Stories of a Farm Wifeby Tammy Page

The Ole JC Penney Sewing MachineSewing, I love to sew! Or, should I say, I loved to sew. My poor, dusty and dry sewing machine is sitting on my old enamel top table in my office where it has sat for many years. I used to sew cute little sundresses, shorts, and even those country jumpers complete with ceramic buttons for my girls. They had matching blue and white gingham jumpers with homemade red bows for their hair for one of their Christmas programs. I also made sweet lavender jumpers with petite flowers on them for Easter one year. They looked so cute! One of my favorite things to make, and sometimes the hardest were the Barbie and Cabbage Patch clothes. Those little seams were so hard to maneuver sometimes. One year I made the girls flannel gowns and a matching one for their baby dolls. And, of course, their baby dolls always had

warm flannel blankets for their cradles. I would sit for hours after the children had gone to bed and many hours after I should have, to complete several outfits for each baby doll. When my husband and I were young and money was tight, for Christmas gifts I made aprons for all the women in the family. I still have mine and use it occasionally. These days the only time I use my sewing machine is to mend a seam or sew a hem. I’ve not made anything from a pattern for many years. Oh how I loved to go back to the material section, climb up on a stool and look through those huge pattern books. Is McCalls still in business? I learned to sew from my mom who made many beautiful outfits for my sisters and me. She made matching shorts outfits for us for vacations along with a coordinating headbands. One particular outfit that I remember is a cream and brown dotted swiss outfit we wore on our trip to St. Augustine, Florida. In case one of us got lost, all you’d have to do is look for the matching outfit and be able to tell we were from the same family for sure. My mom also made all four of my prom dresses. They were so pretty and it was a given that I would not run into anyone on prom night with the same dress. When I was engaged to be married, my mom, my bridesmaids and I picked out patterns and my mom made the bridesmaids sundresses, like she didn’t have anything else to do?I still would like to uncover the “old gal”, dust her off and get her to running smooth again. I have some ideas of what I’d like to make but then again, I’d probably also have to replace my spools of dry-rotten thread! Maybe this would be a project for the new year, when the snow keeps me inside. Tammy lives on a working farm with her family. –Tammy lives on a working farm with her family .

Mini JewelsCountry Register Mystery Quilt 2018

Designed by Ann JonesFor those of you who collect 5” pre-cut square packs and don’t know what to do with them, this is the pattern for you. Ann loves batiks and couldn’t resist some batiks I had in the shop so this Mystery Quilt was designed specifically for them! It’s fast, fun and easy! The 5”squares in this quilt are to the dark to medium range. Coordinating fabrics are light and medium light. The coordinating fabrics should not over power your 5”squares.Block size will finish at 12x12” and your quilt will finish at 56x56” which is perfect for a child. If you want it bigger, you’ll just need to make more blocks!

FABRIC REQUIREMENTSForty eight (48) 5” pre-cut squares- “Fabric A”1 yard light fabric to coordinate with your squares “Fabric C”1 yard medium/light fabric to coordinate with your squares –“Fabric B”

Border 1 ¾ yard light fabricBinding ½ yard medium fabricBatting 60 x 60”Backing 60 x 60” (or 3 yards if using 45”fabric)

CONSTRUCTION:We are making 9-Patch blocks. We will be making half square triangles so you might want to separate your fabrics into 2 piles: a dark pile and a “light pile” so you have contrast.

Blocks 1 & 2- Make 6 of eachFor each block cut:Three (3)- 4 ½ x 4 ½ light Fabric C.Three (3)-4 ½ x 4 ½ medium Fabric B.Two (2) 4 ½ x 4 ½ Fabric ATwo (2) – 5 “squares Fabric A – choose a lighter and darker for contrast

Using your 5” squares, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the light one and right sides together (dark/light), sew scant ¼” seam on either side of the draw line. Cut the diagonal line and press the seams toward the darker fabric. This will give you two half square triangle blocks. You will need to square these up to 4 ½”.

Block 1 and Block 2 are identical EXCEPT for placement of the half square triangle! In Block 1 the DARK side of Fabric A will be on the OUTSIDE BOTTOM corner (light side towards the center of the block). In Block 2 the LIGHT Side of Fabric A will be in the OUTSIDE BOTTOM Corner (dark side towards the center of the block)

Look for part II of this mystery quilt in the March- April issue of The Country Register. For questions contact Nine Patch Quilt & Fabrics, Nevada, MO.www.ninepagtchnevada.com or [email protected] or 417-667-7100.

