AIRLINE ACTIVITY:

Staff continued to work on marketing and outreach to encourage our locals to ‘Fly Flagstaff First.’

American and United airlines will both be flying for our airport beginning Spring 2019. There will be 8 flights per day, 7 days a week. We are also working with both airlines on terminal needs and more.

Important items to note when flying and seen on our new advertisements: 1. Be dropped off at the airport vs. parking 2. Arrive 90 minutes prior to your flight 3. Check luggage 4. Print boarding pass 5. Begin TSA screening ASAP 6. Place liquids in a clear plastic bag for screening

PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM: Our public address system was repaired and brought back up in the terminal. The sound has improved to the best level the existing speakers can provide. It is much clearer, and a test team could understand the public addresses. Thanks to our flying patrons for their patience.

ALERT II: A twin-engine Baron was flying into Flagstaff Pulliam Airport and had a mechanical failure. The aircraft was able to land on one engine with injury to anyone on board. Our Airport Rescue Fire Fighters (ARFF) assisted with the removal of the aircraft from the runway.

MEDICAL TRAINING: Staff worked with Guardian Air on joint code medical call training. Great teamwork! SWIFT TRAVEL CENTER: Swift Travel Center opened at the Airport Business Park. The manager stated that it has been a good opening and those stopping in were excited by their presence. We are happy that Swift is another airport partner.

COUNCIL BUSINESS LISTENING TOUR:

Staff brought three representatives from the HEALTHCARE sector to the City Council work session; Northern

Arizona Healthcare, Welbrook, and Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Arizona;

Each business provided history of their operations along with challenges and successes;

Each representative indicated that they struggle to some extent recruiting and retaining workforce;

Councilmembers also attended a tour of all three healthcare facilities that same week.

CONSUMER ELECTRONIC SHOW: Staff attended the Consumer Electronic show in Las Vegas and met with over 20

entrepreneurs interested in business literature on Flagstaff. Staff will continue to follow up with these companies to

provide more details on the Flagstaff business climate.

FY20 ARIZONA GOVERNOR’S ROADSHOW BUDGET: Staff attended and noted a few items as it pertains to

economic and workforce development-

o Governor restored Arizona competes fund deposit to 6 million in on-going funding and 1 million in one-

time funding for grants that attract, expand, or retain Arizona enterprises;

o 3 million allocated to expanding rural broadband infrastructure. This money is intended to help rural

leaders build high speed infrastructure;

o 10 million allocated to strengthen career and technical education. $1,000 incentive payment to schools

for each high school graduate who has an approved industry certification. Those top areas of need are

as follows: Manufacturing, Business & Financial Services, Health Care and Construction;

o 21 million to expand the Arizona Teachers Academy. Eligibility has been expanded and is no longer

limited to education. STEM majors at state universities are now eligible and extends to non-resident

and community college post baccalaureate students. Students who participate may request tuition

benefits. A 1,000 stipend is available to students who agree to teach in a critical need area.

INNOVATE WASTE CHALLENGE: Staff worked with the City of Flagstaff Public Information Officer (PIO) to rollout

the series of videos for the Innovate Waste Challenge. More to come on the results of this challenge…

Business Attraction, Retention, and Expansion

JOEL MONTALVO PARK MOSAIC:

THE BEAUTIFICATION AND ARTS COMMISSION (BPAC) scored Sonja London-Hall’s submission highest so London-Hall becomes the mosaicist for the Joel Montalvo Park Mosaic.

London-Hall explains her design this way: ”The mosaic itself will follow the style of modern Talavera pottery design. Talavera is distinguished by strong colorful decoration. The image is an example of modern interpretation of Talavera ceramics in mosaic form. My vision involves larger pieces of bright colored porcelain, mosaic tiles similarly designed as the included image (curves, circles, flowers). Industrial grade, frost resistant, thin set mortar, porcelain-based tile, and latex based sanded grout against the cement-based wall will make for a strong, beautiful creation. In touring the site (12/20/18, 4:30 pm) the sun reflects off the wall. The future mosaic would sparkle.”

