GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO

ENERGY NEED AND BIOMASS ENERGY

Energy need has been increasing day by day with population increase and developing technologies. This situation leads the need for finding new energy sources. For the last decades, biomass energy has been considered as an alternative to available energy sources. Biomass enegy is environmentally friendly and sustainable energy source. For this reason, biomass energy has great importance as an energy source in Turkey.

What are bioproducts?

Biomass is organic material made from plants and animals. Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb the sun’s energy via photosynthesis. Biomass is a renewable energy source because it is possible to grow more trees and crops. Some examples are wood, crops, manure, and some garbage.

The most common form of biomass is wood.People use wood for heating and cooking in Turkey. Another source of biomass is garbage. Trash that comes from plant or animal products is biomass.

In Turkey we use wood waste or garbage to burn and produce heat for homes and for cooking, especially in rural areas.

Why biomass?

The use of biomass energy aids in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Bio plants reduce the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

This “recycling” of carbon dioxide works if plants are grown for the purpose of collecting biomass energy.

What is Biodiesel and its effect to the environment?

Biodiesel is a fuel made with vegetable oils, fats, or greases. It is renewable fuel, and safe. It reduces the emissions of most air pollutants. Burning biomass fuels does not produce pollutants. When it is burned, biomass releases carbon dioxide. But when bio-mass crops are grown, they capture carbon dioxide through photosynthesis.

Crops like corn and sugarcane can be fermented to produce biodiesel, too.

Using biodiesel is not very common in Turkey.

Biopower

Biopower is the use of biomass to generate electricity. It has modular systems. Burning energy is captured by turbines and then its generator creates electricity. These modular systems are designed for small towns or individual consumers’ use.

Advantages of Biomass Energy

1) It’s a renewable source of energy.2) It gives less pollution while generating energy.3) Biomass energy helps environment to be clean4) Biomass energy is relatively cheaper and reliable.5) It can be generated from everyday human and animal, vegetable and agricultural wastes etc.

7) It is cheaper energy when compared to oil supplies. As oil supplies are getting depleted day by day, it is becoming expensive

8) Growing biomass crops use up carbon dioxide and produces oxygen.

6) Recycling of waste reduces pollution and spread of diseases.

Disadvantages of Biomass Energy

1) Crops which are used to produce biomass energy are seasonal and are not available during all year.2) Building biomass plants is expensive