Primitive Grungy Rooster Doll Pattern Instructions from tennesee ridge primitives

We fell in love with this pattern and since farmhouse is all the rage, we thought it would be perfect for this issue. Who doesn’t love grungy and primitive? We are so excited that Becky at Tennesee ridge primitives gave us permission to include their pattern for you to enjoy! So, let’s get started! Be sure to follow the instructions below:

This is so much fun to make…..AND It is SUPER Easy!!! Get all of your materials ready……..Then get a cup of coffee and read all of the instructions before beginning your project! It is much easier to do it that way! You can make a template of the pattern pieces out of cardstock paper, or cardboard for future use if you’d like, I do that a lot with patterns that I use frequently. Ok, lets get started!! The 1st thing that you’ll need to do is tape the 2 pattern pieces together as indicated on the pattern pieces…Now trace your Rooster out onto doubled muslin fabric so that you’ll have 2 matching pieces of material. Use the tracing lines as your sewing lines! So be sure to cut above the tracing lines about ¼” or so, so that you will have plenty of room to machine stitch him. Be sure to leave the opening in the bottom of the rooster for turning (Right Side Out) and stuffing. Go ahead and cut out all of the other pattern pieces, the wattle, comb and the pocket for the back side of the Rooster….You’ll need to cut 2 of the comb, 2 pieces for the wattle, and 1 piece of the pocket….For your tail feathers, cut 10 strips of muslin in the shape indicated on the pattern pieces, cut them about 12” long…You can also cut a couple that are about 8” to 9” long! When you get everything cut out, get that sewing machine out and machine stitch the Rooster up….Clip to seam as shown on the pattern piece. This keeps your fabric from puckering when you turn it RSO. Turn him RSO and stuff him nice and TIGHT!!! Leave the opening OPEN where you turned and stuffed him, you will stitch that closed later! Sew the cone together as shown leaving an opening so you can hand stitch it to his head…Clip to seams as shown on the pattern piece to prevent puckering….Turn it RSO….sew your wattle up, then cut a slit on ONE LAYER ONLY! Turn it RSO…no stuffing in the wattle or cone!!! The slit won’t show, because you’ll be stitching that side against the Roosters neck! Get your tail feather pieces, your cone and wattle, and lets go on and get those colorwashed! Very simple….Get an old pan or glass bowl, put on your rubber gloves, this will get messy! Mix about 2 tablespoons of the Barn Red paint to about 2 cups of your staining mixture (Recipe Included). Mix them together using a sponge brush. Using the sponge brush, paint your cone and wattle…Lay them on an old cookie sheet lined with Freezer paper. Make sure the cone is separated at the bottom so that it won’t stick together when it is drying in the oven….If you want,

you can add a small amount of stuffing in the bottom until it gets dry! That will keep the 2 pieces separated at the bottom of the cone where you’ll stitch it to the Roosters head….Color wash the wattle the same way, but no need to worry about keeping the 2 pieces together, just lay it flat on the cookie sheet …..Put those

in the oven to dry….Get your tail feathers, take them all in your hand at once, now dip them into the color washing mixture! Holding them at the top, wring them out while they are still all together….Going DOWN to wring them out….When you get all of the excess color washing mixture out of them, take them apart and lay them on the cookie sheet….But DON’T smooth them out, leave them twisted slightly so they’ll have a good wrinkle in them when they are dry! Put them in the oven to dry….It won’t take long to dry them….Ok…now you should have the feathers, wattle and cone finished and out of the oven….Get your Rooster! Place the piece of muslin that you cut for the pocket, and using a white, or natural color of thread, hand stitch it to the back side of the Rooster! Leaving the topopen so you’ll have a pocket to tuck those feathers into :o) It’s time to get that Rooster ready for the oven! Follow these steps

carefully!! Brush him with the coffee staining mixture! I like to use an old paint brush for this! Put him in the oven on an old cookie sheet lined with freezer paper to dry completely….Whenhe is dry and out of the oven, let him cool off for a few minutes, then take a sponge brush and get an old pan lined with Freezer paper to keep down on the mess! Put on a pair of rubber gloves to do this as well! Now squeeze a lot of “ELMER’S GLUE ALL” into the pan!Using the sponge brush, brush the ENTIRE Rooster with the glue! I usually put it on thick….Next, get your Antique White craft paint, and brush it real thick right over the top of the glue!!! Try to make your brush strokes all going in the same direction….But also keep in mind that this is PRIMITIVE! :o)…..When you get him all painted overtop of the glue, take him and put him on an old cookie sheet lined with freezer paper…..Make him stand upstraight in the oven to dry! I usually wad up some extra freezer paper and place it on each side of the Rooster so that it won’t fall over…. YES, you CAN dry this in the oven…it works better if you do! Just be sure to watch it closely and don’t let it burn up! :o) When he is good and dry, you’ll have some awesome old crackling on him! He will be VERY stiff, so be careful with him while you are stitching stuff to him, don’t want to tear him anywhere! The next thing you need to do is paint his beak and the color on his neck…Trace them using a pencil very lightly, do them on BOTH sides of his neck and beak because you want topaint both sides….using a small paint brush, paint the color on his neck with Barn Red craftpaint, and his beak should be

