ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, September 11, 2008

    BY NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil : I was success-ul in bringing my bougain-

villea through last winter. Its full and healthy looking, but no colorful leaves only

reen. What can I do to get itto bloom?

First of all, good for youfor remembering that whatmany people call owerswith bougainvilleas are ac-tually colorful foliar bracts. The tubular creamy whiteblooms are within the clus-ters of bracts. As to youranswer, this is the norm for

bougainvilleas during theTexas summertime. Yourplant will probably kickback into ower sometimethis fall. Keep it somewhatrootbound, and avoid nitro-gen plant foods. Bougainvil-leas normally ower comingout of winter and summerdormant periods.

Dear Neil : I put weed-

and-feed fertilizer on mylawn a few weeks ago, whenit was fairly hot and dry. I had a little left over, so I putit under a row of euonymusshrubs. Now theyre brown-ing and I think theyre dy-ing. They also seem to haveaphids on their leaves. Arethey dying because of theweedkiller, the drought orthe aphids?

Absolutely because of theweedkiller. Weed-and-feedfertilizers are very damagingwhen theyre applied aroundthe wrong plants. Only timewill tell whether the plantsmight survive. Keep themmoist in the meantime tokeep the herbicide from be-coming super-concentrated.As to the aphids, you prob-

ably have euonymus scale.ook it up online to see if itmatches. Horticultural oilsprays and systemic insecti-cides are your best controls.

    Dear Neil : Will weedkill-

ers hurt squirrels that dig inthe same ground?

It is very unlikely. Manu-facturers are required, dur-ing labeling of their prod-ucts, to prove that they willnot harm pets and wildlife. As a general rule, herbicidesare of very low toxicity any-

way. Read the label direc-tions. If there is a problem,it will be stated.

Dear Neil : Could the roots

of an oak tree be pushing mydriveway up? That side isswelling out of the ground. What can I do to correct it?

That happens all the timewhen we plant trees tooclose to walks, patios, drivesand even foundations. Ide-ally, your tree should be 10or more feet away from thepavement. In October orNovember, once the hottestweather has passed, you cancut the offending root some-where halfway between thetrunk and the concrete. Digan 18-inch trench perpendic-ular to the root, and install aroot-barrier fabric from your

nursery to stop further un-wanted root growth that di-rection.

    Dear Neil : I have a red

oak growing in my back yard. Its trunk is approxi-mately 4 inches in diameter. When should I transplant it,and how far out should I ex-cavate around it? Should I hire a professional?

The soil ball for a 4-inchdiameter red oak tree willbe 45 to 48 inches in diam-eter, and it will weigh manyhundreds of pounds. Its def-initely a job to be left to thepros. Your local nurserymanwill have suggestions of lo-cal tree diggers you coulduse. Winter is the time to dothe transplanting. A tree of that size can denitely be

moved successfully, but youprobably should have thecompany do some root-prun-ing now to help it get a goodroot system reestablished.

Dear Neil : I have three

gardenia plants that I grew from my mothers yard in Arkansas. Ive had a terrible problem with whiteies, butsoap and water have keptthem down. However, now a

fungus seems to be invading(see samples). What can I doto save them?

Soapy water wont domuch to help with white-ies. Use a systemic insec-ticide, or, if youre adverseto them, a horticultural oilspray will do a reasonable

job. The black sooty moldgrows in the sticky hon-

eydew extraction from thewhiteies. Controlling themwill, in turn, control it.

    Dear Neil : When should

I transplant an avocado tree from a pot into the ground?

If you have property ina frost-free region you canplant it outside at almostany season. However, be-cause they will not toleratefreezing conditions, almostall Texas gardeners areforced to leave them in pots.

Dear Neil : I have tried

2,4-d to control several typesof broadleafed weeds, but ithasnt worked. Ive enclosedsamples.

You included dichondraand another very smallweed that was impossible

to identify. You used the cor-rect material. I would sug-gest spraying it mid-pointbetween lawn mowings. Usea pump sprayer that allows

very precise application. In-clude one or two drops of aliquid dishwashing deter-gent to help hold the sprayon the leaves, and dontwater for at least 48 hoursafter you treat. Be patient. It sometimes takes 10 to 15days to see good results.

There is concern that the incidence of strokes has tripled amongmiddle-aged women during recent years. While most strokes occuramong people older than the 35- to 54-year-old age group studied, the increase in middle-aged female stroke victims is alarming due tothe reasons behind the increase. The fact is that the spike in strokesamong middle-aged women has increased despite the fact that morewomen in the recent survey were on medications that control theirblood pressure and cholesterol (both of which are factors in stroke). While other traditional factors such as smoking, heart disease, ordiabetes have changed signicantly in recent years, researchers notethat womens waistlines are nearly two inches larger than they were

    a decade ago.

at some tailgateips offered bySDAs Food Safe-

    ty and Inspection Service(FSIS).

Foods like chili or stewcan be kept hot with an in-sulated container.

To ensure the food stayshot, rst ll the containerwith boiling water, let stand

    for a few minutes, empty,

and then put in the pipinghot food. Keep the insulatedcontainer closed to keep thefood hot (140 F or above)for several hours.

Plan ahead and chill thefood in your refrig-erator before pack-ing for your tail-gate. Carry all coldperishable foods, including potato orpasta salads, lun-cheon meats, rawhamburger patties, and cooked meat orchicken in an insu-lated cooler packedwith several inchesof ice, frozen gel

    packs or containers of frozenwater.

Wrap raw meat and poul-try securely to prevent their

juices from cross contami-nating ready-to-eat foods.

Pack clean, wet, disposablecloths or moist towelettes

    and paper towels for clean-

ing hands and surfaces.Be sure to pack along wa-

ter for cleaning up.Meat and poultry cooked

on a grill often browns veryfast on the outside, so checkusing a food thermometerto be sure they are cookedthoroughly.

Cook hamburgers, sau-sage and all cuts of pork to160F. For taste as well assafety, FSIS recommendscooking poultry breast meatto 170F and dark meat to180F.

Beef, veal and lamb steaksand roasts may be safelycooked to 145F for mediumrare. It is best to avoid par-tially cooking food ahead of time, which allows bacteriato multiply to the point thatsubsequent cooking cannotdestroy them.

If bringing hot take-outfood, eat it within two hoursof purchase.

    Holding food at an un-

safe temperature is a primecause of foodborne illness.Food should not be left outof the cooler or off the grillfor more than two hours(one hour when the outsidetemperature is above 90F).

    Cook only the amount of

food that will be eaten toavoid the challenge of keep-ing leftovers at a safe tem-perature.

Remember to discard anyleftovers that are not icecold after the game.

    Following this game plan

is sure to reach the goal of preventing foodborne ill-ness.
