    OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

    IN CHILDREN

Its normal for some kids to stopbreathing very briefly in their sleep.Breathing that stops for 20 secondsor more, however, can mean that achild has obstructive sleep apnea. Ifyou notice your child snoring, gasp-ing for air, or having labored breath-ing during sleep, he or she mayhave sleep apnea. Other symptomsinclude restless sleep, sleeping in

unusual positions, or changes in skincolor. Enlarged tonsils or adenoidsare common causes of obstructivesleep apnea. The condition can betreated with either surgery (removalof the tonsils and/or adenoids) orwith a breathing machine the childwears over his or her nose. Sincethere are more serious forms of ap-nea, it is important to have your childevaluated.

We might think of pregnancy as being 9 months long, but it is actually 42

weeks. A baby is considered full-term any time between 37 and 41 weeks.

Doctors usually calculate the due date by counting 40 weeks past the first

day of a womans last period. The only problem with this method is that

many women dont realize that they are pregnant until they are a month or

more along. By that time, it is too difficult to pinpoint the exact date that a

woman began her last cycle; therefore, a guess is made. To complicate the

matter further, not all women have regular menstrual cycles. With this mind,

many doctors recommend an ultrasound to determine the due date.

Exceptional prenatal care is important for both mother and child. At, our

practice we care about your health and delivering healthy babies. When

you require personalized, caring gynecological and obstetrical care, contact

WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A at 940-626-8008. Our

office is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur.

    New patients are welcome.

Wishing everyone a healthy and prosperousNew Year.

The earlier a pregnant woman gets an ultrasound (which measures the size ofthe uterus and the fetus), the more accurate the predicted due date will be.

The 10th annual WiseCounty Christmas BirdCount was on a cold, windy

day this year. That didntstop us from seeing lots of

good birds! Unfortunately,it was more quality than

quantity. Although we sawseveral rare species, all

groups noted low numbersof all birds, from cardinalsto sparrows to ducks.

My group included KathySaucier, Charles Randklev,

en Lundeen and my mom.The bird count is based on a15-mile diameter circle. We

drove the roads and hikedon the LBJ National Grass-

lands in the northeasternsection of the count area. The

morning started well withsmall flocks of sparrows andcardinals along the roadside

    near Greenwood.While driving down Farm

oad 730, I thought I saw awoodpecker on a dead tree

by the road. We safely pulledoff and looked back. It wasan immature Red-headed

Woodpecker! These are year-round residents in our area,

but they have been less com-mon and are listed on the

Audubon Society WatchListas a declining and vulner-able species (http://web1.

    audubon.org/science/spe-cies/watchlist/). The imma-

ture is mostly brown, withwhite wing patches (like the

adults white wing patches). This individual had some

red feathers starting toshow on its head.

On top of a hill, also along

the highway, another birdcaught our collective eyes.

This time it was a smallhawk. After scrutinizing itfor a moment, we learned

that it was a Merlin. Thissmall gray falcon is a rare

winter visitor here. Usuallywe only see a few each win-

ter. It was formerly called thepigeon hawk, much in thesame way that the American

    estrel is colloquially calledsparrow hawk.

On Decatur Road nearnit 71 of the LBJ National

Grasslands, we encountereda big flock of American Rob-ins, Cedar Waxwings and

astern Bluebirds. Theywere feeding on the blue-

berries of cedar trees. Whileadmiring and attempting to

estimate the many berry-eating birds, I was shockedto see a rosy-pink bird: a

male Purple Finch! I hadntseen one of them since the

winter of 2004-05. Theselovely finches are irregular

winter visitors in our area.We got out of the car on

nit 71 to hike down intothe woods. It was cold andwindy, and we did not find

much for our efforts. Wehad hoped to see kinglets

or creepers in the tall treesalong a ravine, but it was sowindy that even if they were

    present, we could not have

    heard their distinctive high,thin calls.

Mom, Kathy and I con-tinued birding after a longlunch.

We watched some feederbirds near Greenwood and

had a hard time motivat-ing ourselves to get out of

the house back into the cold.Harriss and White-crowned

Sparrows were search-ing busily for seeds on theground, while cute little

American Goldfinches ateabove at the feeders.

We walked through thewoods but were quicklydriven back inside by bit-

ing winds. We drove to thenorthern edge of our count

section and found someVesper Sparrows out on the

high prairie, but it was oth-

erwise very quiet out. Ruck-ers Pond (Unit 55 on the

    LBJ National Grasslands)yielded several Pied-billedGrebes.

As the afternoon pro-gressed, we sawfewer and

fewer birds, and it was get-ting late, so we called it

quits for the day.Even though it wasnt the

most pleasant day, weather-wise to be out, we collected valuable data that will be

compiled and analyzed todiscover trends in bird pop-

ulations across the country. Its fun, too, to have a good

    excuse to watch birds all

day long. Whether drivingaround the county search-

ing for birds or sitting inyour warm house watch-

    ing the feeders, keep your

eyes peeled. You never knowwhat exciting birds you may

    find!

