Rongo means peace. In Maori mythology, Rongo is the god of cultivated food, especially the kumara, a vital food crop. Other crops cultivated by Maori in traditional times include taro, yums (uwhi), cordyline (ti) and gourds (hue). Because of their tropical origin, most of these crops were difficult to grow except in the far north. This design is a depiction of freshly tilled earth, ready for planting.

New Zealand’s National Symbol – The Silver Fern The silver fern is becoming increasingly recognized overseas as the national symbol of New Zealand.

It was originally adopted by the New Zealand Native Rugby Team which visited England in 1888 and has since formed part of the uniform (or badge) of successive representative sporting teams. From the early 1900s, the fern leaf has been used as a trademark for meat and dairy exports.

RECTANGLE SILVER FERN PLATE On 18 May 1908, to mark the attainment of Dominion status, the Secretary of State for Colonies approved the New Zealand Government's proposal to substitute a wreath of fern leaves for the laurel wreath on the Governor's Ensign. This usage, also, continued until about 1935. The fern leaf has been used as a distinguishing badge for New Zealand military formations, particularly during the Second World War, and was also used to mark the graves of New Zealand servicemen in overseas countries. In the most recent revision (1963) of the New Zealand Coat of Arms, two fern leaves provide a base for the supporters to stand upon.

These artistically hand-crafted bowls capture the beauty of our internationally known beautiful Paua shells.

PAUA is a shellfish indigenous to the South Pacific waters surrounding New Zealand. As a unique type of abalone, paua has become a “taonga” (treasure) to the New Zealand people and the shells are often used for decorative effect. The shell has an iridescent blue-green interior and is widely used for jewelry and ornaments. It is found in rock crevices at extreme low tide.

The Maori people have had a long tradition of gathering paua for its nutritional and aesthetic qualities.
