Tell your Mentor what you expect fromhim/her. You may want your mentor tooffer advice on subjects such as continuingeducation or simply help networking andmaking connections.

Have clear goals., Mentorship goals are fordescribing the work you want to do withyour Mentor. Setting goals is a great wayto give your Mentor insight into what youwant out of the Mentorship. Also, if youknow what you want and are able to clearlystate it, then the chances of achievement isgreater.

Bring ideas to the table. Don't expect yourMentor to do your work.

You are expected to use the timewith your Mentor wisely. If youdo not and the Mentor feels theirtime is being wasted, they canterminate the arrangement.

The Mentee is expected to ''drive''the relationship:

You set the objectives and groundrules of the mentorship such asfrequency and duration of meetingsas well as key topics.

You create the meetings andhonour the set meeting times (ormake alternate arrangements whennecessary).

    You come prepared.

    You do the work.

Mentees should show an eagernessto succeed and respect theirMentor's guidance.

It is reasonable for your Mentor toexpect to see improvement overthe course of the Mentorship

While a Mentor is expected to findways to help their Mentee achievetheir goals, they are not thesource of all information andtraining. Mentors can suggesttraining classes, books or evenother Mentors if appropriate.

The Mentor should be on time forscheduled 1:1s (or make alternatearrangements)

    They provide guidance and support.

    They share best practices.

    They offer encouragement.

    They help you help yourself

The Mentor should be mostlyaccessible to you (as long as itdoesn't interfere with their job)

If you cannot make a meeting, youshould inform your mentor in

advance. It is okay to '''reschedule'''

1 or 2 meetings however if you findyourself needing to reschedule often, work with your mentor to find a different time

of day, day of week or frequency for your meetingsthat better suits your schedule and avoids conflicts.

If the Mentor consistently cancels/misses 1:1s

It is okay to miss 3 meetings each mentorshipcycle.

If a mentor misses more than 3 meetings you havethe right to terminate the mentorship and request a

    new mentor.

If you do not show up for 2 or more scheduled meetingswithout giving the mentor advance notice, the mentor has theright to terminate the mentorship.

If the problem persists into 2 mentorships: Your ability to geta mentor is in jeopardy. Each case will be analyzedseparately.

If the problem persists into 3 mentorships: Notification will besent to your manager and you will no longer be allowed toenroll for a mentor.

    If a Mentee consistently cancels/misses 1:1s

    1. Start by making a list of potentialmentors. Your immediate team is agood starting point, but you'reprobably already getting mentoringfrom them to some degree. Weencourage you to expand your searchto include people in other areas of the

company that you find interesting orvaluable. Consider all possibilitieswhen it comes to mentors. Someoneyou may not have initially thought ofmay turn out to be the ideal mentor toget you moving in the direction you'dlike to go. Further, getting out of yourcomfort zone will help stimulate yourgrowth.

    2. Clearly outline what you want a

mentor for. Ideally you should have1-5 goals to work on with a Mentor.

    3. When the time comes to actually asksomeone to mentor you, explain whyyou selected the person as a potentialmentor and how you would like theperson to help you. Remember, asking someone to be a mentor isessentially asking them to give uptheir time and energy for the

development of your career. You'llneed to sell them on why they shouldspend time with you as opposed tosomeone else.

    4. If the person you ask turns you down, don't take it personally. They mostlylikely have reasons that would standin the way of being a good mentor.Move on to the next person on yourlist of possible mentors.
