Brahma Temple Road, Ganahera,Pushkar, Rajasthan 305022, India

The presentBrahma Temple in Pushkar is believed to have been built in the14th century, though the origins of thistemple are believed to date back to 2000years. The temple is built in beautiful whitemarble, with steps leading to the mainshrine. The centralshikhara is a bright red with the figure of the'hansa' (swan, which is Brahma's vehicle)over it. Pujas here are strictly performed bysanyasi pujaris.

A fascinating legend this famous temple atPushkar. Lord Brahma slayed the demonVajranabha with his weapon, the lotus. Oncethe demon was killed, the petals fell onEarth, creating the three lakes of Pushkar, symbolising the lotus petals that fell fromLord Brahma's hands ("push" means lotusand "kar" means hand in Sanskrit).

The lord then descended to Earth toperform a holy yagna. When the time came for the finaloffering into the holy pyre, Lord Brahma'swife, Savitri was missing. Annoyed with herdelay and with the risk of the failure of thisyajna looming large, Brahma requested LordIndra to find him a wife. He then married a"Gujar's" daughter, who was purified by

being passed through a cow's body. Vishnu,Shiva and all the Brahmins sanctified thismatch. This woman was then renamedGayatri.

When Goddess Savitri finally arrived, shewas ired to see her husband find a newconsort. She then cursed Brahma that hewould never be worshipped anywhere in theworld, Vishnu to be seprated from hisconsort, Lord Indra to be easily defeated inbattles the God Agni to devour anything thatcame near him and all the Brahmin prieststo be poor. Savitri later reduced her curseand allowed Brahma to be worshipped onlyin Pushkar.

Married men and women are strictlyprohibited from entering the sanctumsanctorum or performing any rituals there. They can only offer prayers and 'prasad'from the outer hall or give them to thepriest who offers them to the Lord.