The next monthly fieldtrips on the Lyndon B. John-

son National Grasslandswill be Feb. 7. We will depart

at 9 a.m. from the ForestService District Office in De-

6 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, January 10, 2008

    Dear Savvy Senior,

Can you give me some in-

ormation on the type of se-

    nior housing that offers all

    levels of care, from indepen-

    dent living to nursing home

care? My husband and I are

both in our 70s and are look-ing to downsize from our cur-

ent home, but we want our

next move to be our last.

    One Move Mary

    Dear Mary,

If you want your nextmove to be your final one, acontinuing-care retirementcommunity (CCRC) may beust what youre looking for -

but theyre not cheap. Hereswhat you should know.

    CCRCs

Also known as life-carecommunities, CCRCs aredifferent from other senior

housing options becausethey offer a long-term con-tract that provides all levelsof housing, services and carein one convenient location.

While CCRCs vary greatlyin appearance and services, most offer apartment or one-story independent living, plus common rooms, din-ing hall, exercise facilities, transportation, housekeep-ing and various social andrecreational activities. Moreimportantly, they also offeron-site assisted living (help

with bathing, dressing, eat-ing, etc.) and skilled nurs-ing care, so residents can bemonitored and cared for iftheir health falters.

    Expensive Option

    CCRCs are a pricey propo-

sition. Most communitiesrequire a hefty buy-in, or en-trance fee which can rangeanywhere from $10,000 to$500,000 or more. In addi-tion, you also pay month-ly service fees thereafterwhich will vary ($500 to over$5,000) depending on the fa-cility, services and the long-term care contract optionyou choose. (Note: Be sure tohave your financial adviseror attorney review the con-tract.)

    What to Know

    With about 4,000 CCRCs

in operation, how do you findthe right fit? Because thereare no federal regulations onhow they need to be run, youneed to carefully researchthe communities you're con-sidering. Here are some ar-eas to investigate:Fees: Find out how much

of your entry fee is refund-able to you if you decideto move, or to your estatewhen you die. Inquire aboutcontract specifics and costs. What kinds of services areincluded and what costs ex-

tra? What kind of yearly costincreases can you expect?

And if you have long-termcare insurance, can it beused to pay for assisted liv-ing or nursing home care? Management: Obtain a

copy of their financial his-tory for review, and find outhow long theyve been inbusiness. Also, see if they areaccredited with the Continu-ing Care Accreditation Com-mission (see www.carf.org),which evaluates both thecare and financial strengthof the community. (Note:CCRC accreditation is volun-tary so many good communi-ties may not be accredited.)

Also check with your stateslong-term-care ombudsmanat www.ltcombudsman.org.This site provides resources

to help you research the as-sisted living and nursingcare units within the CCRC. Facility: Take a tour of

the CCRCs youre interestedin and make sure theyrecapable of providing the ser-

vices and care you expect ata price you can afford. Whileyoure there notice the up-keep, cleanness and safety ofthe facility. Was it homey andinviting? Did the staff seemfriendly and knowledgeable?

Also be sure to eat a meal inthe dining room, check out

the various activities offeredand spend some time visitingwith the current residents. Long-term care: It's the

long-term care services thatset CCRCs apart from otherretirement communities, so

be sure you check out theassisted living and nursinghome side when you tour thefacilities. Again, check forcleanliness and notice if thestaff is responsive and kindto its residents. Find outabout staff screening andtraining procedures, whatthe staff turnover rate is andhow many residents eachstaff member has to care for?

Also, see if they are equippedto care for patients with Al-zheimers disease. And, findout what happens if there'sno assisted living or nursing

home bed available whenyou need one.Savvy Tips: To find a

CCRC, contact the areaagency on aging (call 800-677-1116 to get the number)in the location youre inter-ested in and ask for a listingand recommendations. Alsosee www.ccrcdata.org whereyou can order state or region-al CCRC directories for $25.

And for more information onhow to choose a CCRC, visitwww.carf.org, also see www.carepathways.com/checklist-

    ccrc.cfm.

The past few weeks I'vead some questions regard-

ing the status of premisesegistration, so I will at-empt to update you live-

stock owners in today's col-mn.First and foremost, prem-

ses registration is voluntary.ou can choose to partici-

pate or choose not to regis-ter your premises. Your vol-untary participation meansyou will be notified quicklywhen a disease outbreak orother animal health eventmight put your animals atrisk. Choosing to registeryour premises is an easyway to protect your invest-ment and your neighbors. If

you choose to register, yourpremises will be assigned

a unique Premises Identi-fication Number (PIN) thatcorresponds to the contactinformation you voluntarilyprovide.

Before you make your de-cision, there are a few im-portant points to consider:Number one, premises reg-istration is free. Second, the process is quick you

simply fill out a short formwith your contact informa-

tion. Third, choosing to reg-ister your premises does notrequire you to participatein the Animal Identificationand Animal Tracing Compo-nent of NAIS. Finally, USDAmaintains limited premisesinformation and will protectyour private informationfrom disclosure.

    Depending on your situ-
