Greetings from the Calgary Firearms Centreand Conservation Education Centre for Excellence:The Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association (AHEIA) and the Calgary Firearms Centre and Conservation Education Centre for Excellence (CFC) are proud to welcome local and visiting shooters to the 2017 shotgun season. A special welcome to all shooters travelling from Canada and the USA for our Provincial tournament.

AHEIA is a registered charity whose mission is to make wildlife and fish a part of the value system of every Albertan. This is accomplished by providing a broad spectrum of programs geared towards getting people outdoors, learning about wildlife and wild places, and becoming responsible, ethical and respectful stewards of the environment. Students are men, women and children of all ages and from all backgrounds; many become volunteers, helping the next students to get the most from their conservation education. With safety being paramount in all programs, the AHEIA legacy is one that will resonate with outdoors-people for generations to come.

The Calgary Firearms Centre experienced some upgrades in 2016, including refurbished skeet machines and skeet houses, partially funded by the generous donations of club members, and a rejuvenating facelift on the clubhouse, to name a few. We also introduced a successful Women’s League, as well as a Youth League, that will be offered again this year. Thank you to everyone who went the extra mile to show your support of this place of social gathering, skills development and sportsmanship. I’m proud to be associated with such a family-minded group.

In addition to the upgrading at the CFC, AHEIA has been busy at our other centres in Calgary, Edmonton and Alford Lake improving the facilities and programs offered. We continue to embrace technology for student learning and resources, and have been working on several new online courses and apps to be released in the not too distant future. Summer camps and seminars remain as popular as ever, with waitlists for each; the NASP program is spreading throughout the province at an increasing rate; and we anticipate our 2 millionth student in 2017. Also new in 2017 is the Pleasure Craft Operator Training program that will be available online in May of 2017, and is available in the classroom now.

Be sure to check the AHEIA website for updates to not only courses and educational offerings, but shoot dates and closures as well. Despite a challenging economy — perhaps because of it — AHEIA has become a go-to for more and more groups as a team building or fundraising locale. With an increasing number of groups booking the club, it is important to check the website or call 403-256-0665 before driving out to discover it is closed for a private event. Avoid disappointment and put www.AHEIA.com in your favourites today.

As we work together to further AHEIA’s mission of making wildlife and fish a part of people’s value systems, AHEIA is also focused on making the Calgary Firearms Centre — and all AHEIA centres — a welcoming environment for shooters old and new, from this area or visiting from afar, beginners or champions. As always, when introducing folks to the shooting sports, safety is our foremost concern. Please let us know how we are doing! It is AHEIA’s aim to make your visit to the centre the most enjoyable and fulfilling yet.

On behalf of all of us at AHEIA, welcome once again and all the best of luck in the 2017 shooting season.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Gruszecki, President.

• The following classification table will be used as a basis for all shoots other than the Provincial Championships:

Entries divid-ed equally into three purses, one for each 50. Each purse

divided 50%/30%/20% – percentage system.

Lewis ........................................ One class per seven shooters entered. A number of entries not evenly divisible by seven will be rounded to the nearest seven for the purpose of establishing the number of class-es. Maximum three classes in any event. Total purse divided equally among classes. Each class purse divided 60%/40% – percentage system.

50/50 Club Pots ................. 50/50 Club Pots are made up of three separate 50 straight purs-es in any 100 target handicap event. If more than one shooter breaks all of the targets in any 50, they will divide the 50%. Club Pots are progressive and will be carried over from one handicap event to the next, from one shoot to the next and from one year to the next. Entry fees paid at a shoot are added to pots after payoffs are calculated for the shoot.

Special Event ..................... Proceeds of all bids (less 10% retained by the Club as an administration fee) and shooter entry fee of $10.00 form the purse. Purse will be divided into one money per seven shoot-ers entered (rounded to the nearest seven) – hi-gun system. Shooter 25%, buyer 75%.

