1 Alderley District Information Bulletin September 2010 Another year of Scouting starts! Welcome back! I hope you have had a good summer; spent time with your families, been on camp and generally enjoyed the break. I am sure that those of you who attended Chamboree will agree that it was a fantastic event. Yes there were a few problems and some things could have worked better but overall it was great. Thanks to the organising team for all their efforts and our leaders and parents for ensuring Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from Alderley had a great time! I did my DC bit by presenting two Gold Chief Scout Awards to Michael Leech and George Pickering (1 st Chelford) and his last Cub Proficiency badge to Jake Windram from Alderley Edge (see report later in DIB). Whilst I was there Handforth / Alderley Edge were awarded 3 rd prize and 6 th /4 th won first prize in the gateway competition. Well done. Whilst I was having coffee with Holmes Chapel I was regaled with the “tick incident”. One Scout got a tick just under his eye – visit to A&E required! (It wouldn’t be camp without a visit to a hospital, would it?) My Chamboree highlights would be meeting a Thai Scout whose granddad attended one of the early Woodbadge Courses. County Appointments

ACC Activities

Rob Patheyjohns our current ACC Activities decided to stand down earlier in the year but agreedto continue in post until a successor was appointed. Rob, I’m delighted to report, will continue tosupport activities in the County and his expertise will be valuable moving forward.

I am delighted to announce that Graham Shaw has agreed to take this role. Graham will now play aleading role in shaping the provision of activities within the County and helping me develop astrategy to support the provision of activities within the County, Districts and Groups.

[email protected]

ACC Explorer Scouts

Graham Shaw’s change in role has created a vacancy for a new ACC Explorer Scouts. I am mostgrateful for the effort Graham has put into this post and equally delighted to announce that the newACC Explorer Scouts will be Hannah Lapworth. Hannah will bring a fresh perspective to theExplorer Scout section and will work closely with the ACC Scouts and Scout NetworkCommissioner to develop strategies aimed at retaining members as they move through the sections. In addition she will be looking at ways to build capacity so that the section is able to accept newmembers with little scouting experience.

[email protected]

These appointments will take effect on Monday 20 September and there will now be a “hand over”period.

I’m sure that you join me in wishing both Graham and Hannah well in their new roles.

5th Wilmslow Beavers

During the summer half term 5th Wilmslow Beavers have been working towards their OutdoorChallenge Award. A walk from the Carrs up to Styal, and three weeks at Lindow Common haveprovided a fun and varied end to the Summer Term. We were very lucky, and had four weeks offantastic weather which allowed us to do activities, such as practicing our trailing skills, seeinghow many things we could fit in a match box and finally going on a treasure hunt! A huge thanksmust go to Judith Simpson, Derek Wiles and Simon Taylor for their help this term – allowing us tomake our visits.

In the final week of term we held an investiture ceremony at Lindow Common – welcoming ourtwo newest members into the colony and into Scouting. 5th Wilmslow Beavers have had a verysuccessful two terms, and all the members are looking forward to coming back in September.

1st Handforth Beavers Abseil at Tegg's Nose Country Park – Saturday 22nd May 2010

13 Beavers took part in the Abseiling which goes towards their Adventure Activity and OutdoorChallenge Badges. Many thanks goes to Adam Robson at the Viking Explorer Scout Unit formaking the activity possible along with Mark an ACSL who used to work alongside me when Iwas once an Akela.

It was a hot day as you can see by the pictures they almost look like we are abroad. Parents camealong with their cameras and packed lunches. The pictures show the scale of the rock and just howcourageous the Beavers were.

When the first Beaver abseiled down it was very emotional for all of us to see such a small childaccomplish such a task, a moment I will never forget. I am so proud of them all but it wasn't justthe Beavers that enjoyed the event the Dads & one Mum couldn't wait to put a harness on and havea go and they did, along with the Leaders & helpers including our ABSL Mr 'B' who is nearly 75years old!

We have also had our first Sleepover. 21 Beavers took part. We had a Pirate Theme and everyonehad a great time.

I would like to say a warm welcome to Fred Wedin who has come on board as an Assistant BeaverLeader.

We joined 4th and 6th Wilmslow Scouts for lunch along with 6th Wilmslow Beavers. I would like tothank everyone who helped us have a wonderful day, starting with Conrad and Janice Jones whowere my parents that helped me for the day, also Mark Toombs, Ian Ross and their team of leadersfor looking after and feeding us for the day.

Many thanksJackie Toombs, BSL4th Wilmslow

Survival Skills Weekend

A weekend leading to the Survival Skills Badge is to be run at Tidnock Wood on Saturday 25th

and Sunday 26th September.Scouts should arrive between 12noon and 2pm on the Saturday and leave around 3pm on theSunday. Each Troop should prepare their Scouts using part 1 of the badge syllabus.

The weekend is intended to cover the practicalities of the badge, test the first aid requirements andsee how well Scouts can cook on wood without utensils or foil.Troops do their own catering and share the badge testing.

