for both picnics! Entertainment was provided by Time Frame, a Barbershop & Doo-Wop/A Capella Quartet that included the following singers: Arlan, Harold, Louie & John! Thanks so much, Time Frame, for the very enjoyable program!

Our next Regular Scheduled Meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 14th and then again on Oct. 28th, at the Maidencreek Church, along Rt. 73, 261 Main Street, Blandon, PA. All Senior Citizens are invited to join us at 1:00 p.m.!

burg Area Middle School Cafeteria Beginning at 2:00 p.m. Our programs for these meetings are as follows:October 14 – We will see a DVD on Egypt. This program is the same as was

shown in a travelogue at RACC.

October 28 – Cindy Robertson will sing and play her keyboard.

November 11 – We will have our fall banquet and play bingo afterward.

November 25 – No meeting due to Thanksgiving.

December 9 – Mrs. Christine Ryan and her students will present a musical program. We will have cookies and beverages as a snack treat.

Our trips for the rest of the year are as follows:On Tuesday, October 6 we will travel by motor coach to

Shanksville, Pa to visit the Flight 93 National Memorial and the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel. We will enjoy a luncheon buf-fet at the Oakhurst Tea Room in Somerset, Pa.

On Monday November 9, we will take a daytrip to the Mount Airy Casino In Mount Pocono to see a Las Vegas hit show “Bar-bara and Frank.” Each person will receive a $20 free slot play and we will have a luncheon buffet at the casino.

On Tuesday, December 1, we will take a motor coach trip to the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse in Clinton, New Jersey, to see “ A PLAYHOUSE CHRISTMAS 2015.” We always enjoy the musical that their wonderfully talented singers and dancers present.

DANA-PARISH RETIREES Our meeting for October will be held on Thursday, the fi rst.

Join other Parish retirees / former employees (management and union) for the luncheon at Wegman’s Family Restaurant. It is still located at the same address — 4401 Pottsville Pike (Route 61) in Reading. Our private dining / meeting area is located on the lower level. Please use the rear entrance. Ample parking is always available.

The hot meal is served buffet-style at noon. This month’s buffet is very interesting. There are two entrees: baked haddock 60 percent, roast beef 40 percent. The sides will be: parsley potatoes, stewed tomatoes (inebriated to perfection), rolls/butter. Dessert: you should know by now.

The gathering of brothers and sisters commences at 11 a.m. — earlier, if you need to get out of the house — and concludes at approximately 1:30 p.m. At press time no speaker has been fi nalized.

TUCKERTON NIFTY FIFTY CLUBA committee comprised of Robert Bankes, Robert Daniels,

Joanne Bilski, Alan Wenrich, and Linda Kemmerling have been meeting on updating revisions of the Tuckerton Nifty Fifty By-Laws, Polices and Procedures.

At the August 10 meeting of the Tuckerton Nifty Fifty Club, President Robert Daniels read the revised portions to club members. A second reading of the Revisions will be done in September, followed by a discussion and vote concerning accep-tance of changes. After reading the By-Law changes, Bob and other men left to pick up the chickens for our annual picnic.

Alan Wenrich, Vice President, took over conducting the business meeting. Upon conclusion of the meeting everything was ready to eat. Runners delivered chickens to seated members along with all the fi xings.

When the meal was fi nished we got in line to make our own sundaes. Everything was organized and food was delicious. A good time for all. Debbie Wahl provided music and jokes.

Marilyn Daniels had several trips in August. On August 25 the trip went to Hunterdon Hills Dinner Theatre. This is a trip everyone likes. A special trip was set on August 27 to Knoebels. It was a pretty day so people got to walk around, eat and go on rides. I’m told it was really a nice trip.

In September the Mystery Trip leaves nice and early. The two buses leave at 6:45 a.m. Marilyn thinks this is one of her best trips ever offered! No details are known as I’m writing this. Next month I will give the details in the Berks Encore. Mystery Trips are fun.

