Parent/Guardians,

Welcome to the first curriculum newsletter for 2017/18 outlining what your child will be studying this week at Al Jazeera Academy. We also include in this letter each fortnight some important reminders along with an update on some of the key Secondary School issues in learning and some of the achievements of our young people.

I do hope your son/ daughter is adjusting well to year 12. If you do have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Achievement Leader in the first instance to arrange an appointment. Mr Talha has overall responsibility for the Year 12 boys and Ms Renee for the year 12 girls.

Please do ensure your child has a maximum attendance record, that they have the correct uniform and they come to school properly equipped and eager to learn. Year 12 is a very important year with students completing the AS course which requires more focus on learning than in previous years, as the AS courses are more challenging. The teachers will be focusing on exam technique and ensuring high grades to help students achieve the Thanawiya. so it is important that students attend all lessons. • Carry out and interpret the results of simple test tube reactions, such as displacements, reactions of acids, precipitations, to relate the observations to the state symbols used in equations and to practice writing full and ionic equations. • Use chemical equations and experimental results to deduce percentage yields and atom economies in laboratory and industrial processes and understand why they are important. • Make a salt and calculate the percentage yield of product, e.g. preparation of a double salt (ammonium iron(II) sulfate from iron, ammonia and sulfuric acid). • Demonstrate an understanding of the term enthalpy change, ΔH and construct simple enthalpy level diagrams showing the enthalpy change • Recall the sign of ΔH for exothermic and endothermic reactions, e.g. illustrated by the use of exo- and endothermic reactions in hot and cold packs. • Recall the definition of standard enthalpy changes of reaction, formation, combustion, neutralisation and atomisation and use experimental data to calculate energy transferred in a reaction and hence the enthalpy change of the reaction. This will be limited to experiments where substances are mixed in an insulated container and combustion experiments evaluate the results obtained from experiments using the expression: energy transferred in joules = mass × specific heat capacity × temperature change and comment on sources of error and assumptions made in the experiments. The following types of experiments should be performed:

i experiments in which substances are mixed in an insulated container and the temperature rise measured

ii simple enthalpy of combustion experiments using, e.g. a series of alcohols in a spirit burner

• Plan and carry out an experiment where the enthalpy change cannot be measured directly, e.g. the enthalpy change for the decomposition of calcium carbonate using the enthalpy changes of reaction of calcium carbonate and calcium oxide with hydrochloric acid. • Demonstrate an understanding of the terms bond enthalpy and mean bond enthalpy, and use bond enthalpies in Hess cycle calculations and recognize their limitations. 1. Some Key Reminders

• Students must bring their tablets to all lessons. Please ensure that your child has their

tablet with them fully charged at all times.

• Mobile phones are not allowed to be used by pupils in school at any time. If pupils bring them they must be handed in at the start of the day and collected at the end of the day. Phones will be confiscated if pupils are caught with them and parents will be required to come in and collect them.

2. School Events

Last week the Year 11 girls went to the Escape Hunt in Dar Al Salaam Mall. This was to help

build team skills and communication. A productive day was had by all. Many thanks to Ms

Daima, Ms Renee, Ms Amelia and Ms Debbie for supervising the students on this trip.

Pink October, the annual charity fundraising to raise awareness for cancer is now underway

with a variety of activities planned for the month.
