A MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR I mentioned in last week’s column that the up-coming Council meeting had a busy agenda. Last Tuesday evening saw around 150 people attend the meeting in the Mona Vale Memorial Hall. Over half were there to hear the debate about the Council paper to defer going to tender on the District Park leases and to carry out a review of the Northern Beaches golf courses as part of developing a 15 year plan for sporting facilities. The recommendation to do so was adopted. Both sides of the argument were well presented and their respective supporters were respectful of each other’s positions. Everyone listening to the discussion would agree both sides have legitimate concerns. I encouraged everyone interested to let Council know their views and undertook to produce a discussion document in November. The other item that drew a crowd was the proposal to release the Mona Vale Place Plan for public exhibition. Pittwater Council had spent considerable time and effort with extensive community engagement as part of the process, something that was widely acknowledged by the speakers, all of who supported the plan’s release. The Plan is about creating a centre that is less dominated by cars, that has a vibrant night-time economy and that provides more affordable housing, particularly for younger people currently priced out of both the ownership and rental markets. You can view the plan online at pittwater.nsw.gov.au or view a copy at Council’s Mona Vale Office Customer Service Centre in Village Park, Mona Vale. It is on exhibition until Sunday 13 November and there will be a public meeting for those interested on Monday 31 October, from 6 - 8pm, at Memorial Hall in Park Street. There will be informal info sessions at Mona Vale Library Laneway on 5 October, 14 October and 29 October from 10am - 2pm and also at the 6 November Mona Vale Market Day from 10am - 4pm. I mentioned in a previous column that over 500 people had nominated to assist Council make a start on developing our first Community Strategic Plan. Most of the 150 selected to join one of the eleven Strategic Reference Groups came together on Wednesday evening to meet each other and to start work. Each group will be chaired by former councillors and assisted by senior Council staff. The General Manager and I welcomed them and thanked them for volunteering to help develop a plan that will be important in shaping the direction of the new Council. There was a buzz of enthusiasm that was quite infectious. I had a chance to talk with many as I moved around through the evening, particularly focussing on those I had not met before. They were all very impressive and readers can be confident about the success of this first large scale community engagement. Dick Persson AM [email protected]
