Welcome to the October edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.It’sbeenagoodyearaccordingtomanylocalapplefarmers,withbumpercropsoffine,juicyapplies.Allaroundourarea,inorchardsoldandnew,inbackgardensandpokingoutofhedgerows,aretreesburstingwithfruit.Traditionallythishasbeenaprimeareaforgrowingapplesandotherfruits,indeedatonetimetherewasquitealocalindustrybuiltuparoundit.Laterthismonththerearetwolocaleventstocelebratethisheritage-thefirstatWestonsCiderinMuchMarcle,theotherinColwall.Apartfromthefunandgamestherewillalsobethechanceatdifferenteventstopressyourownapplejuice,andsamplecider.Anditsnotjustaboutentertainment,inherregularcolumnAllisonMaxwelltellsusaboutthebenefitsofeatinglocalproduce,freshlyharvestedandinseason.Asweheadintoautumnthere’sstillsomuchtodo,thismonths’‘What’sOn’listingispositivelyburstingwithideastomakethemostofOctober.Whateveryougetup,enjoy!

The Big DrawThis month, a huge art project spanning twenty countries and five continents is coming to Cradley. Launched ten years ago, the idea is simple. Anyone, from professional

artist to school child creates a picture on a blank postcard-sized piece of paper. The results are sold or auctioned and

the money raised goes to a locally based charity.

ItscalledTheBigDraw,anditusesarttobringvisitorstomuseumandgallerycollectionsaswellasbringthemintocontactwithurbanandruralspaces,innewandenjoyableways.It’saimistoincludeeverybody,especiallythosewholovetodrawandthosewhothinktheycan’t.SueLimfromtheBlueGingerArtGalleryisrunningthelocaleventthisyear,andisaskingcustomers,artists,schoolchildren,infactanybodyatalltosubmitpostcardsizedportraitsofaperson,ananimalorafantasticalcreature.EntrieswillbeexhibitedonthegallerywallsandwillthenbeauctionedofftoraisemoneyfortheAcornsChildren’sHospiceinWorcester.“Lastyearweaskedforportraitsofpets’saysSue,‘andweweredelightedtohavenearly500piecesoforiginalartworkwhichweredonatedforsale.Intheendweraisedover£700forAcornsChildren’sHospice.Thisyearweaimtogetmorepeopledrawingandraiseevenmoremoney.”PostcardPortraitsneedtobesubmittedtoSueattheGallerybeforeSunday10thOctober.AllthedrawingswillthenbedisplayedtherefromWednesday13thOctoberuntilSunday24th.Localschoolsaregetting

involvedtoo,childrenwillbeencouragedtogetouttheirpencilsandpaintstocreateoriginalartworkthatwillformpartofthegallery’sexhibition.‘Manylocalandprofessionalartistshavealsobeenaskedtojoinin,sothereshouldbeafantasticvarietyofworkondisplay’saysSue.TheeventculminatesinanafternoonsaleandauctionofthepicturesonSunday24thOctober,afreeeventwithfreeteaorcoffeeandcakes.SomeonefromtheAcornsHospicewillalsobetheretoexplainmoreabouttheirworkandhowthemoneyraisedwillhelpthem.TheBigDrawisorganisedbyanindependentcharitycalledTheCampaignforDrawingwhoseaimistoraisetheprofileofdrawingasatoolforthoughtandcreativity.Itslong-termambitionistochangethewaydrawingisperceivedbyboththepublicandtheeducationsystem.Sinceitstartedit’sbeensupportedbysomeleadingfiguresintheworldofthecreativeindustriesandinart,architectureanddesigncolleges.Thecharitysaysitsworkwillbefinishedwhenthewords‘Ican’tdraw’aredroppedfromourvocabulary!
