New Provincial Advisor for
Aboriginal Supported Child Development Programs of British
Columbia
Hi Everyone,
It’s been a busy 23 years working in the professional field of
Aboriginal Early Child Development. I first started in this career
as an Aboriginal Infant Development Program Consultant working
with families within the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council based out
of Port Alberni, BC. In 2012, my role was expanded to include
Aboriginal Supported Child Development Program Consultant and
Maternal Child Health Outreach (Doula). I also spent a number
of years as a regional advisor for AIDP and ASCD.
In the role of supported child development, I promoted inclusivity
for all children in child care settings, and working collaboratively
with Community Service Providers, Health Professionals and
various levels of Child Services, I have been able to facilitate
growth in the following domains; physical, cognitive,
communication, personal, social/emotional, behavioral and
educational growth for infants, children and youth with
developmental delays or disability. I honor the culture and
language of our Aboriginal children and families.
I have 2 grown adult children, a son and a daughter (son-in-law)
and 2 grandchildren. I am a Tseshaht First Nation member and
currently reside in the Tseshaht First Nation Community.
I am looking forward to meeting, supporting and working with all
our ASCD Consultants, ASCD Regional Advisors and communities
within British Columbia.
Aboriginal Supported Child Development Provincial Advisor

E-NEWS
Fall 2018
A NOTE FROM THE
AIDP PROVINCIAL ADVISOR:
Happy Fall everyone! First, I would like to acknowledge Nadine
Gagne-L’Hirondelle for starting this quarterly newsletter for all
our programs and also thank Jessica Mugford our AIDP/ASCD
administration assistant for taking on this task. We will do
our best to have these quarterly newsletters out consistently
with important and relevant information. We will also
provide space for announcements, training, celebration,
awareness and anything else that may be of interest. We
welcome any information you wish to share about your
program and/or community etc. in this newsletter.
Speaking of welcome, we wish Nadine well with gratitude
for her hard work and huge heart as she leaves our provincial
office and welcome Jackie Watts as the new ASCD Provincial
Advisor. I look forward to working with Jackie and the ongoing work
ahead of us for AIDP and ASCD.
As AIDP continues to support our children and families, I must confess, although I still love my job very much, being a
grandmother to 3 wonderful grandchildren is now my #1 favorite job! Our work has a whole new meaning for me as I
watch my sons and daughters-in-law begin their parenting journey. AIDP and family support and early intervention will
continue and always be my commitment and passion, especially for families who need extra support.
For as long as AIDP has existed, we have understood the need to support the whole family. It has been recently stated that
AIDP has practiced cultural Safety and Trauma Informed Practice before it was what it is now. We can be very proud.
Keep up your awesome good work! I wish all of you a wonderful fall and we will send out our winter newsletter addition
before long.
Respectfully,
NEWSLETTER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, November 30th at 4:30 p.m. If you wish to submit anything for the winter newsletter, please submit to Jessica Mugford at: [email protected]

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
FUNDS: Professional Development Funds are for IDP/AIDP and SCD/ASCD
professionals.
It came to our attention that one of our professionals did not know about
the Pro D Funds until recently, so if there is one, there must be others.
We would like you to know a few things:
1. The annual Pro D Funds (provided by MCFD) are available to
all IDP/AIDP/SCD/ASCD professionals who have been
employed for a minimum of 6 months and for a minimum
of .5 FTE. You are not eligible if you are on leave from your
position.
2. The four deadline dates in the Pro D User Guide are for intake
for academic courses, generally at UBC.
3. You can apply at any time for Pro D Funds for professional
development opportunities.
4. We recommend you submit an application a minimum of 2
weeks prior to your training to ensure we get your request to
the review committee in time for your course our workshop.
5. A review committee of our peers works together to review all
applicants and ensures they meet the criteria in the current Pro
D User Guide.
6. Please replace any outdated Pro D User Guides with the most
current one. User Guide
7. You must apply in advance of any training requests. This
funding is not retroactive. You cannot apply for funds for
courses or conferences that have already taken place.
8. We hope that your agency can do their best to support your
continuing education and contribute 50% of the funding
needed for your training. If not, we need time to discuss your
situation with your supervisor, please give us as much time as
possible so we can communicate your situation to the review
committee in time for registration deadlines etc.
We hope this information is helpful as you consider your ongoing
professional development needs and as you apply for Professional
Development Funds to provide financial support.
We must receive all original receipts within 2-3 weeks
from the event to submit claims.

2018 Cowichan Elders Gathering
Our provincial office attended the 2018 Elder’s Gathering, hosted by Cowichan Tribes
in Duncan, B.C. We provided two workshops where we aimed to collect stories to
share with our programs and families. We also volunteered to host the Elder’s Fashion
Show, which we even ended up participating in!

Our Provincial Office’s
Summer 2018 Trip to the
GoodLife
Pacific Autism Centre
On August 1st, the AIDP/ASCD team took a trip over to Richmond, to visit the Goodlife Pacific Autism Centre, to learn more about the resources and amenities
available at this “one stop shop” for families affected by autism, and inquire about how their resources could benefit Indigenous families affected by autism in BC.
The meeting, with Dawn McKenna and Anjela Godber, was a productive exchange in ideas and knowledge. The space was beautiful, airy, sound-proof, sensory
friendly, and accessible, and may be a possible future meeting place for AIDP regional coordinator meetings!
Dawn and Anjela were very enthusiastic and receptive to hearing about how they could coordinate with AIDP to better serve Indigenous families affected by autism,
and AIDP looks forward to working with them in the future.

Namgis held a Cultural Celebration and it was a huge success. They
welcomed guests with the assistance of the Head Chief of the
Kwakuitl Territory David Knox.
Namgis’s Playgroup children were amazing hosts and enjoyed
participating in a giveaway of toys, pens, bookmarkers and fruit
(a case of apples, oranges and bananas) to honored guests.
Lunch was served with a menu of
soup and desserts to 85 guests.
Logan Wilson led the children in
numerous songs as they beat
their new drums and sang with
the singers.
AIDP/ASCD Provincial
Office’s Visit to
Bella Coola
October 9th the AIDP/ASCD Provincial Office staff visited
Healthy Begginings in Bella Coola. We enjoyed a lunch
with the staff and families, and a couple days of training.
The program is brand new and the staff here are already
amazing at providing service to the local families. We
cannot wait to see them again and see how much more this
team can achieve by next year!
(Jackie Watts, Cindy Siwallace Mara
Pootlas, Jasmine Edgar, Carmen Hass,
Antoinette Hans, Lisa Tallio)
“A most recent Community visit to Nuxalk Nation, Bella
Coola was amazing! Thank you Lisa Tallio and your
amazing team for your warm welcome and introduction
to your Healthy Beginnings Team – the families you work
with are very fortunate. I also really appreciated
Antoinette and Carmen for showing Jessica and I the
beautiful surroundings of your territory”.
Thank you so much.