SAFETY

• The practice of tracking targets behind a shooting squad is unsafe, disconcert-ing to the shooters, and is not permitted.

• A gun, which for any reason fails to fire as intended, must be promptly opened without any subsequent determination by the referee/scorer of the cause of the failure to fire.

• Test shots will not be permitted under any circumstance.

• All guns must have the action opened and contain no live or empty shells at any time, except while the shooter is on the firing line. A break open gun may be closed when it is in a gun rack but it shall not contain a live or empty shell. A gun other than a break open gun must have the action open when it is in a gun rack and it shall not contain a live or empty shell.

• A shooter may place a live shell in his gun only when on a post facing the traps. In singles or handicap a shooter may place only one shell at a time in his gun. In Doubles a contestant may place two shells at a time in his gun. All live and empty shells must be removed from the gun before moving from one post to another. Snap caps or recoil reduction devices may be excluded from the fore-going only if colored a safety orange so as to permanently identify them as not being a live or empty shell. In changing from one post to another, the shooter will not walk in front of the other shooters.

• A shooter must not in any manner interfere with the preceding shooter by rais-ing his/her gun to point or otherwise create an observable distraction.

• Shooters are not permitted to shoot while seated in or otherwise using a golf cart on the firing line. Single passenger conveyances are the appropriate means for participating should one require assistance due to permanent or temporary disability.

• All guns must be equipped, fitted and used so as not to eject empty shells in a manner that substantially disturbs or interferes with other contestants.

• If a flag, orange pylon or stop sign appears on the traphouse, immediately unload your gun and wait until it is removed, indicating ready.

• Do not place your hand or any other part of your body over the muzzle of your gun. The practice of resting the muzzle of a shotgun on a shooter’s toe is discouraged.

• Do not point your gun in the direction of any person even though you know the gun is not loaded.

• Only target loads conforming to ATA specifications may be used.

11

• Each shooter must have his own gun while on the firing line. The practice of sharing a gun on the firing line is dangerous and will not be allowed.

• All adjustments of the trap machines will be done by authorized personnel only.

• All loading of trap machines will be done by authorized personnel only.

Dear fellow shooters;

It is my privilege once again to invite you all to the 2017 Alberta Provincial Trapshooting Championships. This year will mark the 67th anniversary of our shoot under the guidance of the APTA, the 31st time hosted by the scenic Calgary Firearms Centre, and the 97th recorded year of the Alberta Championships registered under the ATA. Benefiting from the success of the 2016 shoot, we are again offering $10,000 in Added Money, contributed by the Martin Family and the APTA. This year our shoot will continue toboast an excellent Six Class & Chair-shooter trophy package, and All-American Points across 1300 of the 1400 registered ATA targets.

This year we will also see three new inductees entered into the APTA Hall of Fame; Diane Peyton, Larry Ivany, and Trevor Dawe. Please join us Saturday evening as we recognize the achievements of these lifetime contributors at our Annual General Meeting.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the Canadian Trapshooting Associationback to Alberta for its annual National Tournament this year, being held at the EdmontonGun Club. Building on its attendance from last year, this shoot will be offering $6000 in Added Money, and All-American Points for 2017! Please visit “shootcanada.ca” for info.

It should be a terrific year for shooters across the Province this season! Please enjoy our updated record book, acknowledge our wonderful sponsors printed within, and we’ll see you on the line!

Sincerely,Trevor Kuhn, APTA President

Classification & HandicappingClassification will be based on official averages and known ability. In all cases, known ability will have a strong bearing on classification. The APTA reserves the authority to change the classification of any shooter at any time and the additional authority through proper channels with the ATA to make any yardage change they deem necessary. APTA Board of Directors are the Classification and Handicap Committee for this Shoot. Any shooter whose classification is not signed by an APTA Director will be disqualified. Shooters are required to have their 16-yard and doubles averages computed prior to registration. Shooters who present an average card without all targets recorded and/or without averages being calculated will not be classified until the card is completed.