SENIOR CLUB OF LAURELDALEHi Everyone! Here’s an update on our Sr. Club activities:We received a nice THANK YOU letter from the PA.

Wounded Warriors, Inc., for our donation of $383.00, collected from our generous members on June 12. This was our 2015 An-nual Community Service Project to help and say thanks to our past and present Military men and women.

July 29 – Our eighth trip this year to the Rainbow Comedy Playhouse was enjoyed by 41 passengers, who laughed at the show “Too Many Cooks.” And the buff et lunch was delicious, as usual.Bus Drawing Winners: Anna T. Heckman, Shirley A. Oswald, Elizabeth D. Hymes.

August 10 – Sadly, our Past President, Milford “Tony” Dunlap, passed away. He was our leader for six years, from 2009 to 2014. Our Club has made a donation to the Literacy Council in Tony’s honor.

August 12 – We had a busload of 50 passengers to Atlantic City – Caesars Casino and the Boardwalk. We played the slots, walked the boards, did some people watching and shopping, and lunched at various restau-rants. It was a great seahorse getaway day tip.Bus Drawing Winners: Jan L. August 14, Past Meeting – Lunch was delicious turkey barbecues, chips and beverages, with second helpings. Our entertainment program featured Al Zetner, with piano music and sing–alongs. Our 141 attending

members enjoy the comradery at our meetings, including “catch-up” conversation with friends.

Our Club Treasurer is resigning after 12 years of service. We extend a big THANK YOU to Russel D. Yoder, for taking care of our fi nances from 2003 to 2015.

October 7 – Board Meeting at the Church at 9:30 a.m.

LEAGUE OF GOLDEN AGERS, MOHNTON, PAWe left on a lovely day and traveled to Northumberland

County for our mystery trip. Our fi rst stop was the Rolling Hills Red Deer Farm, and then on to Sunbury to visit the Owens farm. We learned facts about their sheep, pigs, chickens and bee hives, then it was off to lunch at the Carriage Corner

Restaurant. Then we visited the Green Ridge Grocery where we received a whoopie pie as we left, and continued on to our last stop of the day at the Shade Mountain Winery for some sampling and shopping. There are still some seats left for the October 7 trip to Hunterdon Hills (cost is $85), as well as the December 2 trip to Kennett Square for lunch at the Kennett Square Inn and then Longwood Gardens (cost is $90). WEST LAWN SENIOR CLUBGreetings from the West Lawn Seniors group. Our summer

programs are winding down, and we are preparing for the start of our 2016 season of trips and meetings. We just had our yearly picnic with great food and a fun time for all that attended, and we are ready for fun and trips.

At our September 1 business meeting, we kicked off our 2016 membership campaign. Dues are only $5 per year.

Our October 6 business meeting will feature entertainment by “The Keys of Life” music, with refreshments following the music. We meet at the West Lawn Community Center of the West Lawn United Methodist Church, located at Woodside and Noble Streets in West Lawn. Our social meeting with

Bingo and games will be on October 20 starting at 1:00 p.m., with refreshments. Come join us for a fun time.

Mark your calendars, our group meets the fi rst and third Tuesdays of the month. The exception of November’s business meeting this year will be Monday, November 2 because of Elec-tion Day.

At our November business meeting, the entertainment will feature Dr. Rudy Ruth, Superintendent of Wilson District.

The trip committee is preparing the trip schedule for March through November of 2016. The confi rmed trips for 2016 cur-rently are: March 31 – Sight and Sound, “Samson,” with a meal included at “Good and

Plenty”

April 29 – American Music Theater, “The Crooners,” with a family style lunch

We are currently waiting for the remaining confi rmation on the rest of our trip calendar! We will publish them as soon as possible, with sign up dates, cost and trip itineraries available for all members.

Please note that our trips are open to our members on a fi rst come basis, then the trips are open to the general public.

In passing, we remember our oldest member, Clara R. Roth, who passed away on July 25. She was 104 years old and was on our free membership “Over 90 List” for 14 years!