painted with Antique Gold craft paint……Let that air dry. If you put it in front of a fan, it will be dry in just minutes :o)…….Take a needle and some thick embroidery thread, I used a Barn red embroidery thread, and it is not the exact same match as the barn red paint, but it is close enough…Turn the cone under at the bottom to give it a hem so the ragged edges won’t show on the outside, tie a knot in the end of yourthread and start UNDER the cone….give it a few small stitches all the way around…just go inand out and make the stitches small……Then tie your thread off with a small knot. Cut off the excess…now hand stitch the wattle on as well, just a few stitches at the very top. (Usepattern picture as your guide). Now get your tail feathers and hold them together at the top, then get a piece of rusty wireand wire the feathers together, at the very top. All you have to do now is place them down in the pocket on the back of the Rooster…When you get them all inside, you can ‘fluff’ them out as shown in the pattern picture! Get a quart size ZipLock bag, and add about 2 cups of dry sand….Zip it shut….be sure it is closed real good…you can also put it inside of another ZipLock bag to insure that none of the sand will leak out….Turn your Rooster upside down, and pull out the stuffing in the bottom of the Rooster!! Now take the ZipLock bag of Sand and put it inside of the Rooster….Be very careful and don’t tear your opening! When you get it inside, take som of the stuffing and stuff it back inside of the Rooster to fill any gaps that you might have…..VERY CAREFULLY, get some beige or Off White Embroidery thread and hand stitchthe opening closed…..The best way to not tear or rip your fabric when you are stitching this closed, is to hold the opening closed together in your hand while you are stitching it closed….be sure to be careful and DO NOT poke your ZipLock bag with your needle, because that will make your sand fall out….Don’t want that to happen :o) when you get it stitched closed, turn him over and fluff those tail feathers again….and hand stitch his Eyes on at this point…just tie a knot into the end of some black embroidery thread, and go in one side of the Roosters head, them come out the other side, then tie another knot in that side as well, then cup off excess thread. When you sit him upright, press down on him to make him sit on his own….This will help the sand in the bag to it’s trick :o) The only thing to do now is sprinkle him LIBERALLY with some ground cinnamon…..make him as dirty and grungy as you’d like :o) He is FINISHED and ready to display!! Wasn’t that easy???

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me at [email protected] …I’ll be more than happy to help you as best I can!

~How To Stain~5 tbsp. of Instant Coffee for each cup of HOT water. This makes a good DARK stain!(I use the Wal-Mart brand of instant coffee because if you are like me, and use a LOT of stain, it will get expensive if you use the name brand instant coffee! The generic is PERFECT for primmin’) You can also use about 4 Tea bags per 1 cup of hot water! Add about 1 tbsp of cinnamon to your coffee or tea mixture while it is still hot! This way the cinnamon will dissolve. Add some Vanilla Extract…(Mexican Vanilla is AWESOME for this!!!!) I use an old coffee pot to mix my staining solution in, and it STAYS on my counter!! I use a TON of stain! It will keep just fine sitting out all week on your counter, just be sure to cover it up when you are not using it, or you can cover it and put it in the frige. After your mixture has sat for a while and cooled off, you will have some AWESOME “sludge” grungy goop in the bottom, this is a GOOD thing! No need to throw it out if you see this…USE it!!! Pick some of it up with your brush and put it on your primitives!!! You want an uneven stain anyway, so this is a good thing. You can add candle scents to your coffee mixture also! (You can buy candle scents at any crafting store like Hobby Lobby, orJoann’s. You can also buy some really good smelling candle scents off of eBay!!!I like to use an old paintbrush or a sponge brush to brush my staining mixture on…It covers real well. Walnut Ink Crystals are also great for staining!!! I like to stain my tags with this! You can buy Walnut ink crystals off of Ebay, and a little of

this goes a LONG way!!!You will use about 1 tsp of walnut ink to about 1 cup of hot water! I like to add my walnut ink mixture to a spray bottle, (You can get one of these at any Wal-Mart or craft store). Then you can spray your primitive crafts! If you choose to use walnut ink, it takes less time to dry. I usually use the walnut ink to do my primitive tags. It is the BEST way to make tags that you are going to stamp something on, because you won’t have the gritty cinnamon on your tags that can mess up your stamps. Dry your primitives in the oven…..Set your oven temp to about 250-300 degrees….Place your prim project on an old cookie sheet…..One that you don’t mind getting paint on, if you are painting something. You can also get some aluminum foil, or freezer paper and line your cookie sheet, it makes clean up SO much easier!!! Be sure to WATCH your stuff CLOSELY in the oven so it doesn’tburn…..I check my stuff about once every 5 to 7 minutes until it is completely dry.

**Tip: You can spray your finished product with primitive room sprays, too! Your customers will LOVE getting something that smells good!! You can get all kinds of primitive room sprays on eBay!