Singles......A shooter who has less than 1000 total 16 yard targets registered for the current and previous two years will be assigned to “A” class or higher at the discretion of the APTA Director classifying the shooter.

Doubles....A shooter who has less than 1000 total doubles targets registered for the current and previous two years will be assigned to “A” class or higher at the discretion of the APTA Director classifying the shooter.

Handicap..Subject to ATA Rule Section VI 4 a. And b., A shooter will shoot his or her ATA or PITA yardage, whichever is the longest. It is the shooter's responsibility to notify the handicapper if he/she holds or has held a card of another trapshooting association during the current or preceding ATA target year. Male and Junior male shooters who have less than 1000 total Handicap targets registered for the current and previous two years will shoot from assigned yardage or average card yardage, whichever is longer. Assigned yardage will be no less than 23 yards. Lady, Junior female, Sub- Junior and Sr. Vet shooters who have less than 1000 total handicap targets registered for the current and previous two years will shoot from assigned yardage or average card yardage, whichever is longer. Assigned yardage will be no less than 20 yards.

Subject to penalty classification, the following classification table will be used for this tournament:

96% and Above92% and Under 96%89% and Under 92%86% and Under 89%82% and Under 86%Under 82%

Because All American points will be awarded at this tournament, shooters may declare only one category (I.e. Lady1, Lady 2, Sub-Junior, Junior, Junior Gold, Sub-Vet, Veteran, or Senior Veteran). Chair shooters are exempt from this rule. Category shooters listed above must declare their special category at the time of classification in order to be eligible for special category trophies. It is the responsibility of special categoryshooters to ensure that their special category has been noted on their entry form prior to cashiering for the first event entered.

Any Category Shooter who is tied for event Champion may shoot-off/carry over for the Championship Trophy. If a shooter fails in the trophy shoot-off/carry over and has declared a special category at the time of classification, the shooter will fall back to the declared category.

Any Category Shooter whose score qualifies for any trophy in their declared category, will compete for the category trophy and not for place, class or yardage group. If there is no Event Champion Trophy, the category shooter will take the Category Trophy and may not fall back to Class.

Any Category Shooter whose score does not qualify for a trophy in their category, may compete for place, class, or yardage group trophies. Once declarations of Category have been made by the shooter or shootmanagement, the declaration is final and cannot be changed. There shall be no exception to this rule.

One Hit! One Shot! One Victory!

The DT11 is Beretta’s top-of-the-line competition shotgun, used by the world’s absolute best clay shooters. It is built around a vault-tough cross-bolt action, a whole 3mm wider than its predecessor’s (the DT10) and therefore stronger and even more durable. The trigger has a truly custom feel, breaking at a crisp 3 ½ lbs--which minimizes muscular interference with your swing and results in many more broken targets. The center-mass of the DT11 is designed to be low and coaxial with the bottom barrel, giving this shotgun unmatched stability and greatly reducing muzzle rise. And with its premium-grade Steelium-Pro barrels and high-grade stock that can be tailored to the customer’s specifications, the DT11 was born and bred to keep the serious competitor on target and on the podium.

Dear fellow shooters;

For more than a century trapshooting has been in Alberta, with many famous Albertans contributing to thesport along the way. We have endeavored to record and capture as many notable achievements as possible, datingback to its inception and beyond. Though we try to recognize and verify the correctness of these amazing feats, many accomplishments have gone unrecorded, incorrect or simply lost through the passage of time, such as manyof our older perpetual Provincial trophies.

This record is kept for the shooters, and the onus is on those listed to help ensure the information is accurate. Enjoythe work that has been remembered, and share with all. Where any items may be absent, or errors present, please contact the APTA secretary so they may be added or corrected. Please visit our online Hall of Fame, where theserecords and more can be found about our history at the “aptahof.com”.

Sincerely,Trevor Kuhn

The APTA would like to thank the ATA and Trap & Field for assisting in rebuilding and maintaining our Provincial Archives
