TV Tip-Overs
Safety Tips
How kids are getting hurt and what to do about it.
© 2018 Safe Kids Worldwide
Every 3 weeks a child dies from a television tip-over.*
Ten children go to the ER every day because of a TV tip-over.
* Based on estimates from CPSC and NEISS data for 2000-2016.
A 36" heavier, box-style CRT TV falling three feet creates the same momentum as a 1-year-old child falling 10 stories.
Properly place your old TV. If you have a heavier, box-style TV, place it on a low, stable piece of furniture that is appropriate for the TV’s size and weight.
Secure your flat-panel TV. Be sure your flat-panel TV is properly secured with a wall mount that has a safety certification by an independent laboratory (such as UL, CSA, ETL).
Recycle your TV. To find a location near your home that safely and responsibly recycles unwanted TVs, go to www.GreenerGadgets.org.
36% of child fatalities from 2000-2016 due to TV tip-overs involved someone climbing on the furniture or TV.
34% of households still have a CRT in the home.
7 out of 10 kids injured by TV tip-overs are ages 5 and under.
From 2000-2016, 51% of child fatalities due to TV and furniture tip-overs occurred in a bedroom.
For more information visit safekids.org. © 2018 Safe Kids Worldwide®
Secure TVs • Mount flat-
screen TVs to the wall. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that you have a secure fit.
• If you have a large, heavier, box-style cathode ray (CRT) TV, place it on a low, stable piece of furniture that can hold the TV’s size and weight.
Recycle Old TVs• To find a location
near your home that safely and responsibly recycles unwanted TVs, go to www.GreenerGadgets.org.
Secure Furniture• Use anti-tip brackets,
braces or wall straps to secure furniture to the wall.
• Install stops on dresser drawers to keep them from being pulled all the way out. Multiple open drawers can cause the weight to shift, making it easier for a dresser to tip over.
Rearrange Household Items• Keep heavier items on lower shelves and in
lower drawers.
• Avoid placing remote controls, food, toys or other items in places where kids might be tempted to climb up or reach for them.
Everything you need to know to keep your kids safe from TV and furniture tip-overs.
TV and Furniture Tip-Over Prevention Tips
You wouldn’t think to bring a baby home from the hospital without a car seat or have your child ride a bike without a helmet. Protecting your children from the potential risk of TV and furniture tip-overs is another important part of keeping them safe.
Every 3 weeks a child dies from a television tipping over. Ten children visit the emergency room every day because of a TV tip-over.

Disasters occur frequently throughout our state. Children make up one quarter of our population and data has shown that children may make up a disproportionate number of victims during disasters. Their medical, emotional and living needs are unique and require special considerations in disaster management. The National Pediatric Readiness Project, a multi-phased quality improvement initiative conducted in 2015, revealed pre-hospital and hospital professionals in non-pediatric facilities may not be trained in dealing with an influx of pediatric patients during these events and most disaster plans make little or no considerations for children. Preparation and planning are vital to insure the safety and survival of our most vulnerable population. The training format of small group learning will provide organizational and/or regional teams an opportunity to review and discuss current pediatric trauma management guidelines and identify opportunities for improvement in their systems. In order to gain the greatest benefit, we highly recommend attendance by organization/community teams.
