Yanomami

Society

The Yanomami are large tribes in South America. The people live in rainforests and mountains of northern Brazil and Southern Venezuela. These days their population are around 32,000. The Yanomami area in Brazil is estimated to be twice the size of Switzerland.

Culture

The Yanomami live in large, circular, communal houses called yanos or shabonos. Some can house up to 400 people. The central area is used for activities such as rituals, feasts and games. At night, hammocks are slung near the fire which is stoked all night to keep people warm. Decisions are made by consensus, frequently after long debates where everybody has a say. Tasks are divided between the sexes. Men hunt the meat while women grow crops, collect nuts and shell fish.

Global World Intruders

The Yonamami area contains many gold underneath the ground. 40,000 Brazilian Gold miners have intruded the Yonomami area to dig up some gold. They have made a road to get to the area much faster and to transfer object/items. After the mining happened they have brought with them many diseases, pollution, damage and have killed 20% of the people in seven years. Mining in the area was banned and still many minors would try to sneak up.
