ARES Zone 3B Phillips and Norton Co. Bill AAØOM

District 3B Phillips and Norton County ARES group conducted 4 nets in the month of September on the AA0HJ repeater in Phillipsburg on 147.120MHZ. QNI - 24 QTC - 0 Time: 40 Minutes. Participating stations: AA0OM, KD0ARW, KD0CJF, N0RLT, AA0HJ, N0LL, AA0QO, and K0DTS. At approximately 1615 hours 15 September, AA0OM received a call from the Phillips County hospital requesting activation of the ARES unit to participate in their annual disaster drill. At 1635, AA0OM, KD0ARW, KD0CJF, K0DTS, and AA0HJ had assembled at the Hospital. The 2 meter station was on the air at 1640 and the team of KD0ARW, KD0CJF and AA0HJ was dispatched to the accident scene (School bus wreck) and reported to the incident commander.

Within 5 minutes their station was on the air and began passing traffic to the hospital via AA0OM and K0DTS. The last message was passed to the scene at 1811 advising them to close down station and return to hospital for critique and meal. This was the first time the 3B ARES team had been activated. Welearned alot. Including what was NOT needed, How many people WERE needed to function in that environment, and what we could do to improve. Attached is a photo of K0DTS Don Shields (on left) and AA0OM Bill Posson at the station set up at the Hospital.

Fall is upon us, and finally an end to the VERY busy public service event season.

Hams throughout the Kansas City area are very fortunate to have the opportunity to practice their skills at the myriad of rides, walk a thons, motorcycle events and parades. New and more leaders are stepping up to organize these events, and everyone has the opportunity to LEAD, not just participate in these events.

Some events leaders have been doing them for more than 25 years, and are ready to hand off to the next generation.

I am encourage our ARES members to take a leadership role next year. There will be new events that ask for our help, as well as others that just need new leadership blood.

They can get started with a Coordinators Toolkit I have put together that includes examples of comm plans, APRS templates, rosters and presentations.

I look forward to hams in KC supporting even more events next year.
