The “Slipped Disc”. Is your back at risk?

Essentially the discs are the shock absorbers of the back. They are like spongy pads between the vertebrae cushioning the bones from one another. Like many things they are superb until they go wrong. Exploding the mythBefore all else it is important to realise that discs do not actually slip. They prolapse, herniate, degenerate, sequestrate and do all manner of other weird and wonderful things, but they do not slip. They are too well tethered above and below to the adjacent vertebrae for this to happen. What are the symptoms?Back pain, often with leg pain, loss of mobility, difficulty sitting and driving, pain on coughing or straining, even a distorted posture are all potential symptoms of disc trouble. Unfortunately, once injured, discs are very slow to recover largely due to having a very poor blood supply. Most of their nutrition is from passive absorption from the surrounding tissues during rest. Adequate rest is often important for recovery. What causes it and who is at risk?It isn’t always a single injury that gives rise to disc

problems. Discs will often gradually break down. The obvious risk factors are history of compressive trauma (such as heavy parachute landing), prolonged heavy lifting or being very overweight. Too much extreme exercise and conversely, too little exercise both increase the risk. Genetic factors play a hugely significant part too. Smoking is also surprisingly bad for discs. Microscopic damage to the smokers’ blood vessels leads to reduced nutrition to the discs. In summary, disc problems should not be looked at in isolation. They are more of a general lifestyle issue.Interesting triviaEven time lords can suffer prolapsed discs. In

2008 Dr Who star David Tennant suffered a disc injury so severe that it required surgery. The

damage was apparently bad enough to be beyond the scope even of the legendary sonic screwdriver!
