VME … What else ? About 20 years that VMEBus was officially introduced as CO standard

platform (PS/SL 1990 Controls renovation)

Over 1000 FECs deployed for operation including 550 PowerPC/LynxOS

From 2007, we faced with VME platform obsolescence in LHC Injectors chain

2009 (ACCOR): Major contract with Industry to use multi-core Intel/Linux (Today: 10% LS1: 50%)

In view of LHC upgrade phases and next generation accelerators (CLIC), we think it’s time now to provide state-of-art on Front-End architecture and assess new solutions for the future

VME is slightly behind its industrial competitors that are ready with new technologies: Compactness, Performance and High-Availability

Strong and Ristretto please!

Indeed, since 2006 Telecom market made significant investments to define Embedded RT hardware: MicroTCA AdvancedTCA(ATCA) MicroTCA (yTCA)

MicroTCA opportunity?

Inherits ATCA capabilities: Bandwith, Performance, Robustness, RAS Open architecture (PICMG consortium) Protocol agnostic (PCIe, GbEthernet, RapidIO, ..) Global and Intelligent remote management (IPMI) Small form factor system Cost-effective solution

MicroTCA for Physics (xTCA) High-data transfer rates Rear Transition Module (extended IPMI) Backplane timing distribution and signal triggering

Physics community already opted for xTCA architecture (SLAC, DESY, ..)

Spicy!

Several years of R&D resulted in the first CLIC Design Conception (CDR1 for Controls)

In particular, CO/FE has to provide Generic read-out system (ACM) for all two-beam modules (TDR 2016)

ACM Design is rather challenging: Integration and compactness: 22000 modules Radiation hardness: ~1kGy/year ( no CPU, no OS) Low power consumption: <0.5W/IO ch. (100W/ACM) Synch. LAN data transfer between ACM and CLIC control system

(immune to EMC) Remote Configuration and Diagnostic facilities …

With a long finish …!

BE/CO has been mandated to steer the evaluation and prototyping activities CLIC Control system 2012: Focus on Beam Instrumentation for CTF3 (LAPP)

CLIC is extremely ambitious, but it is just starting … one can bet on Technological advances and Collaboration

BE/CO has direct interest to evaluate new platform for future use (LHC included) and to invest on potential improvement of the CO multi-tier approach