A suggested outline of the menu for the weekend and draft permission to camp form is availableelectronically from Ian Ross on [email protected]

On the weekend, we plan to have experts on survival techniques and on “food for free” to showScouts and Leaders what can be achieved.

If you plan to bring some Scouts to the event, please tell Ian Ross on or before the Forum on 22September.

Alderley Edge Scout Group

Alderley Edge Scout Group will be celebrating its centenary from December 2010 and 10 year oldJake Windram has clearly made his mark in history. Jake’s dedication has enabled him to achieveall the Cub badges on offer consisting of Sixer and Seconder, 33 activity badges, 6 staged activitybadges, 7 challenge badges and his Chief Scout Silver award.

Steve Buckley with Jake Windram

Jake was presented with his award by District Commissioner, Steve Buckley during Chamboree2010 in Tabley. Steve told the Cubs that "very rarely does anyone achieve all the badges. It takes alot of effort and commitment and Jake should be very proud of himself".Jake’s determination along with the support from the leaders has enabled the group to sample allthe different activities on offer in scouting. We hope that this achievement will encourage others tofollow while we celebrate our Group’s centenary followed by our District Centenary in 2012.

For Chamboree we made wooden shields and wooden woggles, this counted towards their DIYbadges. It looked fantastic watching them all walk into the main arena with the items they hadmade.

With so many activity / badges on offer its great hearing what the cubs have been up to away fromthe Scout Hut. The badges give everyone a chance to shine, to learn something new or to build onexperiences they already have.

However, December will also be a sad time for us as our Scout leader Margaret Woodall will beretiring after a long service with us. With so much on offer over the next two years our Scoutsection urgently needs your support.

We already have a healthy Beaver section which started this year as well as a strong Cub section.Without Scouts these children would be lost to other groups or pack up completely.

Interested! Can you help! Come and join our team of volunteers and ensure the section stays open. Our existing team will help and support all new members but it would be too much to expect themto take on additional roles. The role can be as little or as much as you want and is very rewarding. Please help and ensure our Scouts get the opportunities that children like Jake have alreadyexperienced. If you feel you can help please contact us through our website.

On Friday 27th August 2010, 8 band members and 2 leaders descended on Tidnock Wood to attendthe now annual Band Summer Camp. Being in the band is often hard work, but members, andleaders, use this opportunity to wind down and have some fun.

The weekend took the form of a competition – fiercely fought between Red Team and Blue Team.Teams took part in wide games and other activities to gain points, with additional points beingawarded for helpfulness and things like collecting the best wood for the fire. The teams also had tocomplete four challenges. Challenge One involved them planning and preparing a meal forthemselves and two adults. Challenge Two was to plan and run an hour’s worth of activities.Challenge Three was to plan and run 2 sessions of half an hour worth of banding activity – it wasmuch more difficult than they thought!! And Challenge Four was to prepare three “entertainments”for around the campfire, which varied from games such as Pictionary to a newly arranged versionof one of the band tunes, mixed with Yankee Doodle and Old MacDonald. Although it wassometimes very wet and very cold all band members enjoyed themselves, and seem keen to repeatthe experience next year!

We would especially like to thank Holmes Chapel Scout Group for the kind loan of theirequipment – currently we have no camping equipment of our own and without the generosity ofHolmes Chapel, the camp would not have been possible. We would also like to thank Ian Hewittfor attending the camp and helping us out – and also providing us with the funniest moment ofcamp.

Several Leaders from Alderley took advantage of training opportunities available at Chamboree. As a result we now have a number of people close to completing their Wood Badge.

The latest list of courses is attached. Coming up soon is the module weekend covering modules 5-9 over the weekend of 2nd/3rd October. This is a great way to achieve a lot in a relatively shorttime. Bookings can be for the full weekend (10am - 4pm each day) or just one of the days.

Over the weekend of 9th/10th October a course is planned to cover the modules for Managers.

A Safeguarding workshop is planned for 17th November. This is a compulsory part of module 1for all new adult members and is also a requirement for an appointment renewal.

At the end of the summer term I always have a party for the Beavers, younger siblings, potentialBeavers or their friends.

In the past we have had a beach party where we made surfboards out of cardboard beforehand, apirate party etc. This year was targets where we had bowling, inflatable darts, catapulting, plasticand tin cans, hoopla frogs and many other activities.

9

The Beavers bring enough food for six people of crisps, biscuits or cake. This year we had a recordnumber of 17 extra.

We had extra help from parents and those with food allergies bring their own, keeping those withallergies to one end so that there was no mix up.

We start the evening getting everyone’s contact details, then splitting them up for the activities. They then move round the room having 5 minutes on each activity until they have all had a turn ateverything. They then wash their hands and eat.

After they have finished eating and having orange or blackcurrant from drinks fountains we played‘Captains Coming’ and ended the night with a sing song of ‘Head Shoulders Knees and Toes’

I do let them know it is not like this every week, but do explain some of what we do over the year.