London-Hall’s design will also include recognition of Joel Montalvo by sandblasting his name and/or one of his quotes into a larger tile, as well as community involvement in the design of the mosaic. The mosaic is scheduled to be completed this summer.

ALL THINGS PARKING:

PARKFLAG OPERATIONS:

o ParkFlag is going “GREEN!” ParkFlag submitted the purchase request for an electric vehicle for use in enforcement operations.

o ParkFlag is moving forward with discussions on a replacement software vendor for its enforcement and permit application processes.

o The online form for purchasing validation codes is awaiting approval from Point-n-Pay. Once approved, ParkFlag will announce the availability of purchasing validations codes either online or at City Hall. Codes will be available to purchase in quantity of 100 or 500 at a cost of $.95 per code. Codes redeemed at kiosks only.

o ParkFlag will relocated the cash kiosk located at City Hall to the Lumberyard parking lot on San Francisco street to provide the public with a cash option for customers that do not have credit cards or uncomfortable using credit cards.

Community Design & Redevelopment: Arts & Science and Beautification

MURAL: The second mural at the East Flagstaff library is completed. This one is in the new Children’s Room and has really made it an inviting, creative space. Many thanks to Mural Mice for their hard work. DAMAGE TO MAIN LIBRARY BOOKDROP: A patron backed into the new book drop, sending pieces of their taillight up the belt. Thankfully it only caused cosmetic damage to the outside of the drop and no harm to the Automatic Machine Handler (AMH) machine. Staff is looking into fixing the damage and installing a bar so this doesn’t happen again. The book drop is still in full use. LIBRARY LUNACY: The Library hosted a Lunacy Blast Off event at City Hall. They showed the movie Hidden Figures and had activities for the whole family.

JUVENILE DETENTION BOOK TALK: Staff brought book repair materials and led students in a book repair program, as many of the books in the juvenile detention library are damaged. The classroom teacher sent this message after the session:

“(THE STUDENTS) FELT EMPOWERED LEARNING HOW TO REPAIR OUR LIBRARY BOOKS, AND HAVE TAKEN GREATER

INTEREST IN THE LIBRARY’S UPKEEP.

I’M VERY THANKFUL FOR THE TIME YOU’VE INVESTED IN THE LIBRARY PROGRAM AT JUVENILE DETENTION. WE ARE

GRATEFUL TO HAVE THE SELECTION OF BOOKS FOR THEM TO USE DURING THEIR TIME OUTSIDE OF CLASS. MANY STUDENTS

TELL ME THAT READING IN DETENTION HELPS THEM USE THEIR TIME IN A POSITIVE WAY. FOR STUDENTS WHO REGULARLY

READ, THEY APPRECIATE HAVING CHOICES OF BOOKS IN DETENTION. MANY STUDENTS DON’T TYPICALLY READ OUTSIDE OF

DETENTION, SO THEY GET A CHANCE TO PRACTICE THEIR READING SKILLS BY USING THE LIBRARY WHILE DETAINED. ONE

STUDENT CREATED A RECOMMENDED READING SECTION OF THE LIBRARY WHERE HE PLACED HIS FAVORITE BOOKS FOR

OTHERS TO TRY.

WE ALSO APPRECIATE YOUR “BOOK TALK” VISITS. I’VE SEEN HOW THE STUDENTS ENJOY DISCUSSING WHAT THEY READ,

AND HAVING THEIR OPINIONS VALUED. IN A VERY LIMITED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, THE LIBRARY YOU’VE PROVIDED IS A

SIGNIFICANT ASSET TO THEIR GENERAL EDUCATION, AND OVERALL WELL-BEING. YOUR VISITS ALWAYS SPARK THEIR

INTEREST IN EXPLORING NEW WORKS.”

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING BEGINS AGAIN:

East Flagstaff Community Library (EFCL) kicked off their 2019 after school programming with a new edition of Flaming Hot Wednesdays, a program for tweens and teens ages 12 and up. Staff fired up our new 3D pens which we received from an Arizona State Library mini-grant. The kids loved building with the 3D pens! It is super fun and easy to learn.

They made bracelets, 3D boxes, attempted a dinosaur skeleton, and one attendee even made his own decorative glasses.
