Character of Kat

Katczinsky got angry. You might be

generous for once. You havent drawn

food for eighty men. Youve drawn it for

the entire Second Company. Good. Letshave it then. We are the Second

Company.

Kats Life Before the War

Katczinsky is the smartest I know. By

trade he is a cobbler, I believe, but that

hasnt anything to do with it; he

understands all trades.

Kat had a life previous to war, and

therefore has more to loose then hisfellow comrades.

Kat is a Fatherly Figure

Only the young recruits are agitated. Kat

explains to them: That was a twelve-inch.

You can tell by the report; now youll hear

the burst.

Kat looks out for the new recruits even

though he doesnt have to, therefore he

acts as a fatherly figure towards others.

Kats Instincts

Kat listens: Therell be a bombardment

to-night.

"That is Kat. If for one hour in a year

something eatable were to be had in some

one place only, within that hour, as if

moved by a vision, he would put on his

cap, go out and walk directly there, asthough following a compass, and find it."

Kat is Resourceful:

Then he hauls out a frying pan from

under his coat, and a handful of salt as

well as a lump of fat from his pocket.

Kat has a knack for finding things

whenever his people are in need of

something. If seems as if he can do justabout anything.

Kat Provides for His Men

Kat gives no explanation. He has the

bread, the rest doesnt matter. Im sure

that if he were planted down in the

middle of the desert, in half an hour hewould have gathered together a supper of

roast meat, dates, and wine.

He finds everything- if it is cold, a smallstove and wood, hay and straw, a table

and chairs- but above all food. It is

uncanny; one would think he conjured it

out of the air.

Kat Values the Lives of His Men

Kat shakes his head. Such a kid- He

repeats it. Young innocents-

Kat has proven that he takes care of his

men, even though they are not his to

protect.

Kat in the Eyes of Paul

"That is Kat. If for one hour in a year

Here, it is noted that Paul has great faith

in Kat and his abilities to provide for

them.

Kat Slowly Changes

After the battle in the graveyard, Kat

becomes disconnected to the world

around him. His talk amongst his friends

lessens. And soon
